Power Foods: Revive Your Skin for Spring

Having great looking skin doesn't necessarily entail a trip to the most expensive beauty counter at the department store. Instead, it can start with a trip to your kitchen.

You really are what you eat, and your skin reflects this. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can make your skin glow, help clear up acne and fight aging and sun damage. Likewise, meals laden with trans-fats, white flour, sugar and chemicals can leave your complexion looking dry, dull and lackluster.

Try throwing a few dark greens into a smoothie (you won't even taste them, promise). Opt for a piece of salmon instead of a burger next time you go out. And ditch the fat-filled desserts and replace with a bowl of seasonal berries. Not only will you look better, you will feel better too!

Dr. Brandith Irwin, a nationally known skin expert and board certified dermatologist says the appearance of people's complexions reveals a lot about their general health. "Aside from when someone has sun damage, which makes it harder to see the underlying health of the skin, I can look at someone and tell if their nutrition is optimal or not."

So go ahead, feed your face! Click through the gallery above for 10 of the best foods to include regularly in your diet for the most beautiful skin.

Just like there are certain foods to include in your diet, there are plenty of ones to avoid if you want a healthy looking complexion. Among Irwin's worst foods for your skin are white sugar, white flour, anything with trans-fats, processed foods, sugary drinks, deep-fried foods, baked goods, pizza and simple carbs. All of these can contribute to inflammation. They also contain insulin and lepton, which are major accelerators of the aging process.

"If people eliminate most of the white flours and white sugars from their diets, they're going to eat the healthier foods and higher quality products and then their skin will start to reflect that too," said Irwin.

Food can also be a remedy for common skin problems. For instance, if you have dry skin or psoriasis, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like wild Alaskan salmon can help. If you are prone to acne, avoid inflammatory type foods like white flours, sugars and deep-fried foods. Also, omega-3-rich foods can reduce redness and inflammation.

"Our skin is the largest organ we have," added Irwin. "The healthier we are internally, the healthier our skin will be."

Fergie Works It Out in a Braided Ponytail

Fergie Fishtail Braid Ponytail

Posing more like she was on the red carpet than at a charity race, Fergie was glammed up yesterday at the Youth Run for Japan in Santa Monica, California.

The Black Eyed Peas songstress had her lengthy locks pulled back into a dramatic fishtail braid for the two-mile run to raise money for the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake Fund -- an event that her husband, Josh Duhamel, organized.

The tight ponytail was a perfect complement to her equally tight black warm-up suit. Add to that her dark sunglasses and signature black fingernails, and the 36-year-old (who just celebrated her birthday the day before) looked like a total rock star as she hit the streets to run with 4,000 other participants.

While we're used to seeing Fergie with her honey-highlighted blond strands worn long and wavy, we think she looks equally as sexy -- and sporty -- with them pulled back into a braided ponytail.

Either way, we "Gotta Feeling" that all eyes were on her at this race!

Want to create your own beautiful braid? Take a look at the video below for tips.

4. Keep the dryer one inch from the hair to avoid burning it.

No longer just your "Teenage Dream," Katy Perry is now your alien dream.

In the upcoming video for her latest single, "E.T.", Perry says she's "ready for abduction" and judging by her out-of-this-world makeup, she certainly is!

The 26-year-old pop sensation posted photos to her Facebook page this week encouraging others to join the global abduction and recreate their own "E.T." music video look which includes an array of seriously bright, bold colors.

The futuristic look starts with a white base and a blue frame around her face. For Perry's alien-esque eyes, she combines various shades of fuchsia, blue and white along with bright turquoise contacts and long pink lashes. The same blues and pinks are then used in dramatic designs on her cheeks and forehead for a sexy, ethereal glow.

In the recently-released pictures below, Perry rocks a golden gladiator look complete with bold bronze braids and geometric eye makeup and lipstick, as well as, sky-high red cornrows and jeweled face paint.
