Kelly Rutherford on LED Facials, White Jeans and Sun Protection

Kelly Rutherford

By a stroke of luck, we placed our bag on the chair next to the one secretly reserved for the guest of honor at the New York City Zeno editor event for the launch of their new at-home anti-aging device and serum kit, Line Rewind.

When Kelly Rutherford, the matriarch of "Gossip Girl," took that seat, we were obviously thrilled.

Rutherford is a fan of the new Zeno device and has the luminous skin to match. "I pay so much for facials that include the light treatments at the end and now I can have that at home," she said.

Zeno Line Rewind is the first at-home device to combine LED light, heat and vibration in the battle against wrinkles. Included with the device is Line Rewind Serum, which was created to work in tandem and deliver resveratrol (the powerful antioxidant in red wine) and a peptide complex that promotes cell turnover.

The heat helps open pores and allows the serum to be better absorbed, the vibration increases microcirculation to the skin and the red LED has been shown to enhance collagen production, all of which help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, the serum's pearlized particles give skin a glow and the massaging device actually feels like a spa treatment.

"The way it warms up your skin, it's very nurturing," says Rutherford, who's also a fan of the serum for her dry, sensitive skin.

The 42-year-old actress, who looked quite chic in her neutral ensemble -- including beige, patent platform Christian Louboutin heels and a putty bowling bag from her eponymous handbag line for QVC -- dished on a few of her favorite spring fashion staples. "I really like white jeans, especially skinny capris. I like my ankles to breathe."

Like many women, Rutherford lightens up her makeup routine during the warm weather season. Her must-haves: Stila cream blush and Lip Glaze and, of course, sunscreen. "I use California Baby a lot for myself and my kids, because I know it doesn't contain anything bad."

As for her "Gossip Girl" beauty look: "We don't use too much makeup or powder. We do use MakeUpForEver base and some bronzer to warm up skin, rather than blush," Rutherford said.

When we asked if she would still get facials in addition to using Zeno Line Rewind, she said yes and even shared her favorite estheticians -- Dangene in New York City and Verabella in Los Angeles. We're booking our appointment now!

Illamasqua Launches Toxic Nature Nail Polish Collection for Spring 2011

British beauty brand Illamasqua has developed a cult following for its highly-pigmented formulas and vivid colors. And their latest nail polish collection, Toxic Nature, is for the hardcore makeup enthusiast -- timid, taupe fans need not apply.

The Toxic Nature nail line features five rich shades including: Purity (a creamy peach), Bacterium (pearlized bronze), Radium (chartreuse), Stagnate (earthy mauve) and Gamma (neon orange).

"Having an artist background highly influenced this collection. The medium of paint when it is in various states [mixed on a palette, on a canvas, the washes mutating when you wash your brushes] inspired the product colors of Toxic Nature. Blends, washes, dabs, drips, daubs and splashes of color are evident in the imagery of the collection," said Alex Box, creative director at Illamasqua.

The edgy brand is known for releasing videos to accompany launches and the Toxic Nature collection is no exception. The short film above features lots of dabs, dribs and splashes of color.

Incorporated in the footage is the following artistic statement: "Enter the apocalyptic wastelands, a world of corrupted hues, poisonous pastels and a torrent of hybrid shades...This is an atomic-botanical environment where survival is key and camouflage by color is the path to existence ..."

Illamasqua Toxic Nature nail polish collection ($14 each) will be available in April at select Sephora stores and Sephora.com.

Yes To Tomatoes Attacks Blemishes With Daily Pore Scrub and Spot Stick

We're fans of the Yes To line because it always manages to combine the best in science and nature to gently coddle our (and babies' too) hair and skin, while donating a portion of the brand's proceeds to the Yes To Seed Fund, a nonprofit that supports sustainable agriculture.

For spring, the Yes To Tomatoes lineup gets two additions to help your quest for clear skin. The products feature potent antioxidant lycopene, which when applied topically helps protect skin from environmental damage and has anti-inflammatory properties.

The Clear Skin Spot Stick ($9.99) employs salicylic acid (to purge pores of dead skin cells) and tea-tree oil (for antibacterial and drying benefits), plus ginger root and bisabolol, which are proven to reduce redness and calm inflammation by 50 percent within 48 hours. Also, any product delivered via roller ball is a hit with us because it means we can keep our fingers, and bacteria, out of it.

We love a good exfoliator and the Daily Pore Scrub ($9.99) doesn't disappoint. It packs the salicylic acid, ginger root and bisabolol mentioned above, plus ground mango seeds and bamboo for a gentle sloughing effect that left our skin smoother and paved the way for whatever active ingredients we're applying next.

Nordstrom Beauty Spring 2011 Predictions: Bright Lips, Iridescent Eyes and Smoky Nails

Bright lips are abloom for spring, with iridescent eyes and day-to-night nails rounding out the season's top beauty trends, according to a recent panel of beauty experts hosted by Nordstrom.

