Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 Fashion Week: Boy-Meets-Girl Beauty

When models took to the runway in Milan for the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2011 fashion show, they were coiffed and primped in beauty looks that ranged from ethereal femininity to sharp masculinity.

Makeup artist Pat McGrath, the mastermind behind the looks, created a clean canvas on every face using Dolce & Gabbana the Foundation for satiny skin that was matte throughout the T-zone, with hints of dewiness added along the cheeks and temples. She then blended the line's Perfect Finish Concealer underneath the eyes to remove any imperfections.

Once the base was finished, it was time for the feminine and masculine looks to part ways.

For the girlish luminosity, half of the show's models were painted with a look that McGrath describes as "ultra-feminine, ultra gorgeous -- very sensual, rosy, pretty, glowing!"

To achieve the luminescence, the makeup artist applied the Blush Luminous Cheek Colour in Warm with a large brush, working in a circular motion along the contour, cheekbone and finishing up along the temple, followed by a light dusting of the Illuminator in Eva.

Eyes were swathed in neutrals from the Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Femme Fatale and then defined with the Eyeliner Crayon Intense in black with a dash of the Eyeliner Crayon Intense in nude along the waterline. To make the eyes truly glisten, McGrath then added the Eyeliner Crayon Intense in Shimmer to the corner of the eye. The Mascara Volumized Lashes offered a luscious finish.

Lips were painted with a warm berry stain that McGrath created by mixing the Classic Cream Lipstick in Glam and Dramatic, simply pressing the blend into the lips with her fingers.

For the masculine look, described by the makeup artist as "beautiful and strong; masculine, but still very pretty," McGrath revisited the Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Femme Fatale for a taupe shadow, but simply curled the lashes for understated definition and made sure the brows were precisely filled in to look strong.

On the cheeks it was all about accentuating bone structure for a more sculpted look, using the Luminous Cheek Color in tan, adding a stroke of the Illuminator in Eva along the brow bone and cheeks.

Lips were kept simple with just a touch of lip balm.

Celebrity Makeup Artists Spill Their Secrets

Patti Dubroff

This year, The Makeup Show, a veritable beauty bonanza, and the Oscars descended upon Los Angeles on the same weekend. While both events reveled in glamour and special effects, the talented folks who actually create red-carpet beauty looks were the celebrities at the former, instead of those who appear on the silver screen.

Since we've always longed for our own personal beauty dream team, like those the A-listers are so fortunate to have, StyleList went in search of the next best thing -- their secret weapons and techniques. Lucky for us, several were happy to oblige:

Pati Dubroff
Star clients: Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Bosworth
Conceal it: "Under-eye concealer should be a very fine layer and it shouldn't be too light because it's going to make the bags stick out more," explains Dubroff. "If there are bags, you put the concealer just under the bag so that it's trying to flatten that area and take away the deep shadow only, but not on the puffy part. Usually the ones that are in the sticks, like YSL Touche Éclat or By Terry's concealer -- those are the best for the eye area. Never use a cream concealer for the eye area because it's just too dense. Those are for the nose and blemishes."
Beauty must-haves: Dubroff's top item is a foundation by a Japanese line that, of course, isn't available in the States, but she offers up her other favorite go-to items: "The under-eye brush from By Terry; Clarins Instant Smooth because it mattifies and fills in any pore and line; a great mascara because that's going to open your eye; Kevyn Aucoin or Clarins cream blush for health and flush; I love Clark's Botanicals for lip balm and I also love Korres Lip Butter."

James Vincent

James Vincent
Star clients:
Paz de la Huerta, Joan Jett
Red-carpet philosophy: "With a celebrity, you need to make them look their best and you need to keep them in their comfort zone as far as keeping them recognizable on the red carpet," explains Vincent. "Joan Jett is actually a great example. Joan Jett's eye is copied in fashion shoots all over the world. I did three fashion shows where they used 'Bad Reputation' as one of the songs. It's just about getting that balance and making it work but making them feel the most beautiful they can be."
Beauty must-haves: "My go-to products that work for celebrities or even women on the go are the Make Up For Ever HD Elixir. It minimizes pores and makes makeup look beautiful. Embryolisse Lait-crème -- I fought to get them into the country. It's really one of those miracle creams, one of those cult products that every makeup artist has in their kit. Stila shadows are very easy for every woman to wear. The smudge pot shadow that they do is great as liner, as mascara in a pinch and it's great for the brow. Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar -- it's your lip and your cheek color. I love it for a woman who doesn't have a lot of time. YSL Touche Éclat -- I probably use it in every application. Also the Skin Enhancer from Kevyn Aucoin and their lash curler."

Kristofer Buckle

Star clients:
Renée Zellweger, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez
Red lip perfected: "I use NARS Jungle Red lip liner," says Buckle. "I love that red. It's a good texture so you get a nice sharp edge. Red is so tricky because it can be messy and it can bleed. I use a product called LipSense and the color I have used on Christina (Aguilera) is called Blu-Red. It's literally like car paint. It's liquid so you apply it with a wand and it goes on like paint and it doesn't have any drag to it, so it creates this perfectly gorgeous doll mouth. It dries completely with no moisture to it and then you apply a topcoat with just moisture. It doesn't move."
Beauty must-haves: "I pretty much put a lash on every single person who sits in the chair for me," he says. "There's not an option. Someone's getting an individual lash or a band lash. There's some sort of lash getting on somebody. As far as a go-to product, something that I put on everyone would be the Three Custom Color concealers. I love Laura Mercier's Translucent Loose Powder, Eight Hour Cream by Elizabeth Arden, and before I even start painting, I use Decleor moisturizer."

