How does Betsey Johnson celebrate her 69th birthday? The cartwheel-turning, hot pink lipstick-wearing designer, best known for her over-the-top party dresses, unveiled a new fragrance, called Too Too.

While dancing to DJ sets by Becka Diamond and Chelsea Leyland and indulging in mimosas and cupcakes at the launch event, we got a whiff of the fruity-floral scent. We've finally recovered, but remain entranced by the fragrance and it's over-the-top packaging.

The perfume is a blend of sweet passion fruit, mandarin, ginger, strawberry leaves, jasmine, patchouli and sandalwood. But there are three aromatic standouts for Johnson.

"The black vanilla is exotic, tasty and strange. The pink musk...it's heavy duty and super sexy. And the Bulgarian rose, my all time favorite," she said. "It really nails the guys love its sexiness trail."

Clearly Johnson's years as a dancer inspired her latest masterpiece, and the bottle's pink and black tutu, fishnet and curvaceous corseted top represent special moments on-stage.

"My costume was almost the same as the bottle when I danced the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Can-Can, and Cabaret," she said.

Too Too ($42-$82) will launch exclusively October 2011 through April 2012 at Sephora before hitting department store and specialty boutique counters in May.

What better time to release a million-dollar perfume then during an economic recession? DKNY's latest venture is an exquisite fragrance bottle carved from 14-karat gold and coated in 2,909 precious stones, including a 7.18-carat sapphire, a 4.03-carat pear-shaped diamond and 3.07-carat ruby. Yikes.

Slightly redeeming is the fact that net proceeds go to Action Against Hunger, a charity that works to fight world hunger. But wouldn't giving the money straight to charity might have been a tad more efficient? The good news is, if you fancy the scent without the bejeweled exterior, the fragrance alone is available at department stores for $42.

Ever since Lady Gaga requested that her fragrance "Monster" would, "smell like blood and semen," we have had our eye and ear on celebrities who design fragrances and make the mistake of talking about them in public. While they might not have any idea what they are talking about, at least they are entertaining. Here are our ten favorite quotes from celebrities with fragrances:

Adriana Lima on "Incredible": "The fragrance was inspired by the bra, which is all about comfort and feeling sexy and also inspired by the fabric, which is very smooth so this fragrance is a fruity, floral fragrance."

A group of very lucky editors (myself included) were invited out to Oscar de la Renta's sprawling estate in Connecticut last week to meet with the designer, discuss the fragrance he's launching this fall and take a personal tour around his expansive gardens. As you can imagine, it was beyond. All of it. From the lunch prepared with heirloom tomatoes and asparagus grown in his own garden to the perfectly manicured hedge mazes to the scent itself -- a green floral blend of muguet, bergamot, ginger orchid, orange flower and sandalwood.

Before I actually smelled the fragrance, I quickly envisioned the type of woman who would wear it: A lady, and a glamorous one, the ODLR dress-wearing type. SJP-esque. In general, someone WAY fancier than me. With the first spritz, my assumptions were right: It was strong and sophisticated. But by the afternoon, the scent had transformed into something incredibly wearable and slightly musky, in an intriguing, subtle way. Like really pretty skin. I know, I know, this phrase gets thrown around a lot in the fragrance world, but here, in this case, I truly mean it.

The name of the scent, called Live In Love, was actually inspired by someone de la Renta's been working with closely for many years. The designer revealed that at one point during the development of his fragrance, he caught sight of a tattoo on the man who's been making his dress samples in New York for the past two decades: Live In Love was inked on his right arm. He knew immediately what he would call his forthcoming fragrance.

This week in Top Notes, we road-tested La Tulipe, a new-ish fragrance from Swedish perfume house, Byredo. While tulips aren't known for being super fragrant, this scent takes on a little more. Ben Gorham, the man behind Byredo, wanted to capture the flower's "shy characteristic" and work that alongside other floral essences. The result is a mash-up of different parts of the tulip as well as hints of freesia, rhubarb and vetiver. Our editors wore La Tulipe for a week -- here's what they really thought:

What were you initial thoughts of the fragrance?
I tried La Tulipe on one of the hottest weekends of the year. The first spritz smells a bit strongly of lilac, even though it's supposed to be tulip. I was a bit worried that it would be too flowery/sweet for such hot weather.

How did the scent evolve throughout the day?
Shortly after putting it on, something very unexpected happened: The fragrance went from lilacs to the scent of a tulip stem. You know how, when you cut into a tulip stem, you smell that great "green", fresh scent? Like aloe vera, but more intense. There were also hints of line-dried laundry. Crisp and warm with the faintest trace of lilac. It was very nice.

