Why it's so great: This is my choice for sunscreen because it has a high SPF and it's ultra-fine mist never feels greasy. But here's what else it can do: it keeps my blond dyed hair from fading. <em>Seriously</em>. It's like a sunhat in a can!</p>" href="/photos/our-favorite-drugstore-summer-beauty-buys/4303404/" data-photo-src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.stylelist.com/media/2011/07/banana-boat-kids-sunscreen-spray620do071811.jpg" data-credit="Drugstore.com">Banana Boat Kids UltraMist Continuous Spray Sunscreen

Chapstick Strawberry Lip Balm

Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two, Deep Cleansing

Essie Silver Bullions

L'Oreal Stars Collection Infallible Lip Color in Beyonce's Red

<a title="<p>

Why it's so great: When I'm in between waxing appointments, I reach for this to get rid of stubble. There's not too many things in this world that can rile a woman up like a negative comment on her hair. Oprah Winfrey's hairstylist Andre Walker is facing heat beyond the hot comb for his statements from a recent Elle interview where he discussed the styling and care of kinky hair (read: highly-textured, curly strands).

In the article, Walker encourages loving what you've got on top, but then goes on to say, "Kinky hair can have limited styling options; that's the only hair type that I suggest altering with professional relaxing."

Say what?

I wasn't the only natural hair rocking young woman who was taken aback by the professional's statement, especially since Walker has a curly coif himself. As Jezebel Senior Editor Dodai Stewart reported, readers took to Elle.com's comments section to unleash their thoughts.

One commenter wrote:
"I, too, was offended with the statement on natural hair. When I stopped wrestling with my daughter's kinks, a whole new world of styling options opened up to us. It wasn't about making ponytails in different sections and putting on new barrettes. Now she wears an afro, frohawk, twists, straw curls, etc. and we're both much happier. Mr. Walker just went down a notch in my eyes."

Another upset reader revealed:
"I personally do not find that it limits my styling options in the least nor is it any more difficult to manage than any other texture of hair once one is properly educated. *SMH* Maybe Oprah would have embraced her natural hair texture had she had a more open minded stylist."

Walker shortly after took to his blog to clarify his perspective on kinky hair writing:
"When it comes to curly and kinky hair (there is a difference), I leave the political correctness of "going straight" or staying natural to a woman's personal preference. Once again, my advice is based on how to best achieve strong, healthy hair. So for those who would like to engage me in a debate about who has more racial pride and self esteem, based on hairstyle preference and use or non-use of chemical relaxers, know that I believe in personal freedom, and in the use of advanced technology when it yields positive results, which many of today's (versus yesterday's) chemical relaxers do deliver."

As the mane man to a media mogul (whose hair is not naturally straight) and with a plethora of natural hair bloggers like Patrice of Afrobella.com, Mae of NaturalChica.com and the curly-haired duo, Michelle and Gretchen, behind NaturallyCurly.com enlightening us with their tress-formation, you'd think Walker would have enough knowledge to make it clear to Elle that the possibilities of styling kinky hair are indeed limitless and that you aren't bound to short, unhealthy strands because this hair type tends to break easily.

What do you think about the kinky hair "debate"? Do you agree or disagree with Walker's statements?
"Honey is rather glamorous... it's our liquid gold," says Gretta Monahan, founder of Grettacole salon and spa boutique.
Now, I'm talking holy grail status.

From low to high end, some of beauty's best brands are launching products that will not only make your grooming time more effective, but will prove worthy of the hard-earned bucks you spend on them.

From a new spray that helps capture those precious extra Z's in lieu of washing hair every morning (yes, even in this heat!), to a fully absorbent high sunscreen that won't have you sliding off your seat, these latest and greatest picks truly double as time and hassle savers.
Summer Beauty Game Changers

Summer may be sultry, but who has the time to wash hair every time you sweat? While I've always been a dry shampoo lover, Oribe's version takes it a step further by absorbing scalp oils with a patented blend of polymers that adds Texas-style texture and volume to roots, in addition to the line's signature feminine floral scent. You can literally spray and build up for days, giving that quick ponytail or chignon bun sexy texture and height that would do RuPaul proud.

I had long heard about the Clarisonic craze, yet admit to feeling flummoxed that anyone would drop over $100 on what I figured was just a rotating brush. Oh, but how I have fallen to the dark side. The new deep pore brush gently exfoliates my large pores and oil-prone skin, buffing away even the post-retinol flakes that often annoyingly snag my makeup. All that's left is a smooth surface that glows. This one is worth the bite in the wallet -- but get the smaller Mia size, which performs exactly like the Classic -- and which saves you about $50.