Billy B

Billy B
Star clients:
Lady Gaga, Pink, Beyoncé
Cheap and chic: "I don't think you have to spend a lot of money on lip gloss," says Billy B. "I think that lip gloss is like fragrance, it's really personal to a woman. I don't think you have to spend a lot of money on mascara. I love L'Oréal Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black and any of the lip balms that come in a pot, not menthol, just the regular ones, because for certain jobs I want more of a satin finish on camera, not a high shine, so that's how I do that. I like Embryolisse moisturizer, but I also like Eucerin. I'm a huge fan of Eucerin for body shine -- it's really, really good. And baby oil gel -- I'm a huge fan of baby oil gel, not the oil, the gel.
Beauty must-haves: "My eyelash curler from my line -- I have a whole line of brushes, MAC Studio Fix Powder in the compact, L'Oréal Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black, MAC Smolder Pencil and I never go anywhere without lashes. I don't necessarily use them on every job, but I would never go on a job without them. I'm all about the drugstore brand. I can even tell you which ones. They're the Ardell numbers 53, 110 and 45.

Oscars 2011 Lead Makeup Artist Bruce Grayson on Celebrity Beauty Trends and Backstage Touch-Ups

Before Oscars presenters hit the stage and when winners walk off clutching their beloved trophies, lead makeup artist Bruce Grayson and his tireless team touch them up.

With so many comings and goings, changing looks and countless awards, we had to get the skinny on how the man behind the makeup brush keeps everything running smoothly in the beauty department.

StyleList: How do you think Oscars beauty has changed over the years? What defines Hollywood glamour in terms of red carpet beauty now?
Bruce Grayson: We saw a really great dichotomy of different makeup looks. We saw some great smoky eyes, which I thought were brilliant. Mila Kunis looked absolutely gorgeous with her smoky eyes. Then we saw some hard lines with dramatic shimmery shadows. Anne Hathaway did this very well against a bold lip. The common thread running through the night was that all of the makeup was on great, great skin, which means taking care of dark circles underneath the eyes and concealing them.

SL: What are your favorite tips or tricks for quick backstage touch-ups before a star hits the stage?
B.G.: It is really important to smooth out concealer underneath the eye to ensure the finished look is blended and clean; cleaning up the lip line with a nude color lip liner pencil or using concealer to sharpen the lips; powder, but only in places where you need it like above the brows, inner cheeks or slightly underneath the eyes, but leave the rest of the face aglow, and that's about it!

SL: Which celebrity look did you love at Oscars 2011?
B.G.: My favorite look was Gwyneth Paltrow. She just had really beautiful polished bronze eyes against a nude pink lip. It was really simplistic, but it looked great. She was very natural with the hair parted down the middle -- it was gorgeous.

No one changed looks more at the Oscars 2011 than co-host Anne Hathaway. Review her many styles and grab tips to achieving the look at home.

Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' Video Glam Squad Talks Beauty Look

The world has pretty much learned to expect the unexpected from Lady Gaga, and with today's premiere of her highly anticipated "Born This Way" video, the artist didn't disappoint in the categories of pushing boundaries and imagination.

Alien-egg-hatching scenes aside (you knew we hadn't seen the last of podlike images as they pertain to Gaga), the beauty looks ranged from beautiful glowing skin with dramatically winged eyeliner to carefully crafted skeleton face paint to dark raccoon eyes with muted lips.

At The Makeup Show: Los Angeles last weekend, StyleList had the opportunity to chat with renowned makeup artists Billy B, who is the man responsible for her "Born This Way" makeup looks -- plus a variety of others, from the most over-the-top to the more natural -- and James Vincent, who worked with the video's dancers.

While these makeup masterminds didn't want to divulge too many details before the video premiere, Billy B filled us in on what it's like to work with such a creative and unique client on such a large-scale project.

"You can plan all day long on what you're going to do and even discuss it with her a million times what you're going to do -- and then you never know until you're actually doing it what it's going to end up being," he explains. "That's one of the things that I love about working with Lady Gaga. As long as I've been doing this, no matter how I might think I've done everything, I never know with her. I'm constantly challenged and it's always inspired and it's always exciting and it's always a risk."

As far as products used, we definitely expected an appearance by one of Lady Gaga's most personal projects: her involvement with MAC Viva Glam.

"Of course we used Viva Glam, which she's so passionate about," says Billy B. "She's very, very involved with that. I use a lot of MAC. I use anything that works, personally. I don't necessarily believe that a high price tag determines what's better, so as a makeup artist I'll use everything from Wet 'n Wild to MAC or Christian Dior or Chanel. It depends on if I like it and it does what I need it to do. I love Face Atelier foundation and L'Oréal Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black. So it ranges from drugstore to high-end makeup."

As far as the dancers were concerned, Vincent was all about keeping their look raw and natural.

"I looked at products like Embryolisse for skin care and YSL Touche Éclat to make the skin look luminous," he says. "I love the Makeup Forever HD Elixir. For me, it was about keeping the skin really amazing. I love the OCC Lip Tar in Interlace. I really wanted it to be kind of natural and really playing up the shapes and features of the performers."

For Vincent, whose work appears across fashion runways, editorial pages and celebrities the world over, working on the "Born This Way" video was still a treat.

"Gaga is so brilliant at bringing across new ideas and new concepts, and I was thrilled to be able to be a part of it," he says. "It really is going to be one of those iconic images and videos that people look at and Billy does the most beautiful work with her. It was really special to be there, and I think there are going to be a lot of surprises when people see the video -- that people are going to go wow."

Take a look at how Lady Gaga's "little monsters" honored the artist at a recent concert at New York's Madison Square Garden.
