Hair Accessories: The Right and Wrong Way to Wear Them

Stylish flowers, fabrics and headbands adorned the runways this spring. We saw buns wrapped in patent leather, headbands worn across beehives and hats galore. With fashion going in a more polished and glamorous direction, it's only right to accessorize your head with a bit of color or bling this season.

But before you start clipping in the feathers and tying on the scarves, make sure you know the right -- and wrong -- ways to accessorize. An inch here or there can make a difference between oh-so chic and oh no!

"Accessories should help you shape your hair into a refined style," advises hair accessory designer Colette Malouf. "If the accessory does not work with the cut and texture of the hair, then it looks like functional ornamentation versus a fashion statement."

Women also need to know their face shape and experiment with different lengths and textures when considering an accessory, advised Malouf. For instance, people with a heart-shaped face look amazing in headbands. With a square or broad shape, it is best to have layers surround the face and put hair up with an accessory on the side. Oval or long faces should wear something on the side and add volume to the texture of their hair.

Flowers: "They look best worn lower than the eye in the front of the face or lower than the ear in the back of the head on a bun," said Malouf. "At Marc Jacobs, the hair was close to the head on top and then splayed out in a beautiful frizz embracing large bunches of flowers low on the side of the face. Flowers worn too high on the head look old-fashioned and lose their artistic appeal." Worse yet are ones worn on the middle of the forehead!

Fabric: Braiding strands of silk or ribbon is really cute on long hair, according to Malouf. You can then loop the hair and pin it back. A straight braid with fabric running through it is too predictable and boring, so get more creative.

Scarves: Scarves can be worn as a headband for a cool bohemian look. But don't even think about tying one around your head with a big bow in middle of the forehead!

Barrettes: Simple rectangular barrettes can look clunky and be uncomfortable. "They make a statement en masse on the runway, but are contrived in real life unless they are small and jeweled," said Malouf. If you are going to wear a barrette, make sure it sculpts the hair in a flattering shape around the face and then is secured. Don't just use it to pull the hair straight back from the part.

Antique Clips: A vintage-looking clip should be worn when your hair has loose waves to keep it feminine. "Hair accessories that emphasize a certain femininity are a big trend right now," said Gilda Pastena, celebrity hairstylist at Pierre Michel Salon in New York. These clips also look great with a chignon. Just don't wear them too tight or in the front of your head.

Headbands: With headbands, the key is to make sure your hair retains enough volume. "Don't pull all of your hair back in a headband unless you have a bob or really short hair," said Malouf who advised that on longer hair, headbands look fresh worn with the tips tilted back so they sit on the head more like a pair of sunglasses and can have a crown effect if jeweled or beaded. Make sure to leave about half an inch of hair surrounding the face, or if you wear the band far back on the head, back-brush the hair on the crown to puff it up and then pull it into a ponytail.

Feathers: Believe it or not, feathers can be a chic accessory -- in moderation. They are best worn on either side of your head when your hair is down or up. Just don't wear them in the back of a ponytail as this can just look messy and birdlike!

The biggest thing to keep in mind when accessorizing your 'do? Keep it simple. "Don't overcomplicate things," adds Pastena. "An accessory complements and completes the style, it shouldn't be the centerpiece of your look."

Age and Beauty: Meet the Fashionable Seniors Behind 'Advanced Style' [VIDEO]

Advanced Style: Age and Beauty on Nowness.com.

If you think age doesn't equate to beauty and style, you haven't met New York's most fashionable older women behind photographer Ari Seth Cohen's Advanced Style blog.

Today, his iconic style mavens are featured in a short -- and oh so fun -- film on NOWNESS.com created by filmmaker Lina Plioplyte. Trust us, this could be the best two minutes of your day.

Termed "anti-fashion fashion" by one of the ladies wearing an Andy Warhol-style bracelet, these senior fashionistas are making a grand statement.

"Hearing them speak about clothing is so fascinating," Cohen said on the site. "There is history and memories in what they are wearing and I think it's important to show that storytelling aspect, as well as their vitality and creativity."

You've got textile guru Iris Apfel with her signature owl glasses, artist Ilona Royce Smithkin in bright orange eyelashes and other women adorning leopard sunglasses, bright feather scarves, men's jackets and bold chunky earrings.

