Giuliana Rancic on Red Carpet Disasters, Her Ombre Highlights and Her Husband's Hollywood Makeover

As part of E!'s "Fashion Police" squad, Giuliana Rancic has a certain reputation to uphold.

Which explains why the E! news anchor had to convene a hasty style intervention when husband Bill finally decided to make a permanent move from his dearly beloved Chicago to his other half's Los Angeles base.

Viewers will see the results of the fashion overhaul and the couple's one-city living arrangement on the new season of their domestically-themed Style Network reality show "Giuliana & Bill."

Rancic checked in with StyleList to chat about the show's fourth season, which premieres July 18. Of course, she also shared some of her red carpet critiques.

StyleList: So, how did you tweak Bill's wardrobe for Hollywood?
Giuliana Rancic:
First, I got him some aviators. Then, I had to tell him the spiky hair he favors was so four years ago. I got him to do a comb over like Cary Grant and wear some cool cargo pants, nice T-shirts and some Converse sneakers.

StyleList: How did he take it?
GR:
Poor Bill. He's always reluctant, but I think he'll say it's an improvement. He just looks more modern and hip.

StyleList: Was there an outfit in his closet you should have reported to the "Fashion Police"?
GR:
Oh, I don't let him leave the house in anything bad. But one time we were on our way to an interview and he came out wearing a black belt with brown shoes. I almost jumped out the window from embarrassment. That, to me, is fashion suicide. The shoes and the belt have to match. I see that on the red carpet and I'm all over it. So we got him some more belts!

StyleList: Do you have a stylist for "Giuliana & Bill" or are we witnessing your personal fashion reality?
GR:
There's a bit of a blur. Some days when we're filming I come home from work at E! and don't change so 40 percent of what you see is stylist by default.

This new season starts with me looking for a new stylist. Jose, my stylist who has been with me for years, has gotten really busy with other projects so I try out a couple of new people. That search is an ongoing process. We've posted some of pictures of looks they've chosen for me on line to see what viewers like better. It's a big decision. We're still in the process of choosing.

StyleList: For someone in your position, what's a deal breaker with a stylist?
GR:
If someone thinks dressing me involves just popping on a cute little Shoshanna dress and calling it a day. That cute dress is part of it, but I need things to be a little more interesting than that dress alone. Accessories are key. I don't want just a great pair of black Brian Atwood pumps with that cute dress. It's a great look, but too predictable for me. The look has got to be interesting from head-to-toe.

StyleList: Speaking of your look, your ombré hair color has become a signature.
GR:
(Laughs) You know, it went from being fashionable to complete and utter laziness. I hate going to get my highlights done. It saves me time and money to wear it this way. I only go to the salon half the time I used to. But now I'm like crap, this is going to go out of style and I love it. So for fall, I may have to change it up. I'll probably go dark, like my roots, which people are used to seeing anyway!

StyleList: Let's talk "Fashion Police." Who's the last person who made you cringe on the red carpet?
GR:
Emma Watson on the "Harry Potter" red carpet here in the states was way,way too much. The makeup alone was too heavy. The (Bottega Venata) dress was too heavy. Here you have this beautiful girl with an adorable pixie who is so young and fresh and someone goes and tries to cover up all that natural beauty.

StyleList: Which celebrity are you loving on the red carpet?
GR:
Jennifer Lopez is looking great. I was tuning into "American Idol" this year just to see what she was wearing. Here's a woman who is 40-years-old, she's got twins and she can rock blue eye shadow without looking desperate. Wherever she shows up for an event, she's hitting it out of the fashion park.

StyleList: And in the worst dressed department....?
GR:
Courtney Love. Sadly, there isn't a week she doesn't seem to end up on our worst dressed list. Remember when she had that style transformation years back and she was looking really amazing? That needs to happen for her again. And the thing is with Courtney, she's shown she's has an eye for good pieces. She just needs some help on putting it together again.

StyleList: You've explored some deeply personal and relatable issues in your marriage on "Giuliana & Bill." Where do you take the viewers this season?
GR:
Last season we were really open about our struggle with infertility. This season is about what Bill dubbed the "year of fun." We focused on doing things we might not have had the opportunity to do if we had that baby. I took my first two week vacation since 2001 and we went to Italy. What a difference two weeks makes instead of one. I immersed myself in my family and culture. We just had the best time ever.

