People have been designing animals in to jewelry almost since the concept of jewelry began. Today dozens of designers are able to cast furry friends in gold and diamonds. Though on the high-end watch scene, only a few brands have mastered the art. One of them is
Boucheron, and again for 2011, their high-jewelry timepiece collection masterfully mixes animals with whimsy. Not all of their pieces have animals, but here is a glimpse of their newest collection.
The pictured watch is sans creature - but is in honor of the famous 1001 Arabian Night tales and is called the Boucheron Crazy Sheherazade. Like the rest of the collection, it is in a 40mm wide case done in 18k rose or white gold, and features a beautifully hand-decorated dial and case set with diamonds, lapis lazuli, sapphires, amethysts and other stones. The circular dial toward the bottom spins and acts as the seconds hand.
Inside each of these watches is a Swiss Girard-Perregaux automatic movement. Boucheron considers them unisex, but I take issue to that. Can the new Crazy Jungle Hathi with an elephant on the dial and purple satin strap work on my male wrist? Maybe with a black strap... The art and jewelry work on the pieces is incredibly impressive. Note how the head of the flamingo in the Crazy Jungle Flamingo watch actually looks to be underwater with small accompanying fishes.
Boucheron does an incredible job at creating imagery with precious materials. The other piece in the gallery below is the Crazy Jungle Seahorse (yes I know, the name makes no sense). Many of these pieces come in two variants: with or without the additional decoration on the bezel. Exclusive, luxurious and imminently artful (not to mention expensive), this is a glimpse at the watches Boucheron Audacious collection has to offer for 2011.