When I'm lucky enough to sneak a day on the beach, my lips are a crackly, dry mess by mid-day. Enter Lanolips, which combines over 60 percent medical grade lanolin oil and Vitamin E with sunscreen protection and pure pigment. I'm loving Rose for a non-tacky, rich moisturizing treatment that doesn't contain any of those weird and addictive lip ingredients. This is the only balm I've tried that stayed plush under sun rays, without thinning or turning into a caked-on spackle that settles into lip lines.

 Summer Beauty Game Changers

Refreshing highlights and color during the summer can feel like you're throwing money out the window, with the way the sun changes your hue anyway. Yet Oprah's personal stylist of over 25 years, Andre Walker, showed me that a touch of his new mica-infused color wand could adeptly disguise my regrowth. I honestly doubted it would look natural, but the golden shade completely concealed my jet black roots. The formula takes only three minutes to dry, lasts until your next shampoo, and comes with a sponge tip applicator for deep coverage, or a mascara-like comb for a softer highlight effect. It just might be Labor Day before I see my colorist again!

While new FDA regulations mean that this sunscreen will no longer be able to claim an SPF higher than 50 next year, the full spectrum formula is nonetheless a winner with the SPF trifecta it achieves: instant absorption for no grease, an easy spray applicator and a scent that doesn't scream 'sunscreen'! After spraying this all over like a mad woman at the beach, I was thrilled that the only thing left behind was sun protection -- and none of that stinky, oily slime that you can otherwise only get off with a shower.

 Summer Beauty Game Changers

Am I the only woman who wears mascara to the beach? For my fellow lash sisters in crime, you'll be thrilled to hear that CoverGirl has substituted a smidge of beeswax in place of heavy synthetics in this formula, and whipped it up into a light mousse texture. Now, this isn't going to give you Diorshow drama, but it will give you a fluttery, full and defined fringe without the embarrassing raccoon eye-like smudges and flakes that a day under the hot sun can bring. Finally!

Simple, mild and gentle sums up my philosophy on cleansing, and I've never seen the need to get fancy with something that you're only going to wash off. But from the creator of cult skin care brand Philosophy comes this new line of dermatologist-sold products, MyBody. The cleanser -- which I put on my Clarisonic -- uses antibacterial lauric acid blended with skin soothers like aloe vera, coconut and lime juice for an uplifting cleansing that transports me to a high-end spa every morning with its luxe scent. A girl can dream, after all.

In the dredge of humidity, not only does the t-zone get shiny, but eyelids can oil up and instantly smear together shadow, liner and mascara you're wearing. My solution before had been to double up on lid base and then layer on powder shadow, but Bare Escentuals simplifies the whole dog and pony show. Launching in July, these waterproof bases are all you need to swipe across the lid for long-wearing hold. I'm all about the light-reflective gunmetal shade, for an instantly sexy smoky eye that would be otherwise impossible to pull off in the depths of July.

Yes, I know the price is a jaw-dropper -- but if you're ever going to clunk down more than $100 for an eye cream (and please, do it during a shopping promotion when you can walk away with some free loot), this latest beauty from Hollywood's top esthetician is the one to blow the bank on. The Neiman's exclusive launches in August, and power punches peptides, caffeine and blackberry leaf extract to target puffiness, wrinkles and sagging. Color correcting pearls instantly help with dark circles, which this olive-toned girl deeply appreciates.

 Summer Beauty Game Changers

Increased oil production mixed with sweat and heat can damper summer days with pore-clogging breakouts. Instead of obsessively blotting trouble away with sheets, I slap on this surprisingly non-stinky 10% sulfur mask twice a week to suck up excess oils and spread anti-bacterial relief deep into pores. If your hot weather breakouts always occur in the same area -- like along your hairline or chin -- you can apply the mask in only those prone areas to make that tube last and last.

Minka Kelly was spotted riding the wave at Salvatore Ferragamo's Women's Resort Collection show in New York City yesterday. Her full-bodied, brunette strands flowed freely onto her LBD and paired well with a sun-kissed glow.

Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend perfected Kelly's ultra-luxe look. Read on for his step-by-step instructions to get this wavy style at home.

Apply a few drops of Dove Nourishing Oil Care Serum on damp hair to hydrate and smooth. Then work Dove Body and Lift Mousse throughout before blow drying with hands.

Once hair is dry, take three inch sections of your hair and spray it with Dove Flexible Hold Hairspray. Wrap strands around a 1 and a half-inch curling iron to create sexy waves. Then liberally spritz on a dry texture spray (flip head upside down to reach underneath), giving hair a great second-day feel.