Meanwhile, Rancic once went foundation-free on the red carpet, and her skin looked great! Would you ever dare to bare?

'American Idol' Fashion Recap: Lauren Alaina's Country Rock Dresses, Boots, Jewelery and More!

Costume designer Soyon An. Courtesy Photo

Lauren Alaina went a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll for the "American Idol" finale.

The 16-year-old Georgia peach was styled by the show's ladies' costume designer, Soyon An, to reflect the country crooner's broad crossover appeal. "I used fashion as a tool to show her diversity," An tells StyleList exclusively.

For three powerful performances the diva-in-training --who was battling strained vocal cords-- went from edgy black to an ethereal topaz minidress that had the Grand Ole Opry bedazzled all over its layers.

Here, An gives us the behind-the-seams dish on the night's style high notes:

To sing Carrie Underwood's "Flat on the Floor," Alaina took to the stage at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater in black and metallics that An chose to make her look "strong and fierce." "She [was] wearing a dress [sourced] from Kitson that has all the sparkle a girl needs, tights to make it young and a silver skin leather jacket to bring the rock and some sparkly jewelry to make it fun and not so serious."

Fashion Credits: Shoes Badgley Mischka, jewelery Bijou Tresor.

Tonight either Alaina or fellow country teen Scotty McCreery, 17, will win the "American Idol" title and An says fashion-wise, her young charge is ready for the part. "She has come so far from when we met. She is gaining self-confidence in her body and is learning what works for her body type and how to make her shape work for her. She's learned to balance between not enough and too much. She's learned about color and which ones work for her and how to accessorize. I think she's ready for stardom and ready to show the world what she's capable of."

Fashion Credits: Dress For Joseph, leggings David Lerner, shoes Old Gringo, jacket Alexis, jewelry Kitson and Bijou Tresor.

For Alaina's second song, "Idol" winner Carrie Underwood, chose the Pam Tillis ballad "Maybe it was Memphis" and the teen looked the country part in a sparkly, topaz hoedown dress that An chose to coronate the cowboy princess. "It was Memphis! I wanted her to be just that," An says, telling us the look was her favorite of the night. "It was super slimming and flattering for her shape and very Lauren."

Fashion Credits: Dress sourced from The Mint Collection in Los Angeles, boots 1883, ring and earrings Bijou Tresor and guitar necklace, the Dolly Parton collection.

For her third and most emotional performance, Alaina sang a new song, "Like My Mother Does" while serenading her mother without missing a beat. She wore a white, floor-length gown by Adrianna Pappel trimmed with a spray of garden flowers at the hemline that kept it young and fresh. "The song chose that dress. It was perfect, age appropriate and just enough for the finale and the butterfly chandelier earring and floral bracelet created a beautiful story," An says.

'Dancing with the Stars' Costume Recap: Hines Ward's Marching Band Uniform, Chelsea Kane's Electric Shoes, Kirstie Alley's Unitard

With the tacky but coveted mirror ball trophy on the line, the three couples in the "Dancing with the Stars" finale needed to sparkle just as bright.

Kirstie Alley flaunted her toned curves in a body-hugging unitard, Hines Ward transformed from football's Silent Assassin to a bedazzled drum major and Chelsea Kane was literally live-wired for the season 12 finale.

The show's Emmy-winning costume designer, Randall Christensen, executed the celebrities' most personal visions for their make-it or break-it dances.

Here, Christensen takes us behind-the-seams to dish on the finale looks:

    Photos: Adam Taylor, ABC

Hines Ward and Kym Johnson: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were the inspiration for the couples' quickstep look, which included a classic top hat, tuxedo and tails for the Pittsburgh Steelers pro. Johnson's sublime gown featured white sheer mesh encrusted with 12,000 crystals and hand-dyed-and-cut guipure lace appliqué work. For a contemporary twist, its sheer skirt was fringed with horsehair braid.

For their freestyle performance, Ward lived out his marching band fantasy in custom-made drum major regalia. Christensen's team used velcro and gussets at the armpits to give Ward tear-away sleeves to crank up his dance moves. Meanwhile, custom costumes for the musicians that joined the couple on stage were ordered from Texas in Steelers' black and gold and arrived "in the nick of time." Johnson's majorette "boots" were actually spandex spats slipped over her Latin dance shoes for ease of movement. Her gold fringe minidress was a sexy take on the majorette/cheerleader look.

