Ikram Goldman's eponymous Chicago boutique just celebrated 10 years as one of the city's premier style destinations. And the shop has plenty of high profile fans: Gwyneth Paltrow named the store one of her favorite Chicago spots in Goop, the anniversary bash counted guests like Prabal Gurung and Rodarte's Laura and Kate Mulleavy, and Goldman herself has been known to advise first lady Michelle Obama on sartorial matters. The shop already houses a wide range of labels, from classics like Chanel to newcomers like Suno, and will have even more room for its stellar selection when it moves from its current Rush Street digs to a 16,000-square-foot space on East Huron Street at the end of July. We asked Goldman to tell us about some of her favorite pieces this season.
What are your top sellers for spring/summer?
My Prova dresses are my biggest hit. They retail $495-695. They're in fabulous prints with incredible fringe-beading detail in bright neon colors all around the edges. To die for. My other favorite is the tote from Céline. They come in every color and every fabric -- there's a snake leather, a bright blue, a beautiful green, a simple embossed leather in black or brown The best shoe on the planet is the Tabitha Simmons round-toe, with snakeskin sides and glitter in the front of the toe and the heel. It's the most neutral shoe. It goes with everything from a day suit to a black-tie gown.
What about jewelry?
Ruby Kobo's incredible necklaces and bracelets. They're from the CFDA Incubator. They are phenomenal --they do these pendants that they sell in threes. So it's like the hand of God, a very interesting hand of God, not your typical five-finger hand. It's more like a mini fist with a diamond on the inside in the shape of an eye. My other favorite is Ted Muehling, of course, which I beyond love.
What other designers are you excited about right now?
People I'm very excited about this season are Nina Ricci and Rochas. I'm also very excited about Narciso and Thakoon. Narciso this season was very beautiful and Thakoon was really youthful and fun and I loved it.
Who's your local style icon?
Mellody Hobson [president of Ariel Investments] has the best taste in Chicago.
What fashion trends are big in Chicago?
Everyone is obsessed with Imp of the Perverse jackets. They're done by this fabulous guy out of L.A. They're these really cool blazers, all one of a kind, taken from old jackets and intricately reworked as streetwear that's fringed with beautiful silk linings painted on the inside and skull and snake button details. It is the hippest collection, and it goes with everything.