After wearing it for a few days, how do you feel about the fragrance now?
It grew on me. Even though I found the immediate lilac notes a bit too intensely floral for my liking, I really loved how it smelled when the other notes (that tulip stem and line-dried laundry scent) developed.

Did it remind you of anything--person, place, memory?
La Tulipe reminded me of the month of May: Lilacs, sun-warmed cotton and new leaves.

What did others think of the way you smelled?
It's funny: The reaction was divided amongst my girl and guy friends. (And, my parents.) All girls loved it, one even calling it a "sundress in a bottle." They really responded to that lilac note (and thought it was a lilac perfume). But guys thought it smelled like detergent or "something medicinal". And my friend Joe said that I smelled like his mother.

Would you consider this scent unique and different from others you've worn in the past?
Definitely. Even though Fracas is one of my favorite scents, I shy away from floral scents. Especially if it's on the sweet side. But the definite unique quality to La Tulipe is that scent transformation from floral to fresh. I've never had a scent transform like that.

What were you initial thoughts of the fragrance?
I thought it was a light, fresh, summery scent that wasn't heavy at all -- just delicate and floral.

How did it compare to other scents you've worn?
I normally wear Balenciaga's fragrance everyday and this felt a little less spicy and was maybe even more appropriate to wear during the day.

Is this a scent that would work for both day and night?
I do, but it's best during the day, for night I'd like something a bit stronger and less sweet.

How did the scent evolve throughout the day?
The scent seemed to stay pretty consistent throughout the day. I did notice -- because it's pretty light -- that it faded just a bit towards the evening.

After wearing it for a few days, how do you feel about the fragrance now?
I really liked it a lot, and as a person who just sticks to one fragrance a season, I think this is the perfect balance of light, floral notes for summer. It's something to wear all day and even into the night.

Did it remind you of anything--person, place, memory?
The smell of my Mom's bathroom and hints of one of the flower shops near my apartment in Chelsea's flower district.

What did others think of the way you smelled?
Everyone seemed to really like it. Several said it was a "pretty" smell and one that was very clean, fresh and light. One friend sprayed some on herself just a tiny bit and she needed to put a bit more on to actually get the full notes of the scent. She also then guessed that it was a Chloe perfume.

Would you consider this scent unique and different from others you've worn in the past?
Yes, because when I've worn floral based scents in the past they've tended to be very sweet and this had a great balance to it. It was just enough for the everyday but still sophisticated enough for night time.

Last week -- appropriately on Bastille Day -- French perfume house Lubin launched Black Jade, a fragrance that was exclusively created for Marie Antoinette. The scent, originally formulated by royal perfumer Jean-Louis Fargeon, was an homage to the queen's rose-filled gardens in Versailles. Antoinette kept a small vial of the fragrance with her at all times, even right up until her death. According to Luca Turin in The Secret of Scent, it was her unmistakable perfume that gave away her disguise as she fled the palace.

Black Jade (a blend of bergamot, cardamom, rose, jasmine, incense, cinnamon, sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla, tonka bean and amber) is now available at Aedes De Venustas in New York.

Celebrity fragrances are where it's at this summer!

Taylor Swift has joined the ranks of Heidi Klum and Jennifer Lopez with the launch of her first signature perfume, Wonderstruck, in partnership with Elizabeth Arden. The scent is set to hit stores this October, but Swift is wasting no time reaching out to her adoring fans.

Wonderstruck's packaging is flooded with intricate details of the singer's unique personality, from the gold embossed 13 on the bottle -- Swift's lucky number -- to handpicked charms. The fragrance was created from a blend of freesia, raspberry, vanilla, honeysuckle and sandalwood -- difficult to picture, but it sounds appropriately girly.

Swift chose to name her perfume after a lyric in her 2011 hit song "Enchanted." The lyric - "I'm wonderstruck, blushing all the way home" is "about the first time you meet someone," she said in a release. "A fragrance can help shape someone's first impression and memory of you. It's exciting to think that Wonderstruck will play a role in creating some of those memories."

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley may be seductively wearing a rose gold satin trench coat in Burberry's latest ad campaign, but she isn't fronting clothes. The 24-year-old "Transformers 3" star nearly bares all to promote a new fragrance perfectly coined, Burberry Body.

"Burberry Body is the most exciting launch that we have ever created and captures the iconic spirit of the brand today in a striking and sensual way," said Christopher Bailey, chief creative officer. "Rosie's effortless style and her staggering beauty made her the natural choice as the first Burberry Body."

