Sang A Spring 2011 Handbag Review

DESIGNER: Sang A

INSPIRATION: "Downtown, innovative luxury" was the catch phrase stated on the press release.

WHO WAS THERE: A bevy of chic editors hanging out at the iconic Plaza Hotel.

ACCESSORIES: Always, all the time!

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Sang A delivered yet another season of elegant, subdued handbags for day, work and weekend. Exposed, oversized zipper details – featured on the Wave, a soft-square tote with quilted wave panel; the Cross, a rounded duffel bag; and the Drop, a semi-structured long tote with graphic contrast body – somehow seemed delicate in the design hands of Sang A Im-Propp.

For those of us who don't care for brights, we're in luck. The color palette was rather cool for spring with stony grays, crisp black and white contrast, and brushed burnt-gold python highlights.

Sneak Peek at Milly's Spring 2011 Accessories Collection

As reported on StyleList in August, contemporary fashion house Milly is branching into accessories for Spring 2011.

Following Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, where the accessories made their official debut, a select group of editors got the chance to preview the collection of handbags and jewelry at the Milly showroom in New York City's Garment District.

Witty with a wink of glamour, Milly designer Michelle Smith gives fans what they have come to love from the ready-to-wear line: easy-to-wear pieces bursting with optimism and color. It's hard not to want to skip with joy and wish for springtime sun with vibrant colors on the Costa Bava resin and wood necklace and the '50s inspired Tomato Rattan bracelet bag.

"I set out in designing my handbag collection with the same philosophy and aesthetic as my ready-to-wear collection. The Milly aesthetic is smart, sexy, and glamorous. It's a modern sensibility with a vintage vibe that epitomizes uptown sophistication meets downtown cool," Smith told StyleList.

The spring season was heavily inspired by Peggy Guggenheim and her eccentric, art-loving, globe-trotting lifestyle. Colors are bold all around, jewelry has a tribal and worldly feel, and handbags are a bit more structured and finished in luxurious, full-grain leathers such as soft, tumbled napa lamb, shiny goatskin, and glossy patent.

Resin tortoise chains and custom-made hardware, particularly gold-button detailing, pepper an assortment of silhouettes.

In addition to solid leather, the Milly must-have prints are all over the collection, including an oversize red-roses pattern that appears on a large tote with resin handles, ideal for work or the beach.

Other patterns include a Cubist print of tiled red, yellow, white, green, black, and brown bars going horizontally; a smartly rainbow Mallorca Print; a red/navy Chevron Print; a violet flower print; and an Ink Tribal Zig Zag Print.

Nearly all prints appear on the medium size, Milly flap-over shoulder bag with resin chain and leather handle.

The handbags, ranging in price from $250 to $525, will hit stores in January and be carried at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Harrods, and upscale specialty stores around the world as well as millyny.com.

The jewelry, which had a soft launch in 2010, will range from $88 to $325 for spring 2011.

Kooba Handbags and Shoes - Spring 2011 Preview

Out with the old and in with the new isn't always the best path for design success. But with a little tweaking, Abbe Held, creative director of Kooba, has taken some of the brand's classics and made them fresh for 2011.

The hugely successful Natasha shoulder bag, for example, will be offered in new colors and textured leather, and comes with a sleeker snap-lock hardware closure.

Of course, there is plenty of newness like the Dasha hobo made from butter-soft leather that effortlessly molds to the body.

"It's soft, easy, and very versatile. It's my favorite bag of the season," says Held.

The main focus for silhouettes is versatility in design via multiwear options. Functionality is key for Kooba, as seen in the Lyndi purse that can be worn as a clutch or the handheld Shannon satchel with a detachable shoulder strap.

Kooba is giving the woman options. "It's like having a new bag every day," Held proclaims.

The brand is also giving its customers shoes, as Spring 2011 sees the full offering of Kooba footwear after Fall 2010's soft launch.

"Footwear design is truly miniature architecture. Every element of the shoe matters to the functionality and fit. We're focused on building a beautiful collection based on edgy yet easy silhouettes."

The assortment of Kooba shoes, handcrafted in Italy, includes flats, medium and high wedges, and thick and cone heels. Expect ankle straps, criss-cross detailing, and mixed materials like cork, soft leather, suede, and wood.

The shoes will be sold across the United States in high-end boutiques, internationally at Harvey Nichols Hong Kong, and on the brand's e-commerce site.

As for the color story, Held feels that, "For spring, pale taupes mixed with natural naked Vachetta tans are beautiful colors. And accenting neutral hues with rich and vibrant darker tones make for an eye-catching pallet."

She also forecasts that for Fall 2011, "We will be seeing many shades of gray with deep mahogany accents."

Rebecca Minkoff Spring 2011 - Runway Review

rebecca minkoff presentation spring 2011 sequin envelope clutch black leather piping snake skin

WWD, CondÈ Nast/Corbis

DESIGNER Rebecca Minkoff

INSPIRATION: 70's seductress Bianca Jagger mixed with free-spirited Janis Joplin

TOP LOOKS: A well-edited pallet dominated by fleshy nudes, white, black, greys, a shock of red and occasional navy blue; shorts as the new mini skirt is the biggest take away; pearlized leather jackets with plenty of hardware infuse Joplin rock'n roll to delicately, draped silk dresses or skirts

ACCESSORIES: Natch, the Morning After Bag came out to play in cream with black leather piping; other handbag styles included new clutches, plenty of crossbodies and long strap options even on lady-like top handle bags; silver studding was the key embellishment on many silhouettes and a 70s-infused collection would not be complete without a bucket bag with fringe; shoes, the newest addition to the growing Rebecca Minkoff empire, were offered in the form of nude suede booties, plenty of wedges in mixed cord and leather finishes, and a lust-worthy nude base sandal with thick black lacing to the ankle

WHO WAS THERE: Michelle Trachtenberg, Shenae Grimes, and Albert Hammond

WHAT WE THOUGHT: We are sold on the new work wardrobe staple, shorts – draped silk, pleated linen or trimmed in leather, all will do. From afar many of Minkoff's shorts looked like full skirts, but up-close one sees the bohemian ease only a short can accomplish. Paired with blouses, blazers or a simple tank – and almost always topped with a leather jacket – this free-spirited, yet sophisticated ensemble truly embodies Minkoff's vision of "paying homage to the ultimate femme vagabond – a woman yearning for glamour, transfixed by reconstructed vintage." And lest we forget about 70's temptress Bianca Jagger, she was represented in the form of draped dresses and shorts, billowing silk pants, and an off-the-shoulder ruffled dress.
