Carrie Underwood: 'The Style Thing Has Evolved for Me' [Gallery]

Country singer-songwriter Carrie Underwood makes her big-screen debut this Friday in "Soul Surfer," the true story of Bethany Hamilton, the teenager who became a pro surfer after losing her arm to a shark attack.

"It's such an inspirational story," says Underwood, the 2005 "American Idol" winner, who plays the supporting role of a youth counselor to Hamilton (played by AnnaSophia Robb).

The smaller part suits Underwood while she eases into acting. "So many people come from the music world and jump into a starring role, and then get made fun of for it," she told StyleList during interviews for the film in Los Angeles. "I didn't want a movie where the success of it was all on my shoulders."

Underwood looked extremely feminine in a floral-print spring dress and coral heels (which she later switched for the nude, floral-print tiered dress with black heels that she is wearing in the photograph). "There is a departure from your human side and your work side," she said about dressing up for photographers. "When you're at home, you're not wearing heels or your work attire!"

"I try to dress appropriate to the event that I'm going to. The style thing has evolved for me just because I have more options now. Before, it was wherever I found things or if it belonged to one of my friends or sister. I still have hand-me-downs from my sister who is a decade older than me."

The newlywed said she feels a new pressure when picking out her wardrobe. "I just got married (to hockey player Mike Fisher). It hasn't even been a year yet. It influences what I wear because I don't want people assuming I'm pregnant. Now I try to stay away from baggy outfits because I don't want people to think, Oh, she's hiding something. Now I have to think a little extra. We have plenty of time to have kids."

Even though it seems like a fairy-tale existence, Underwood said, "I live the most boring life away from what you see me doing on the stage. I consider myself a normal person that likes to perform. When I'm at home, I'm Carrie the person in sweatpants. When I'm 'Carrie Underwood,' I'm dressed like this."

"Soul Surfer," also starring Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid, is in theaters everywhere this Friday.

'Super'-Uncomfortable: Liv Tyler, Ellen Page and Rainn Wilson in Spandex

It seems those movie superhero costumes are every bit as uncomfortable as they look.

In "Super," which opens Friday, Rainn Wilson plays an average Joe who tries to win back his wife by taking on a sidekick (Ellen Page) and fighting crime as comic book alter-egos.

"It was hot and I was sweaty. It wasn't fun," Wilson told StyleList of his red Spandex costume as the Crimson Bolt. "I'm a guy from the Pacific Northwest. I'm the most comfortable in jeans and a flannel shirt."

Fortunately for fashion-lovers, Liv Tyler is also in the film.

"I watched 'The Hulk' as a child growing up, and I did have Wonder Woman Underoos," she shared with us about her own childhood with comic book characters. But, she did break out a little more than Underoos for the film's premiere.

"I still enjoy getting dressed up and doing the red carpet," Tyler said. "I'm not tiny. I'm not big, but I'm not a size two. I'm tall and I'm broad. I usually collaborate with Givenchy."

Tyler has been working with Givenchy for the past eight years, but at "Super" her slim fitted black pants and black blazer were Helmut Lang. "Tonight though, I only have my black Givenchy clutch and I'm wearing their lipstick. My shoes are Christian Louboutin."

"My mother and my grandmother were both models, I'm pretty natural," she said of her beauty look. "I wont go out with a full face of makeup on just in my daily life. I do always have a little something on though."

Tyler's shiny hair was tended to by hairstylist David Babaii (read his about secrets to styling Liv here.) "When I read the script for this movie, I wanted to try a new look with my hair for this character," she said, laughing. "That was a disaster! I went blond. It totally washed me out completely. I can do platinum but not medium blond. We had to fix that right away!"

Ellen Page also spent most of the movie in Spandex superhero garb, but she told us she doesn't get caught up much with fashion.

"I like it, but really I just want to be comfortable," she said, dressed simply in head-to-toe black. "Basically, I have a friend that helps me out. I just try to not look stupid."

Levi's Joins Young Women to 'Shape What's to Come'

It was an inspiring evening of girl power at Thursday night's preview dinner for Levi's upcoming documentary "Shape What's to Come." The film follows eight of the 50 passionate young women Levi's tapped from around the globe to journal their remarkable lives.