Huntington-Whiteley kicks off the British luxury brand's iconic portfolio of "Burberry bodies" photographed by Mario Testino. While details are still hush-hush on what the actual fragrance smells like, we can only imagine that it's as cool and sexy as the ad campaign.

Buberry Body fragrance will debut September 1 in over 150 countries.

With descriptions like "reflective" and "high-pitched" alongside equally hard-to-imagine ingredients like frozen morello cherry and floral woody chypre, fragrance reviews can be... a little hard to grasp. In our new series, Top Notes, our editors will road test new and classic fragrances, and report back what they really thought. This week, we're starting with one of the indie perfume world's most interesting (and slightly unconventional) scents -- Honoré Des Prés I Love Les Carottes.

What were you initial thoughts of the fragrance?
My first reaction was "Oh, I really like this!" and then my second response was "Whoa, this really smells like carrots." I realized that it was mostly because I knew the fragrance was made of carrots that I could smell that scent so strongly. It has a very complex smell - raw and fresh - and I was excited to see how it changed throughout the day.

Did it remind you of anything--person, place, memory?
It reminded me of being in Shelter Island or being somewhere near the beach that still had lots of trees.

How did it compare to other scents you've worn?
I generally wear more floral scents, especially in summer so this had a little more spice to it.

Light enough for muggy NYC summer days?
Absolutely. There is a fruitiness to the perfume that is perfect for summer. It is light, but not too sweet.

How did the scent evolve throughout the day?
Throughout the day the scent lost some of the carrot-ness and blended well with my skin. I applied to my wrists and neck and then I wore it walking around the West Village while it was over 90 degrees. The scent somewhat faded and changed throughout the day, but it was still recognizable. The way it smelled an hour or more after I applied was my favorite.

How did it feel to be... carrot-scented?
The first morning I applied the scent, I asked a male friend what he thought. He said, "You smell like carrots. You smell like carrots and you are wearing an orange dress. You are a carrot." I immediately regretted my wardrobe choice.

What did others think of they you smelled?
One person said that I smelled like a garden (which I thought was pretty accurate) while others merely described the scent as "sweet with a little spice but it kind of reminds me of V8."

Would you continue to wear this scent?
I would, but I would make sure to apply at least 30 minutes before leaving the house so that the carrot-ness had a chance to fade. I think it is great for summer especially as the season transitions to fall.

What were you initial thoughts of the fragrance?
As with eating one's root vegetables, I Love Les Carottes was an acquired taste. I initially thought it was too strong, but by the third day I was a carrot convert.

Jennifer Lopez has the entire world as her stage, but why did the 41-year-old star choose the 24-hour shopping television network, HSN, to exclusively launch her 17th fragrance?

"HSN really gave me a unique opportunity to connect directly with viewers and fans," Lopez told StyleList. "To be able to share my passion, inspiration and the work that went into Love and Light and hearing the callers talk about the other fragrances of mine felt really nice! And of course, Colleen [Lopez] and Diana [Perkovic] made it fun!"

StyleList watched behind-the-scenes as she charmed viewers with stories of perfecting her new scent while sharing a few good laughs, childhood photos and dance moves with the HSN hosts and her mother, Lupe. We caught up with the "Get on the Floor" singer after she wrapped her on-air appearance to chat all things fragrance.

StyleList: Love and Light will be your 17th signature fragrance, what makes this perfume stand out from your previous scents?
Jennifer Lopez: I'm really excited about Love and Light. When I begin creating a new scent, the goal is to make something extraordinary. None of my scents are ever alike. With Love and Light, I wanted to create a unique and very personal fragrance that really expresses the feeling of the warmth and light you feel inside and not focus on the world around you. It also has a very sensual experience to it.

How do you believe your fragrance base has evolved since Glow? Did you ever think that you would become a perfumer?
JL: I never imagined when I launched Glow that fragrance would become such a big part of my life. Each fragrance is a reflection of what I am feeling in my life at that time. This has been a passion of mine since working in a perfume store as a young girl, so it's a dream come true.

What inspires you to create a new perfume? Memory, place or person? And what is the process like from idea to bottle?
JL: I have been inspired by so many things. I remember when I was a little girl, my mom had this very special smell, that was unique to my mom. I loved that! I think everyone should have a smell -- it's like anything else about you and it's a part of you. I love the process of creating beautiful things. I come up with the idea of the scent and design and work with my fragrance partner, Coty Prestige, to make this exactly as we imagined it to be.

What has been your biggest lesson you learned in creating fragrances?
JL: Patience. I never simply put my name on something. When it's finished, I am 100 percent in love with it and I am excited about sharing it. All of my fragrances are a personal extension of myself.

