Super Bowl Party Recap from Miami

Whether you were cheering for the Colts or the Saints, there was no shortage of revelry during Super Bowl weekend in Miami. There were more open bars than a prison breakout and stars such as Jessica Alba, Fergie, and Jimmy Fallon in the mix. Here's the rundown of the celebrity-soaked scene:

It started early on Saturday with a boozy brunch – complete with DIY Bloody Mary bar – hosted by all-star MLB pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen. They threw a $1000-a-plate fundraising brunch on top of the Viceroy hotel downtown to help juice their charity dedicated to helping children under physical and emotional distress.

Also on hand was star chef Mario Batali who was celebrating the launch of his own eponymous foundation. (Batali and Moyer became friends when the chef started buying salami from the baseball player's dad.) As Batali and Emeril Lagasse tag-teamed the crowd with demos, Jimmy Fallon mingled, admitting he was a hopeless cook. "But I've just gotten a crockpot," he enthused. "If you get one, just tweet about it and people will start sending you recipes."

Food was scarcer later that evening at Michael Bay's house, where a star-spattered dinner planned on the sprawling manse's roof was canceled because of the chilly weather (the food was plated and turned into passed appetizers indoors). Bay was hosting another sporting charity bash, this time for The Giving Back Fund, which helps rich sports stars morph into philanthropists. Clearly, someone at the CW owed the director a favor. Making red carpet appearances were '90210 2.0' vixen Annalynne McCord with boyfriend Kellan Lutz, and 'Gossip Girl' couple Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr. The latter couple's flight from N.Y.C. was canceled from the snow, so he had barely made the celebrity football game on the beach earlier that day. Not that it mattered. "I don't know the rules anyway, mate," he laughed.

Late night on the Super Bowl's eve, it was a laddie mag smack down between two bashes for Playboy and Maxim. Both were vying for A-list attendance, but poor Maxim ended up with the C-list pairing of Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo. (They had embarrassingly been denied entry to the bash at LIV inside the Fontainebleau the night before.) Maxim's cred improved when Nelly and Lennox Lewis arrived at the Raleigh hotel, but leave it to 'CSI: Miami' newbie Omar Miller to then take it back down a notch. "What makes a good party, man? A limbo pole, some lubricant and pineapple," he said before ducking inside around midnight.

The gaggles of bunny-clad Playmates and live mermaids in the pool at the party Playboy and Bacardi threw for the Black Eye Peas' a few doors down at the Sagamore that didn't keep Fergie away – she's a brave woman. But 'The Dutchess' didn't show up in the Bacardi box at the game itself, though will.i.am and the other Peas did. Jessica Alba and David Spade lurked there together, too (no, we didn't know they were friends, either). Meanwhile Kate Walsh didn't seem to pay much attention to the game, instead opting to snap photos of herself with the gridiron behind her. Maybe she's over big game and prefers, ahem, a private practice.

Super Bowl Fashion - What to Wear On Game Day

Everything's super this February, from the models – Fashion Week starts in New York on February 11 – to the Bowl, taking place in Miami, Florida this Sunday. But, as you can imagine, there's a big difference in the crowds: the size-0 social X-rays filling the whitewashed bleachers in Bryant Park are thinking about Proenza Schouler, while the fans at Sun Life Stadium will be chanting Peyton! Peyton!...Or not depending on your allegiance!

To help bridge the gap between the two fanatical factions of society, we've tapped celebrity stylists -and fashion referees!- Mary Alice Stephenson and Robert Verdi to offer tips on how to keep the style penalties to a minimum during this weekend's big game.

From reinterpreting your own Saints shirt to finding some patriotic polish, here are the duo's suggestions for looking chic in the stands (or at the party where you want to impress a certain someone):
  • Stephenson has a simple mantra when prepping for a few hours in the bleachers: amped-up glamour. "How do you support your team? You never sacrifice the glamour factor," she says. "Let the guys be casual – glam it up, wear sequins in the sun." If you're a New Orleans fan, opt for a black sparkly top instead of an oversized and ill-fitting jersey.
  • Her pre-game ritual would not include making that clam dip but rather browsing the current line from Topshop which has sports-inspired clothes including embellished, colorful jackets and lots of sequins. She also likes the jewel-toned and sporty cashmere sweaters from Talbots. "You've got to honor your team by dressing like it's a red carpet affair so go for it, make a statement, and look your most gorgeous for the boys on the field."
  • Sporty spice: Fergie channels cheerleader chic at a Lakers game. Photo: Getty Images