Finish with Dove Extra Hold Hairspray to keep waves in place.

The ballerina bun is a classic style because it is effortless and shows off the natural beauty of a woman, according to TRESemmé celebrity stylist Jeanie Syfu.

But we can't help but wonder if "Black Swan" influenced the hairstyles seen on the Spring 2011 runways of Sophie Théallet, Rebecca Taylor, Adam and Tadashi Shoji, or if stars like Diane Kruger, Kirsten Dunst and Jennifer Lopez wanted to put their spin on Natalie Portman's bold bun.

Syfu admits that she hasn't noticed an upsurge in celebrities sporting knots since the ballet thriller hit theaters, however she does believe that the style has transformed over the decades. "There are many different versions -- messy, to the side, top of the head, with a pompadour or sleek. But it also has a lot to do with how styling products have evolved from the '50s and '60s when buns were over-styled and stiff."

So what's this pro's trick to perfecting a ballerina bun? Her secret lies in the setup.

"Before putting your hair up, always work some type of styling product in to create a strong foundation so your bun doesn't lose its structure. I find blow drying the hair in the direction of where you want the bun to sit allows for more control, whether it be a messy bun done with your fingers or a sleek bun using a flat boar bristle brush," says Syfu. "When gathering the hair into an elastic, make sure to keep your head upright to avoid a sagging bun at the nape of your neck."

Syfu's final words of advice: make the look personal.

"There's no right or wrong way to style it for day and night," she adds. "I would keep in mind what you are wearing and since this hairstyle is putting attention to your face, try to emphasize one feature like a pretty lip, groomed strong eyebrows, lightly contoured cheekbones or a sultry, smoky eye."
Every year, Father's Day gift guides seem to go something like this: colorful tie, golf tee, high-tech electric razor. It's not often we think out of the box when it comes to spoiling our dads, so on June 19 we suggest you give him something slightly more stylish.

A trip to the barber shop just might do the trick, and make your old man feel like a million bucks to boot. With hundreds of throw-back barbers popping up all over the country, a true close shave with an old-school vibe isn't hard to come by these days.
Rarely does one beloved beauty secret cross the breadth of so many centuries, countries, cultures and ethnicities as the use of oil on hair.

With effects that run the gamut from conditioning and adding shine to treating dandruff and stimulating strand growth, oils are truly the workhorse of hair care products.

While the nutrient-rich substance fell out of favor in recent times in part due to a general lack of knowledge of how to use it without weighing down hair, oils are now enjoying a popular resurgence as the rise of the green beauty category brings the ancient treatment back to the spotlight.

"Oils are not only incredibly beneficial to all hair types, but they have a ritualistic quality to them that many find spiritually soothing," says Horst Rechelbacher, founder of both Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients, a certified organic beauty line that is entirely based on plant ingredients.

Two oils of the moment -- argan and monoi -- are the current 'it' girls of the industry, attracting attention and fame, and dedicated legions of fans. Argan oil is the star ingredient of the ubiquitous Moroccanoil brand, and monoi takes center stage in a new line launching by Carol's Daughter.

"The romance of monoi is what hooked me first, its tradition and the process by which it is made. The second thing was its scent," says Carol's Daughter founder Lisa Price, of the oil that is created by soaking Tahitian gardenias in coconut oil. "The goal became, 'How do we prepare this so that we can marry the ancient tradition with modern-day efficacy?'"

But before you dive into the healthy hair benefits of oil, it's vital that you know how to apply it in the right way to best benefit your hair. Our tips and tricks below cover all textures and types -- and even the most baby-fine heads of hair.

Know the three types of cosmetic oils and their weight. Fatty oils like castor and shea butter have large molecular weight and sit on the surface of hair, while semi-fatty oils like sweet almond, avocado and sunflower are absorbed more readily, and work for most hair types. Dry oils like grape seed, coconut and evening primrose are the lightest, and seemingly disappear into the hair without any residue on even fine textures, says natural beauty expert Julie Gabriel, who will publish Oleotherapy: Reveal the Powerful Rejuvenation Benefits of 100 Oils for your Health, Beauty and Wellbeing in November 2011.

Always massage oil into the scalp. The most common mistake people make is that they apply oil to the ends of hair only. "Oils help regulate sebum production in the scalp much in the same way that face oils are helpful to normalize sebum production in the skin," says Gabriel. Fine hair can apply oil only to the scalp, while medium to thick types can also apply the oil to the mid-shaft and down. Coarse types can massage the oil from the scalp all the way to the ends.