In the fragrance's ad campaign, you evoke the essence of Hollywood screen sirens of the past. Can you talk about the inspiration behind the ad?
JL: I am inspired by iconic legendary women. Women that were pioneers in fashion and fragrance. The Love and Light ad is a tribute to legends like Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Onassis and of course, Coco Chanel. We wanted to capture that chic Hollywood glamour and spirit.

Which of your own fragrances are in heavy rotation?
JL: It's hard to pick just one. Each scent represents a different part of myself. I wear each of them based on how I am feeling at a particular moment or on a particular day. Wearing fragrance should be fun and playful!

Jennifer Lopez is making room in her boudoir for her seventeenth scent (yep, we counted!) called Love and Light.

The 41-year-old singer, actress, fashion designer, producer and "American Idol" host boasts that the new woody floral fragrance is an extension of last year's Love and Glamour, but we're not sure how many more perfume bottles Lopez's dresser can hold.

"I wanted to create a fragrance that was less about the world around you and more about your inner light and your spirit. It's about how you feel inside, it's not about your outside world," she explains.

Love and Light will debut on HSN this Saturday at midnight, noon and 9 p.m. when the bronze beauty makes her first on-air appearance with the multi-channel retailer. But StyleList is giving you a sneak peek of Lopez's Old Hollywood-inspired ad campaign.

You got to hand it to Friends of the High Line, they are slowly (but surely) saving the Meatpacking District from itself. Now with the expansion, there's new art installations and an endless line of the city's best food trucks. The trickle-down effect also includes beauty: the prolific perfumer Bond No. 9 has set up shop on Washington Street, right across from the Standard Hotel. Their new satellite store opens this Saturday, and will offer the company's full line of fragrances, candles, soaps, and, of course, the scent they dedicated to the historic elevated railway -- a super-subtle blend of breezy, grassy, floral-y notes, that couldn't be more spot-on.

Last night in New York, Thierry Mugler launched a new lighter Eau De Toilette version of its classic scent, Angel -- along with the ad campaign which features a singing Eva Mendes. The actress, in a custom Nicola Formichetti dress, along with Rachel Roy, Mickey Boardman, and Naomi Watts (former Angel spokeswoman), among others, viewed the premiere of the commercial which will air this fall. (Watch behind the scenes footage of the making of the song.) We caught up with Mendes beforehand to discuss everything from her thoughts on the new scent to summer beauty essentials to the music she's obsessing over right now.

Angel by Thierry Mugler campaign:

StyleList: Is there a particular singer whose voice/sound you really love? Who inspires you -- singing-wise (past or present)?

EM: Oh sure, all the greats. From Maria Callas to Billie Holiday, there are so many amazing women. To more modern day, like Florence Welch. There's a ton of spectacular women that inspire me. And my mother has a beautiful, beautiful voice.



StyleList: What was it like working with your voice coach for the Mugler campaign? Was there anything you struggled with?

EM: You know what, not really for this. I've been working with him for a few years now, and it's so exciting because I always feel like if you keep your instrument in tune, and ready to go, opportunities will present themselves. So it wasn't like I was working towards a goal, but when I started vocal lessons, I was like, I just want to open myself up and see what's in there. So it was really great to have this amazing opportunity.

StyleList: What songs/bands are you loving right now?

EM: I just started checking out Mumford & Sons, they're pretty cool -- that's kind of my latest. The new Strokes, that's kind of rocking my world on a serious level. I love Mark Ronson, he's always a part of a cool collaboration.

The fragrance:

StyleList: How does it feel to be the face of such an iconic scent?

EM: So exciting. I grew up with the scent. When it came out I was still in school, my sisters were wearing it, my mom was wearing it. Angel was big in our household. So to now be the face of Angel, and to have it be such a beautiful collaborative experience is just amazing. It's been a true partnership, in that sense, and I couldn't be happier with the result.

StyleList: What do you love about the new, lighter Eau De Toilette version of the fragrance?

EM: It's just a little less "octane" in a sense, just more for daytime. It's still as powerful without being as strong, if that makes any sense.

StyleList: Can you tell us about the moment when the direction of the campaign shifted to include you actually singing in the commercial.

EM: When they showed me a rough cut of the commercial, I was so excited about it. They had the original version of the song and they said they wanted to modernize it. I quickly volunteered, I was like, I could modernize it. It just happens to be one of my favorite songs. It was a big moment for me.

Summer beauty routine:

StyleList: Are there certain products that you can't live without this time of year?

EM: I cannot live without Dr. Perricone's No Foundation Foundation. It's a very light tinted moisturizer, you put it on, and you get coverage without feeling foundation-y at all. It has SPF in it, and you feel a little more responsible about going out there, and just being a little more carefree.