"The DNA of our brand is enabling millennial women to pursue their passion," Levi's senior director of global marketing Michael Perman said at the event, which was attended by singer Jewel and actress Justine Bateman. "Right now it's all about a new generation of women discovering who they're meant to be and taking nonlinear paths to get there. They are transcending society's definition of success."

Along with the film, the journals these women filled with their altruistic endeavors will be on display at the first TEDWomen, an ideas conference for women in business and philanthropy.

Levi's and AOL are among the key sponsors for that event, to be held in Washington, D.C., on December 7 - 8. Excerpts of the journals can also be found on ShapeWhatsToCome.com, an online community that supports other Generation Y women and encourages them to realize their dreams through collaboration and mentoring.

One of the film's subjects, 23-year-old Katie Spotz, was the youngest person to row across the Atlantic Ocean solo and raised $100,000 to promote clean drinking water in developing countries.

"My family doesn't have any sailing experience and my parents weren't thrilled, but it was something I was called to do," Spotz said at the dinner, where she accepted a $5,000 donation from Levi's. "I saw men do it. It was time for a woman to do it and it could bring attention to promoting clean water."

Lindsay Pollack, an author and consultant on the subject of Generation Y, said: "What's unique about this generation is that they don't feel as though they have any barriers. Katie will sail across the ocean or start a company and they don't feel they have to do things traditionally. The media perception of this generation is that they're entitled or coddled or lazy. They're not. We are just intimidated that they don't have any timelines and they are achieving these extraordinary things."

Chiara Clemente, who directed the documentary, said: "'Shape What's To Come' follows eight women around the world and what they all have in common -- making a difference in it. This new generation of women coming up really gives the world hope that we are in for a great change."

Also among the 100 guests at a converted home in West Hollywood was Mary Alderete, the vice president of global marketing for Levi's.

"Our brand of jeans has become really synonymous with men and we are making the commitment to reconnect with women," she said. "ShapeWhatsToCome.com is a two-pronged approach: We want to spotlight that Levi's fits not only the shape of a woman's body but the shape of women's future."

Bravo's "Thintervention" star, Jackie Warner, added: "Mentoring has always been a huge part of my life. ShapeWhatsToCome.com is so important to show other women that we will be supportive of each other. The boys club is not the same anymore. In Hollywood, women have been having each others' backs."

Toni Braxton at Fendi Benefit: 'I Have Lupus'

Singer Toni Braxton announced publicly for the first time that she suffers from the disease lupus at a benefit supported by the fashion industry Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Around 800 women attended the eighth annual Lupus L.A. Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon, hosted by "Access Hollywood"'s Shaun Robinson.

Guests were treated to a Fendi fashion show and an auction of handbags from Fendi, Gucci, Prada and Versace, as well as from the personal closets of stars including Natalie Portman, Sharon Stone, Paris Hilton and Twiggy.

Braxton, wearing Theory with Chanel jewelry and an Hermès bag, brought her family with her on the red carpet.

"I'm doing a reality show for the WE Network that follows me and the entire family around," she told StyleList.

Are they driving her crazy? "Yes!" she laughed. "They are, but they're here to
support me so I can't say anything bad! The new show is called 'Braxton Family Values.'"

Lisa and Brittny Gastineau also attended, and when StyleList asked Brittny about her rumored relationship with swimmer Michael Phelps, she stayed mum. But not her mom: Lisa said that dating athletes was in the gene pool and confirmed that the Olympic gold medalist was indeed the man in Brittny's life.

Mrs. Snoop Dogg, Shante Broadus, looked fabulous in a fitted black Vivienne Westwood.

"My daughter has lupus," she told us. "She's on the honor roll, she plays sports and she knows when she gets tired that she just has to rest. She is dealing with the disease very well and I'm very proud of her!"

Actress Julie Benz admitted she is the most unfashionable woman in the room. She wore dorky vests and was her high school's worst offender. "I play it safe when I have to dress myself. I tend to go with black and stick to classic labels," she said. "I'm trying to be more trendy and take some risks, so now I'm working with a stylist."

Honoree Rachel Zoe, who just confirmed her pregnancy, wore a black Fendi dress that was fitted everywhere, except around her midsection, and Louis Vuitton heels. Asked what bag she would grab if she could only take one with her, Zoe responded: "My Hermès -- that's tough to think about, just having one bag, though!"

The luncheon managed to raise more than $300,000 for Lupus L.A.