    Photos: Adam Taylor, ABC

Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas: Since she first slipped on Christensen's fringe party in the U.S.A. pants during Patriot's Week, the actress has been a fan and requested the style for her samba. For more fun, Christensen added fringe under a row of thousands of hand-beaded crystals on top. "It was tons of work, but hey it's the finale," he says. "And I have to admit it. No one wears fringe pants better than Chelsea."

For their "Tron"-themed freestyle, the couple deviated from classic ballroom style and requested costumes that didn't exactly match. Kane wore a turquoise bra-top and Ballas a lime-bedazzled suit. "That surprised be a bit since Mark's suit was such a bright color, but I obliged them because I want to empower each couple and they should have what they want for this very important routine." The battery operated shoes and gloves were installed by singer Chris Brown's lighting team and "it was a wiring nightmare with all the lifts and choreography." While the drama was spectacular the special effects were a fashion challenge: Kane said after the broadcast that one of the battery packs slipped off after her first big move and was dangling during her performance.

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: The actress wore a minidress featuring Carnivale hues of bright orange, yellow and lime green accented with crystal infused fringe for her sexy, sassy samba.

For her freestyle to Pink's "Perfect," Christensen deliberately outfitted Alley in a monk-brown dress, which was torn off to reveal a formfitting black unitard that showed off the slimmed-down figure of the actress who has lost 60-plus pounds in the ballroom. The designer's fashion message? "Hello world, here is the new Kirstie, hot and fabulous."

"Kirstie has been transforming right before our eyes and what an eye-popping end to such a glorious journey. And that was all Kirstie with just a bodysuit and her magnificently toned body."

'American Idol' Fashion Recap: Haley Reinhart Channels Stevie Nicks, Lauren Alaina's Shimmery Blue Grand Ole Opry Gown

With just a week to go before the "American Idol" finals, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart dressed the diva part of singing superstars while staying true to their musical roots.

Alaina caught the judges' eye with a shimmery blue strapless gown that had Steven Tyler remarking she looked "like she belonged at the Grand Ole Opry."

Reinhart was blown by a wind machine in a flowing, boho ode to Stevie Nicks.

"Idol's" ladies costume designer, Soyon An, took StyleList behind-the-seams to discuss the fashion high notes of the semi-final marathon.

Lauren Alaina: The 16-year-old got a chance to break in a pair of white, bedazzled Neon Dirt cowboy boots she had been begging to wear on stage to sing Faith Hill's "Wild One." "We went for the cowgirl princess look. It felt like it was fun, young and kind of flirty like a country, wild dessert flower," says An. Her coral color-block top was from BeBe, her jeans and belt were by Guess and SoHo Hearts created her blossom earrings.

Alaina wore a sweet but formal Betsey Johnson two-tone dress, with a black sequined top and flouncy skirt, for her second performance of The Band Perry's "If I Die Young." An added Michael Kors heels, Bebe earrings, a layered Guess necklace and rings by Flirt and Danielle Stevens to finish the look. "I wanted to incorporate the literal verses of the song, which mentions pearls and roses, so I did that with the jewelry," An says.

Alaina also provided some live fashion drama when she shared that she ripped her pantyhose right before stage time and a makeup artist worked shimmering bronzer into her legs. "Normally, I've got two or three pairs of hose waiting for an emergency, but she was in a hurry. I just screamed for makeup to hurry with some bronzing cream," says An. "It worked!"

Alaina's third dress, chosen for her performance of Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance," was sourced from The Mint Collection in Los Angeles. Her accessories included a Guy and Eva bracelet and BeBe earrrings. The floor-length strapless gown featured silver thread woven throughout the baby blue fabric. "When Steven Tyler said that dress made her look like she belonged at the Grand Ole Opry, I knew we got it right and it gave her her moment."

    American Idol Haley Reinhart

Haley Reinhart: The bluesy girl from Chicago rocked out to Led Zeppelin-- accompanied by her dad on guitar-- in a short, fringed leather halter dress by Catherine Malandrino which An sourced from L.A'.s Kitson boutique. " She wanted to be very rock 'n' roll for this, but I also wanted to keep her look consistent, showing off her legs and her arms, which we've done all season."

