Reese Witherspoon: Style Evolution

In honor of her 35th birthday on March 22, we're taking a look back at the style evolution of America's sweetheart Reese Witherspoon.

Although the Southern belle started out somewhat tragic in the '90s, donning pleathery jackets, go-go boots and maroon lipstick (although, weren't we all), by the early 2000s, Witherspoon became a consistent red-carpet winner, hitting the sartorial ball out of the park time and time again with ladylike frocks in bold hues.

Here, a look at her biggest hits and misses.

2011 Oscars Dresses: Sheer Beaded Gowns Rule on Michelle Williams, Hailee Steinfeld and Mandy Moore

The red-carpet showcase at the 2011 Oscars has tipped off, and we've already noticed a strong (and gorgeous) trend of sheer beaded gowns.

The first lady to step out in one of these dazzling numbers was Supporting Actress nominee Hailee Steinfeld.

The 14-year-old continued to prove that she's not only talented beyond her years, but also sartorially savvy, opting for a ball gown by Marchesa that she helped design alongside Georgina Chapman.

"From the beginning, when I knew I'd be here, I drew something out -- and this is exactly what I had in mind!" the youngster told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet. "I'm absolutely in love with it."

The teen's ankle-length puffy gown with a slightly pink hue features a sheer sleeveless bodice that almost appeared strapless, along with mounds of crystal-embroidered tulle. The alabaster-skinned beauty paired the pale number with a youthful headband and nude satin pumps.

Another actress making us do a double take was Mandy Moore, who donned a buff-hued Monique Lhuillier dress that almost seemed as if she had gone totally nude, save for some strategically placed silver sequins scattered over her bodice, hips and upper arms.

Like Steinfeld's gown, Moore's stunning frock had a similarly barely-there neckline that made it appear she had an off-the-shoulder gown.

Although she avoided fleshy hues, Michelle Williams also went for a sheer and sparkly floor-sweeper for her turn on the scarlet carpet.

The Best Actress nominee, who sported an adorable icy-blond pixie cut, chose a glamorous white column dress by Chanel Haute Couture that featured thousands and thousands of white pearl-like beads.

How to Make the Oscars' Best Dressed List

Starlets gunning to make the Oscars' best-dressed list this weekend should take notice. We've been studying the most sartorially savvy leading ladies over the past 10 years and have noticed some key trends to heed for those wanting to join the elite ranks of the best dressed.

Rule No. 1: When in doubt, go with a European designer. (Sorry, CFDA!)

Eight out of our 10 favorite Oscar dresses of the past decade have come from designers who show in either Paris and Milan: Valentino (Julia Roberts, 2001; J.Lo, 2003), Elie Saab (Halle Berry, 2003), Gucci (Charlize Theron, 2004), Guy Laroche (Hilary Swank, 2005), Versace (Penélope Cruz, 2007), John Galliano (Freida Pinto, 2009) and Givenchy (Zoe Saldana, 2010). Michelle Williams (Vera Wang, 2006) and Amy Adams (Proenza Schouler, 2008) defied these odds, however, and won big with American talent.

Rule No. 2: Opt for a dress that's had little to no exposure.

One can ensure this by going completely custom, of course, as was the case with Williams, Adams, Cruz and Theron. Another popular approach is to select a gown from the most recent
couture collection (Saldana) or spring-summer offerings (Swank, Pinto), many of which have yet to arrive in stores by the time the Oscars roll around.

Rule No. 3: Look to the past à la Lopez and Roberts, both of whom chose frocks from the storied Valentino archives for classic yet fresh gowns.

Lopez's one-shouldered mint floor-duster had been worn only by Jackie Kennedy, 35 years prior, while Roberts' graphic black-and-white number from 1992 is often pointed to as the dress that helped popularize vintage on the red carpet.

Rule No. 4: Rules are meant to be broken! And we absolutely can't wait to see what this year's ladies have up their sleeves.

Lady Gaga might have thought it was still Halloween when she showed up for the 13th annual ACE Awards at Cipriani in NYC.

The star wore white fishnets over a gray and white splattered menswear shirt. On top of that, a velvety-pink bra and high-waisted short set.

Further, she teased some extensions into a big blonde puff ball, and covered up her face with a black lace headpiece by Erickson Beamon.

The Accessories Council throws the star-studded bash to celebrate achievements in accessory design.

And really, does anyone know how to accessorize quite like Lady Gaga?