"I don't want to go around like a dreary old lady," one woman said.

As great as these women are, Cohen said he'd also like to add Yoko Ono, Richard Avedon's 60s muse China Machado and Jane Schmitt, who was featured recently in the Lanvin X H&M campaign. We can think of one other style queen who should have been a part of this iconic group: Elizabeth Taylor.

It's timeless fashion, bold color and the permission to be creative that get these women noticed on the streets of the Big Apple.

"Walking around New York taking photographs, I noticed how many young girls are appropriating style from older women: leopard print, fur, turbans and hats," said Cohen. "In general, the older women wear these things naturally, with more confidence."

Confident, indeed.

"I don't dress for anybody else. I dress for myself," added one woman. "If somebody doesn't like what I'm wearing, I don't give a shit."

Meanwhile, check out another one of Cohen's older and bolder models!

We all know the power of looking our best. It puts a spring in our step and a boost in our confidence -- particularly when going through the nerve-wracking process of interviewing for a job.

Makeup artist and cosmetics creator Bobbi Brown knows this better than anyone. She has spent her career helping women put their best face forward, and she is continuing that work by supporting disadvantaged women reentering the work force.

This spring, Brown has created a new makeup collection to benefit Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that provides low-income women with professional attire and career development tools to thrive in work and life.

For over 10 years, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics has donated over $1 million in makeup and monetary funds to this organization, while also hiring some of the women who have completed the Dress for Success program and providing monthly makeup lessons to others, teaching them how to create work-appropriate looks.

Ms. "Pretty Powerful" herself is committed to helping more women look their best with her new Dress for Success Makeup Collection.

The collection features a five shadow eye palette, lip color, two shades of lip gloss and Extreme Party Mascara. It will be available for $60 exclusively at Macy's counters in March 2011, and all proceeds will be donated to Dress for Success Worldwide.

"Dress for Success is an amazing organization because it gives women the tools and knowledge they need to look like and eventually become the person they hope to be," Brown stated in a press release.

3 Simple and Sexy Vacation Hairstyles

If you're hitting the road and heading towards sunnier skies for a much-need vacation, the last thing you want to worry about -- while sipping fruity cocktails -- is high-maintenance hair, right?

So we took inspiration from the Miami Beach International Fashion Week 2011 and compiled the chicest and simplest vacation hairstyles -- perfect for a day at the beach in your sexy two-piece or a glammed-up night on the town.

"We're seeing a movement toward smoother, shinier hair, regardless of the styles worn," said Antonio Corral-Calero, the mastermind behind all the runway looks and Moroccanoil Artistic Director. And just in time for summer, many of those looks were adorned with gorgeous, ocean-like waves. Call it the New Wave, if you will!

The Wavy Chignon
One of the most dramatic hair looks on the runway was a series of innovative chignons inspired by portraits by famed Spanish artist Julio Romero de Torres, as remembered by Corral-Calero during his childhood in Barcelona. The deep side-parted hair was swept over to cover the ear on one side with a subtle wave pattern. It was then pulled back and styled in smooth, rolled layers of hair that formed unique, very modern designs in the shape of a sea shell. Perfect for the beach!

The Long Wave
Beautiful, full-bodied waves also energized the runway. "My inspiration was the freedom of the '70s and the sensuality of '60s French film siren Brigitte Bardot," said Corral-Calero. "I wanted the hair to look very L.A. and Miami, and very sexy."

To make the look even more modern, he separated and styled the ends of the hair so they appeared almost ragged. "I had the glamorous allure of mermaids in mind when we created these looks: very sensual and elegant."

The Wavy Pony
While ponytails will never go out of fashion, the hottest ones on this year's runway were sleek and sophisticated. The sides of the hair were smoothed, tied above the nape of the neck and wrapped with a section of the hair around the base. The top of the head was sprayed with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray, to give the hair a wet appearance. The tail was then given dramatic, soft waves.

All the looks were held together with Moroccanoil products for a soft look with tons of movement. "The Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray gives beautiful natural-looking shine and a healthy texture, which also helped finish the look," added Corra-Calero. "I finished all the looks with a light misting of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray before the girls went out on the runway."