The goof-proof choice for any hair type is jojoba oil. A plant that is indigenous to the southwest, jojoba is the lightest of all cosmetic oils, and absorbs weightlessly. If you have super-fine hair, you can even look for clarified jojoba, which takes it even a step lighter. "Jojoba is a liquid wax, and you can clarify it and take some of the wax out of it to make it even lighter than it already is," says Rechelbacher.

Argan oil is best for medium to thick hair. While everyone is reaching for argan these days, Rechelbacher says that the exotically fragrant oil is more suited to thicker heads of hair. "Argan is sticky, and can be hard to get out of fine hair. It's like olive oil -- you'll need to shampoo two or three times to fully rinse it out, or else you'll get build-up." Yet for richer locks, argan can strike the perfect balance of shine, scent and manageability.

To get the benefits without any weight, apply oil to dry hair. If you don't want to keep oil in your hair, try this treatment recommended by Rechelbacher. On completely dry hair, first work oil into the ends, and then slowly massage into the scalp, deeply inhaling the aromatic experience for relaxation. Gently brush hair from scalp to ends for five minutes, and allow the oil to sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Then hop in the shower and wash it out. "In most cases, you won't even have to follow up with a conditioner unless you're very coarse. Your hair will feel like silk," says Rechelbacher.

Castor oil is a natural growth treatment. Castor oil is believed to stimulate and strengthen hair growth, but Gabriel says that it's too heavy to use on hair. Instead, you can apply the vegetable oil with a Q-tip to sparse eyebrows and lashes at bedtime to encourage thicker, healthier and faster growth. Think of it as nature's Latisse.

Warm oil is a fix-it for scalp problems. Since putting oil on the scalp encourages the skin to rebalance itself, adding warmth will also allow nutrients to penetrate more deeply. Gabriel says that massaging your choice of oil into the scalp is helpful for dry dandruff, non-hormonal hair loss and itchy scalps. Simply nuke a small amount of oil in the microwave, and then enjoy a soothing fingertip massage in small circles around the scalp.

How often you should use oil depends on how often you wash. Fine and oily hair types that wash daily, or close to that, can consider using an deep oil treatment weekly. Textured and coarse hair types that wash weekly or bi-weekly will likely enjoy the best results with an oil treatment applied once a month. The risk of applying oil too often is that it will build up in the scalp and weigh hair down, unless it has been shampooed sufficiently between applications.

Beware of cheapened oils. Manufacturers are notorious for flooding products with silicones and petrochemicals, and including only minute amounts of oil, says Gabriel. Be sure to read ingredient labels to confirm that you're getting the real deal -- which should be a listing of various oils. Rechelbacher and other vetted natural experts often use essential oils in their mixes, as it's a more hygienic choice that diminishes the chance of bacteria growth. The addition of seeds and antioxidants is an indication of top-notch blending that will allow the oils to perform even better.

If pregnant, don't use nut oils. Oils derived from nuts like peanuts and pine nuts can be potentially hazardous to pregnant women. "Oils from nuts go rancid the quickest, and you don't want to apply rancid oil if you're pregnant. If in doubt, smell it. If it doesn't smell right or is off, don't use it," says Rechelbacher.

It's clear that oils are well worth the effort -- but can the same be said for the clampless curling irons that are all the rage right now? StyleList investigates.
Why You Should Use Oil In Your Hair originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 14:00:00 EST. Hair trends may fly in and out of style in seconds, but hair tools tend to have longevity.

Chances are, that first flat iron you fried your hair with in your teenage search for shampoo commercial shine and sleekness doesn't look too different from the flat iron currently cord-wrapped and stored in your bathroom cabinet.

Yet a new tool has seemingly taken over the industry in recent months: the clampless conical curling iron. From blogs to fashion glossies and the shelf at the local beauty supply store, these baton-like wands are everywhere you look.

But I wondered: Are conical curlers just marketing hype, or do they really perform that much differently from traditional curling irons? And is it worth buying one if you already have a curling iron at home?

After picking up the Sedu Revolution Professional Clipless Curling Iron and feeling more like I was about to engage in a medieval joust than curl my hair, I decided to ask some leading stylists for tips on how to put this curious new tool to the test.

Basically, it all comes down to what look you want to achieve. Clipless curling irons make softer, beachy waves a cinch, while a traditional iron is going to more easily give you a defined, ringlet type of curl.

I photographed my different looks, which I think show the textural difference in results from the two types of irons. However, I want to make it clear that I'm not a professional stylist, but merely just another girl who is trying to coax my hair to do things it doesn't naturally do -- and the photos are my first attempts.