Reinhart tumbled on the stage in her towering Report Signature heels, surprising An who says she maneuvered easily in the shoes during dress rehearsal. "I freaked out when it happened, but think she just got caught up in the moment. She put so much energy into that amazing performance," says An.

For her second performance of Stevie Nick's "Rhiannon" Reinhart's flowing Tony Cohen dress was blown by a wind machine for a mystical effect reminiscent of the Fleetwood Mac singer's stage presence. "I actually didn't know about the wind machine, or that Haley was going to be singing that song when we saw that dress weeks ago, but at the time, we were thinking it was modern Stevie Nicks. The whole thing was karma." Reinhart's stunning Live! On Sunset sterling earrings featured crystals and teal gemstones, a choice An made for drama and "a pop of color against her skin."

Reinhart's third look, for a husky-voiced interpretation of Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know", was a testament to the power of budget dressing. A royal blue Bebe camisole topped skintight black Old Navy jeans and dramatic Live! On Sunset shoulder-skimming earrings. "I love that they are jeans her fans can afford," says An. "The look is simple, but that goes a long way for Haley."

'Dancing with the Stars' Costume Recap: Kirstie Alley's Crystal Bustier, Karina Smirnoff's Catsuit, Ralph Macchio's Padded Pants, Kym Johnson's White Hot Tango Dress

For the fiercely contested "Dancing with the Stars" semi-finals, its Emmy-winning costume designer Randall Christensen had his own workroom competition: Create 12 distinct looks for four couples in five days.

His team's challenge included creating a bedazzled neck brace for injured professional Kym Johnson while transforming Karina Smirnoff into a cat woman and giving shrinking actress Kirstie Alley her sexiest costume yet.

With each couple dancing three dances the design process was "an enormous challenge," says Christensen. "Our saving grace was that we had to deal with only four couples instead of the full cast and we know their personalities and body types."

Here, Christensen takes us behind-the-seams to dish on some of the night's best looks:

    Photos: Adam Taylor, ABC

Kym Johnson and Hines Ward: Up until moments before they took the dance-floor for an emotional Argentine tango that received a perfect score, Christensen's team was working on a silver-crystal encrusted neck brace for an injured Johnson. She was rushed to the hospital May 13 when football pro Ward's full body weight came down on her neck as the couple attempted a difficult flip.

Johnson ultimately made the call that she felt strong enough to dance without the brace. Her formfitting tango dress with its cutout back and angled hemline was the most labor intensive costume of the night featuring mesh encrusted with "thousands upon thousands of pearls." "Then we added the sparkle of 10,000 crystals wedged between the pearls," says Christensen. "To make that costume in five days was a huge undertaking."

Karina Smirnoff and Ralph Macchio: For their pimp-daddy inspired salsa, Christensen created a skintight bodysuit of leopard for Smirnoff, splitting it down the middle to reveal a red crystal-encrusted bra. "Who else could pull off such a sizzling catsuit but Karina Smirnoff," says Christensen.

Padding obtained from Christensen's "secret downtown [Los Angeles] source" was slipped into Macchio's pants to give him a more prominent backside, an idea the actor and his partner came up with "for fun." The catsuit was accented with thousands of hand-strung crystal strands and piles of hematite and topaz crystals.

    Photos: Adam Taylor, ABC

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Christensen says Alley's transformation (she says she's lost more than 70 pounds dancing) "blows me away each and every week." And this week, he showed off her toned upper body in a sleeveless, strapless frock. Her dark paso doble look featured a crystal-encrusted bustier with a tattered black and purple organza neckline. "The draped front was not traditional, but kept with the theme of the dance, which is Spanish gypsy," he explains. Black leggings were added in keeping with the edgy mood.

Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas: The Disney star rose to the top of the leader board again, thanks to her sizzling rumba which she performed in a deep mauve and lavender, midriff-baring frock that had its own dramatic backstory. The costume was originally cotton-candy pink, but the dancers asked for a new, darker look after show producers informed them clearance issues had forced a last-minute music change. "Being the pros that they are and knowing the kind of week the workroom was having, they were cool with my idea of dyeing her original look. We just dipped the whole thing and said a few prayers."
