Studio Visit: Amanda Assad Mounser's Glam Workshop
Featuring bronzed metal, lava rock, turquoise and crystals, any one of Amanda Assad Mounser's creations are sculptural tour de force. The New York-based jewelry designer's work has been highlighted in a slew of international magazines including Italian Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, the New York times, Paper Magazine, W Magazine and many more.
Amanda not only revealed her dream clientele (she's already adorned Lady Gaga) but has also shared with us some intimate shots from her studio.
StyleList: As an alum of both Moschino and Alejandro Ingelmo, how have those brands influenced your eponymous label?
Amanda Assad: I think that working for such innovative brands enabled me to expand my creative perspective. Being immersed in the kind of design aesthetic that holds no bounds really pushed me to dive head first into materializing my creative vision no matter how "out there" that vision might be. Moschino has such a fresh and whimsical approach to fashion, and their use of color without abandon is definitely a formula I subscribe to. And I love how Alejandro has such a progressively modern eye for design while maintaining a strong level of craftsmanship.
StyleList: What is the inspiration behind your latest collection "Neo Conquistador"?
AA: My overall aesthetic is inspired by the glitter gods of the Glam Rock Movement -- David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Mic Jagger, as well as their muses and female counterparts -- Bianca Jagger, Angela Bowie, Jerry Hall and Anita Pallenberg. The "Neo Conqustador" is a modern interpretation of the outrageous '70s rock and roll warrior. While designing this collection, I imagined how a glam rock music video would unfold and what the powerfully commanding super star would be outfitted in. The result is a mix of organic materials clashed with high shine metals. Textured stones in rich hues of velvety violet, ocean blue, and acid green merge with the geometric silhouettes of silver and gunmetal spike, claw and disc pendants. The look is otherworldly resembling prize metals won in battle or discovered intergalactic treasure from the great beyond.
StyleList: Tell us the story behind the Primitive Mega Necklace -- what materials did you use to build that?
AA: The Primitive Mega Necklace was actually a piece designed for the Lady Gaga Mac Viva Glam promo video. (You can see she is kissing the skull in the video here.) The collar is made up of layers of hand sewn beads - pewter pearls, hematite balls, Swarovski faceted crystals, deep black lava rock and chunks of pyrite, and the pendant is a coyote skull with crystal eyes.
StyleList: If you could sum up your jewelry label in one word, what would you say?
AA: Glam.
StyleList: You collaborated with Cushnie et Ochs for their Spring 2011 show, who would you love to work with next?
AA: A dream list would be Rodarte, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Meadham Kirchhoff
StyleList: As an NYC-native, where do you go to eat, shop and play in the big apple?
AA: For Shopping: Sucre in the West Village for has the best to offer in the realm of edgy jewelry with lots of pieces I haven't seen anywhere else. Thomas Sires in Nolita has a really cool private label minimalistic RTW line, chic eclectic trinkets from around the world and sick statement jewelry. Local Clothing in the East Village is my go to for well edited vintage. It is an especially good resource for amazing boots. If I am going to splurge, I'll go to the Isabel Marant Boutique, or Comme des Garcons. And of course I can always find something at Opening Ceremony. Maryam Nassir Zadeh on the Lower East Side is also an amazing spot for gorgeously inventive jewelry and accessories - each piece in her assortment is like a work of art.
For Food: Williamsburg has the BEST restaurants, below are my faves: Diner and The Roebling Tea Room both have an amazing pork chop. Saltys is my go to lunch spot - the Clean Slate is the sandwich to die for. Egg and Pies-n-Thighs are perfect for when you are hungover or when you just want to be bad.
For Drink: The Standard Hotel has the most amazing view, I love the vibe at the Jane Hotel and Hotel Griffou, and Lit Lounge is my favorite dive, I've been going there since I moved here 6 years ago.
StyleList: Who would be your dream client?
AA: Gwen Stefani, Anna Dello Russo, and Mary-Kate Olsen because each embrace risk taking style, while making each look distinctly their own no matter what the trend.
