What We're Trying Now: Matte Pink Lips

Clockwise from left: Jamie McCarthy - WireImage, Jil Sander SS11 - GoRunway.com, DVF SS11 - GoRunway.com, Josie Maran Cosmetics, Stephen Lovekin - Getty Images, DVF SS11 - GoRunway.com

By now, with summer almost more than half over, most of us have acquired some sort of tan -- real or fake. Either way, the best thing to pair with slightly bronzed skin is a pink lip. We're talking bright, day-glo, basically neon. This week, we're channeling the super-saturated, matte lip color at DVF and Jil Sander this past spring. Emma Stone and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld have also followed suit, wearing the somewhat shocking shade with an otherwise bare face. (With color this extreme, it's best to keep the rest of your makeup minimal.)

As far as getting a matte finish, color that actually stays AND lips that won't dry out, you have a few options. The new NYX matte lip creams are amazing: vivid pigment but with a cushy balm-like texture. Also in the way of super-hydrating: Josie Maran's double-ended Magic Marker Lip Stain with Argan creates color and moisture that will last throughout the day. And If you prefer lipstick, blot YSL's Rouge Pur in Fuchsia Pink down to create a stain; repeat to build lasting color.

Where to buy:

YSL Rouge Pur in Fuchsia Pink, $30, yslbeautyus.com

Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream, $6, nyxcosmetics.com

Insider Information: NARS' Francelle Daly Talks Lil Wayne, Summer Makeup And More

Photo: Courtesy of NARS Cosmetics

You could say that New Orleans-born Francelle Daly is one of the coolest makeup artists in the game right now. Working with everyone from Ashley Olsen to Karl Lagerfeld to Ellen von Unwerth (her work has appeared in Vogue, Elle and i-D), Daly is now part of Team NARS, and was appointed as their national makeup artist last year. We caught up with Daly to discuss everything from the music she's loving right now, how she spends her summer weekends and the secret to looking fresh and glowy (even when it's ninety degrees out).

Where do you live?: Brooklyn, New York

Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana

The beauty products you never leave home without: sunscreen, Nars Schiap Lipstick, Mason Pearson hair brush, and NARS PRO-PRIME Skin Smoothing Face Prep.

Melt-proof makeup tips for the summer: Keeping your makeup light is key for surviving the summer! I mix my Nars Sheer Glow Foundation with my moisturizer. It creates a tinted moisturizer effect. It's lighter and fresher on the skin. I also recommend using the Multiple from Nars. It's a multi purpose stick that you can use on the eyes, cheeks and lips. It gives you effortless and easy color.

The last trip you took: Los Angeles, right now it's my second home. I have been traveling there every other week for work. Love the weather and I love to drive!!!

Contents of your travel dop kit: Celine sunglasses, Nars Balancing Foam Cleanser, Nars Aqua Gel Hydrator, Smith's Rosebud Salve and Sheer Glow Foundation in Deauville.

Music you're loving right now: I love all types of music. But being from New Orleans, I love rapper Lil Wayne and especially his new MTV unplugged.

Summer skincare routine: It's a balancing act between looking fresh and keeping cool. Nars Hydrating Toner and Nars Aqua Gel Hydrator keeps my skin cool and not sticky through out the summer months. To help keep my makeup in place it's all about our (Nars) pro prime products, especially the multi-protect primer in SPF 30.

The makeup trend that truly looks good on everyone: Big lush eyelashes with Nars Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara, dewy skin with Nars Sheer Glow Foundation followed by Super Orgasm Blush on cheeks and Gold Digger Larger Than Life Lips Gloss (NEW for Fall 2011!) on the lips.

Last movie you saw: Once Upon a Time in the West by Sergio Leone

A typical summer weekend consists of: Running on the beach, reading a good book and hanging out with my husband.

The Unexpected Icon: Gregory Crewdson Photographs

Clockwise from left: 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2011 - GoRunway.com, Gregory Crewdson In A Lonely Place, YSL, Sula, NARS

There is a sense of both bleakness and beauty seen throughout the images in Gregory Crewdson's forthcoming book, In A Lonely Place. Crewdson, who credits Edward Hopper, David Lynch, Diane Arbus and Cindy Sherman as influences, takes a very cinematic approach to his photographs, employing elaborate sets, lighting and large crews -- even though most of his pictures depict quiet, mysterious moments in small American towns and suburbs.

In the foreword to In A Lonely Place, Crewdson notes that his work always comes back to "the American Dream and its darker inverse," not too dissimilar to the aforementioned artists he claims to have shaped his vision and approach to photography.

This week we're inspired by Crewdson's reflective, dramatically-lit photographs, whose haunting, subdued tones reminds us of the moody makeup at 3.1 Phillip Lim this fall.

Oscar de la Renta On His New Fragrance, Tattoos And More

Photo: Oscar de la Renta

A group of very lucky editors (myself included) were invited out to Oscar de la Renta's sprawling estate in Connecticut last week to meet with the designer, discuss the fragrance he's launching this fall and take a personal tour around his expansive gardens. As you can imagine, it was beyond. All of it. From the lunch prepared with heirloom tomatoes and asparagus grown in his own garden to the perfectly manicured hedge mazes to the scent itself -- a green floral blend of muguet, bergamot, ginger orchid, orange flower and sandalwood.

Before I actually smelled the fragrance, I quickly envisioned the type of woman who would wear it: A lady, and a glamorous one, the ODLR dress-wearing type. SJP-esque. In general, someone WAY fancier than me. With the first spritz, my assumptions were right: It was strong and sophisticated. But by the afternoon, the scent had transformed into something incredibly wearable and slightly musky, in an intriguing, subtle way. Like really pretty skin. I know, I know, this phrase gets thrown around a lot in the fragrance world, but here, in this case, I truly mean it.

The name of the scent, called Live In Love, was actually inspired by someone de la Renta's been working with closely for many years. The designer revealed that at one point during the development of his fragrance, he caught sight of a tattoo on the man who's been making his dress samples in New York for the past two decades: Live In Love was inked on his right arm. He knew immediately what he would call his forthcoming fragrance.

Live In Love will be available this October. oscardelarenta.com