    • Take a cue from your favorite celebs: Fergie recently borrowed a Naeem Khan gown for a sporty excursion. "Not to go to a premiere, or the Grammy Awards, but to sit front row courtside at a Lakers' game," says Stephenson. "She's showing the boys they're just as important as Grammy night." The Pea princess isn't alone: Beyoncé and Rihanna are also often spotted glammed up while they catch a game.
    • The Super Bowl is a great excuse to invest in one of the on-trend bold shoulder, boxy jackets. Think of it as an homage to football's padding without seeming like a costume. (In fact, designer Alexander Wang dedicated his entire Spring 2010 collection to football-themed ensembles.) "If you want to get in the sporty mood, you can do it that way, by incorporating shoulder pads – it doesn't mean you actually have to buy the jersey," says Stephenson.
    • Verdi agrees that the jerseys are passé and suggests hitting American Apparel for slim fit brights in team colors, and layering them against the cold. He also likes the bright colored cashmere sweaters from the Talbots line that Stephenson favors. If you're outside in the chillier temperatures, he suggests a pair of cozy Ugg boots for footwear.
    • Stephenson also recommends less over-the-top options too: stick to accessories. Cover your purse with pins that you can buy at T-shirt stands – a team-boosting gesture that's also on-trend. "Dolce & Gabbana has been doing pins all over handbags for a while, they piled them on, and now it's starting to hit the mainstream," she says.
    • In terms of beauty, paint your nails in a crazy, high-gloss nail color like Sephora's $5 Bleu Jean of Chanel's Blue Satin for the Indianapolis Colts. Go for a spangly gold color like "Look Rich, Be Cheap" by Rescue Beauty Lounge for the New Orleans Saints. (Too bad the Washington Redskins aren't playing, fans could easily honor the squad with a slash of bright red lipstick or a sizzling scarlet polish.)
    • Whatever you do, avoid the full body paint. Stephenson encourages flashes of team colors in make up or polish, but both she and Verdi are both adamant on this point. "People get mad at drag queens for wearing less make up than some of these people who are on the stands at games," chuckles Verdi.

The Original Queens of the Red Carpet

If award show newbies need inspiration for the impending awards show season, there's a smarter source than Rachel Zoe and company. The new guard should turn to the few true originals who still break fashion rules (yet still own their looks) whenever the flashbulbs pop.

"There are two points in your life when you can take risks: when you're very young, and when you're older, because you've lived through everything," says celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch. "Those women are kind of 'been there, done that.'"

In his forthcoming book, "The Shopping Diet" Bloch celebrates women of a certain age who choose to grow old disgracefully. "She's the kind of woman who has traveled the world, and picks up things along the way so they become part of who she is. It's not just her wardrobe but her medals of honor." These women are more devil-may-care than "Devil Wears Prada."

"Anytime a woman expresses who she is on the red carpet, I applaud it," adds Rob Zangardi, whose client roster includes Rihanna and Rachel McAdams. "And these women who don't play it safe? They're an inspiration to the younger stars to take chances. And as a stylist, I appreciate that." (Translation: maybe Zangardi won't have to call in so many snooze-inducing LBDs next year.)

This awards season, some of the prissier Fashion Police may class these women as repeat offenders, but the red carpet would be dull without them (not to mention that Joan Rivers and co. would be out of a job). It may be easy to pillory fashion risk takers of a certain age, but it's through visionaries – whether YSL's trouser suit or Rudi Gernreich's monokini - that fashion advances.

We've spotlit our ten favorite fashion outliers and asked our two fashion savants to examine what makes them true originals.

Banned Holiday Gifts - and What to Replace Them With

Every year, we each receive gifts more likely to cause grimaces than glee. Those are the half-unwrapped disappointments that are instantly consigned to the emergency regifting closet (yes, scented candle, we're looking at you).

In 2009, it's time for all that to end: we've put together a list of Banned Gifts that should be excised from every shopping list come the holiday season and never seen under a tree again. We've also tapped two gift-giving gurus for their insights in offering better ideas. There's Lindsi Shine, who runs the VIP concierge service InsiderNYC and is relied on by the rich, famous, and impatient to shop on their behalf. And for insight into what really bores boys - and the ways to reinspire them - gadget expert and all-round style aficionado Tyler Thoreson.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters and Bad Holiday Outfits

Every year, it's the same – more crimes against fashion are committed in December than ever. Think ugly Christmas sweaters, green and red outfits, Fair Isle explosions, and Santa-inspired dresses.

We tapped two crack stylists to intervene: Elle Werlin, who's worked with Beyoncé and Jessica Szohr, and Sam Spector, a veteran of Mischa Barton and Kristin Cavallari.

The pair have identified the worst holiday outfits, and the celebrities who've succumbed to the temptation. They are also here to offer hope ('tis the season after all!) in the form of fashionista-approved alternatives.