"A statement lip is the easiest way to get ready in the morning," said Dior artist Ricky Wilson, meaning you can leave the rest of your face mostly bare if you focus on a vivid lip shade of coral, pink or tangerine. For the more timid lip-color wearer, Rick DiCecca of Estée Lauder suggests, "You don't have to choose a full-on opaque bright, try a stain, gloss or even a sheer lipstick."

Wilson and DiCecca were among the beauty leaders who shared their insight at the Nordstrom Beauty spring trends event for editors and bloggers in New York City. Other experts on the panel included Deborah Lippmann (celebrity manicurist and owner of Deborah Lippmann nail lacquer), Jerry Johnson (Laura Mercier artist) and John Trau (Burberry Beauty director of education).

"Nordy" recently launched a "beauty stylists" program, which means you can have a personal shopper just for beauty products, who'll help you shop across all categories and brands. This makes for a customized experience and a more streamlined one, as the "stylist" gets to know you and your skin-care and makeup needs.

Nordy's panel of experts let us in on their favorite trends for spring and showed some hot-ticket products exclusive to Nordstrom.

Best bet for the bright-lip look? MAC Cosmetics Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Insanely It.

We also loved the iridescent eye looks Nordy is fond of for spring. With Laura Mericer Baked Eye Color, you can try shades like turquoise and violet in the sheerest veil of color. "If you want to go bolder, use them with a wet brush. Either way, the color is buildable," said Johnson.

By far, the coolest product and idea we learned of at the Nordy Trend event was the concept of creating day-to-night nails with Dior Vernis Rock Top Coat. (Note:This product hits counters sometime in March and is limited edition.) It's a sheer veil of smoky gunmetal that can be applied on top of whatever shade of polish you're wearing for a decidedly going-out effect. We're predicting a sellout!

It's totally possible to buy spring trends now and, with a little creative styling, be able to wear them before the big thaw.

Topical Botox Study Looks Promising, Experts Say

Medical researcher

Topical botox study produces results that are promising, according to experts. Photo: Getty

When we saw the first study of topical botulinum toxin, the active ingredient in the drug Botox, we knew we needed professional insight into the findings and what they might mean to you as a beauty consumer. Botox is a product of pharmaceutical giant Allergan; the study was sponsored by competitor Revance Therapeutics.

We spoke to dermatologist Jeannette Graf of Great Neck, N.Y., and New York City facial plastic surgeon Andrew Jacono.

To clarify, "botulinum toxin is a purified toxin that is injected into the muscle groups that we want to relax, and by relaxing these muscles we diminish the amount of movement in them. By not having the prolonged expression in these muscles, you won't develop the resulting lines, " Graf told StyleList. She also explained that there are depressor and elevator muscles on the face, so when you relax the depressor muscles with an injectable form of botulinum toxin, the elevator muscles strengthen and that's why you see a lift. These effects generally last four to six months.

"This is a good first study. The idea of it (topical botulinum toxin gel) has been talked about for a while. It looks promising. The crow's feet area is the logical place to start because the skin is thin there. It could work eventually in other areas, with this type of transdermal delivery," said Graf.

In the study, the botulinum toxin gel was mixed two hours prior to applying it to the crow's feet of 36 participants (32 women and four men, 35 to 60 years old). "I would assume that this would be an in-office treatment," said Graf. "And I think it could potentially be a great application for excessive underarm sweating."

From another perspective, Jacono "thinks it's a great idea but it has limited effects. When people get Botox injections, they see a three- or four-point improvement in wrinkles right away. The problem with this treatment is that it makes only a one-point or slight improvement (about 25 percent of what the injectible botulinum toxin does), so as a result it makes it more difficult for a patient to justify the treatment. Also, this is being tested on the crow's feet area because it's thinnest skin on your whole body and the gel can reach the muscles you want to relax. It would never work on the other areas of the face because that skin is much thicker."

"I know that when I give patients 50 percent improvement from a treatment they're not happy, so I don't know if people will go for this, unless the price is right. This will not replace Botox injections," Jacono told StyleList.

While it's too early to tell if this is a viable treatment to get 100 percent improvement on wrinkles, if approved, it will give those with a fear of needles more options. "It's not invasive and does work, but it doesn't give the same results (as injectable botulinum toxin). I always advise people to be cautious of brand-new treatments. When we start to use the treatments on patients, that's when we get the experience in how the product works in the real world," explains Dr. Jacono.

It's also too soon to draw conclusions about the price of the treatments, so we can't assume that they will be any less expensive than injectable botulinum toxin.

"What we do know is that this was a successful first study, which was meant to show the efficacy and safety of the product and that Revance (the company that sponsored the study) can now move on to the next level of investigation," said Graf.

Stay tuned for more news on noninvasive cosmetic procedures. StyleList is always on the lookout for treatments that will make us look younger without downtime!