StyleList: What are your melt-proof makeup tips for keeping it simple-but pretty-when it feels like a sauna outside?

EM: I love the Thierry Mugler mascara. I also love Laura Mercier, I think she has amazing products. What I tend NOT to do, specifically in the summertime, is cover any shine with powder. I'd rather look a little shiny and look fresh in that way, than trying to cover it. I'm very anti-powder, especially when it's a little humid out. That's when blotting papers are really helpful.

StyleList: Any tricks for keeping your hair healthier in the summer?

EM: I use Pantene all the time, I really do. Whenever I go to the beach or the pool, I just put my hair into a bun and then I get a cute old scarf and wrap it up, so it doesn't start turning auburn. You know, with us brunettes, we tend to go red a little bit, so I just make sure to protect my hair, and I can just feel a little more relaxed, because it does tend to go reddish.

Eva Mendes has been named the new face of the iconic scent, as well as the soon-to-launch, airier Eau De Toilette version available this August. The campaign--which was shot in Prague--features the actress (in a custom Mugler dress) singing with an orchestra. Though this wasn't the initial concept for the commercial: When Mendes was prepping for the shoot she found inspiration by singing along to "The Windmills of Your Mind," the song that was chosen for the campaign. Everyone on set loved it so much they decided to incorporate her singing into the commercial. Mendes will use her voice again when she stars as the famed opera soprano Maria Callas in an upcoming biopic. But singing isn't a newly-acquired talent--if you'll remember back to 1998, she was actually one of the convertible-driving girls in Will Smith's at one time omnipresent "Welcome To Miami" video, chiming in with the occasional "Bienvenido a Miami." While the commercial isn't airing until September, we've got behind the scenes footage.

Heidi Klum Shine Fragrance Ad

You may recognize Heidi Klum as a supermodel, designer, "Project Runway" host, producer, mother and wife, but the 38-year-old German stunner can now add celebrity perfumer to her résumé.

Shine is Klum's first signature fragrance -- an oriental scent made of pink peppercorn, pear and mandarin top notes; a mimosa absolute, sunflower, and lily of the valley heart; and musk cosmone, vanilla and Venezuelan tonka bean drydown.

"There are different moods that as a fragrance creator you can travel to," Klum told WWD. "But for my first one, I wanted what I felt my staple would be. I wanted it to be sensual and feminine, but still luxurious and expensive-smelling - because I think there are so many perfumes out there that smell cheap and too sweet."

The perfume is poured into a gold bottle with a clear, rounded wavy base, and the not too retouched ad campaign features Klum with a glimmer of light reflecting onto her wind-blown, blond strands as she gazes seductively at the camera.

"You can sell a dream, and you can sell a lifestyle that a woman aspires to have, but you can't completely trick her," Klum explained to WWD. "If people retouch me too much, I get upset - yes, you can help me out a little here and there, but don't go overboard. I have one tooth that's longer than another, and if you look at the [Shine] ad my snaggletooth is coming out a little bit - but I like that."

Leighton Meester's new job as the face of Vera Wang fragrance suits her quite well. The "Gossip Girl" darling is positively radiant in a new perfume commercial for Vera Wang Lovestruck.

In the spot, Meester waits on the top of a fire escape -- in an strapless Bordeaux evening gown, obviously -- while the object of her affection climbs to greet her with flowers. Once reunited, the flowers fall to the wayside as they embrace. Ah, romance.

Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, the sparkling floral fragrance is a sensual blend of pink guava, angelica blossom, tuberose and sheer musk.

Meester shot the perfume commercial last November in New York City as part of her two-year, $3 million contract with the luxury label, Just Jared reports.

"When I heard tourists saying, 'I want to look like her,' I knew we were right on the money," Wang told WWD (via Just Jared). "There's nothing like the real client in the street, and I mean the street literally -- and in windows literally."

It's a fun, romantic way to showcase Vera Wang Lovestruck and Meester, and we're sure there will be even more suitors trying to climb their way in to her heart soon.

Baby, baby, baby, oh! Marc Jacobs has opened up about Justin Bieber's Someday fragrance bottle and its striking similarity to Lola.

When Bieber recently unveiled his first women's scent, the fruity floral notes weren't the only thing that had editors, bloggers and fragrance fanatics intrigued. The teen heartthrob's perfume bottle instantly drew comparisons to Jacobs' Lola, particularly its exaggerated petal-shaped top.

WWD's Bridget Foley sat down with the designer, who will receive the CFDA's Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award next week, and asked Jacobs about the likeness.