So, just how do you use these things, and what are some tips and tricks to leaping over the learning curve, and instantly rocking results like a pro? Read on to find out -- and be sure not to miss our stylists' secret tricks to turning your traditional iron into a clipless version for free.

Practice with the iron unplugged first. The most damaging aspect of hair tools is not the heat itself, but the cumulative effect of passing a hot iron through the same strands multiple times. Practice your movements on a cold barrel first, so that you get the hang of how to hold the tool and wrap the hair before you're actually working with heat, advises stylist Adam Campbell of LA's Prive Salon.

Point down and wrap. The key move is to hold the clampless iron vertically, facing down. Then wrap a small section of hair around the base, and continue to wrap outwards to the tip. Don't wrap the hair over and on top of itself; make sure every part touches the iron, including the ends. Hold for five seconds, and release. "The main benefit of using a clampless curling iron is to produce a perfect curl from roots to ends without 'fish hooks,' which are those unattractive kinky, frizzy ends that a traditional curling iron can produce," says Amy Ambramite, creative director at Chicago's Maxine Salon.

A protective glove is included for a reason. Chalk it up to my impatience with reading directions -- I first decided to embark on this experiment without taking the time to put on the heat glove that accompanied my Sedu iron. Bad, bad idea. After my fourth or fifth crazy woman cuss, I finally surrendered and put the glove on. Wow! Now that I was no longer burning my hand off, wrapping a section around the iron and holding it in place to set was as easy as pie. If purchasing a clampless curler, check to make sure it comes with that essential heat resistant glove. Not all models do.

Become ambidextrous. I always hold my hair dryer with my dominant right hand. After stubbornly trying to do the same with the clipless iron because I didn't want to swap the glove (since, you know, it takes so long to switch hands), I finally acquiesced to the fact that this is one tool that requires a switch up. Fortunately, the styling motion requires minimal dexterity. Simply hold the iron with the hand that corresponds with each side, and do the wrapping work with the opposite hand. I found that it's well worth the effort, as you'll hit that quality wave on the first try using this method.

Size and grasp determine wave. For subtle and free-flowing beach waves, use longer sections -- about two to three inches -- and wrap slightly loose around the barrel. For a more pronounced wave and richer texture, use a smaller one inch section, and wrap the hair a bit more tightly around the iron, instructs Adrian Castillo of LA's Sally Hershberger salon.

Now, beachy waves were certainly not invented with the advent of the clipless iron; stylists have long achieved the look with traditional curling irons, too.

If purchasing a clipless iron isn't in your budget right now, you can still use some savvy stylist tricks to get the same look with a traditional curling iron that you may already have.

Simply keep the clamp on your iron down, and wrap the hair around the closed barrel as you normally would with a clampless version, says Campbell. Just be careful to keep the wrap looser, or else you'll end up with the indents of the clamp in your hair.

You can alternately try opening the clamp, and winding your section around the barrel, without closing the clamp, suggests Castillo. It's a little tricky to start, but you'll get the hang of it with some practice, and it's a helpful option to consider if caught in a pinch without a conical iron.

Lastly, Abramite says you can even transform a curling iron that you're no longer using into the new generation version. "Save yourself some cash, and create your own clampless curling iron by removing the clamp on a traditional iron with a screwdriver!" says Abramite.

This stylist speaks my language.

But if you want the convenience and instant ease of the new clampless curling irons, excellent options are available at all price points.

If you're looking to invest, the $120 Sedu Revolution one inch barrel version that I used in the pictured photo features ceramic heat technology, adjustable heat settings and a polished barrel that gave me the glossiest and softest waves of all the irons I tried.

For a bargain buy, Infiniti by Conair You Curl can be found online from anywhere from $29 to $39, and also has ceramic technology and a graduated conical shape that gives waves a more natural looking texture and form. Another competitive buy is the $29.99 Remington T-Studio Ceramic Pearl Professional Curling Wand, which is adorably designed in a frosty shade of pink to boot.

(Note: the traditional curling iron photo was taken after use with the $29.95 Cricket Friction Free Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron.)

With all these options to choose from, beach waves no longer need be the exclusive domain of Victoria's Secret models. Sexy is yours to have, too!
Like a three year-old made to sit through church service without a nap, my hair throws a fist-flying tantrum come the heat and humidity of summertime.

Defiant, willful and with a mind entirely of its own, my hair will do as it damn well pleases. And just about every woman out there with hair on her head knows how this tune goes, having likely fought that kicking and screaming child inside of her own mane on one of hot summer days.

Fortunately, New York's Mark Garrison, owner of the Mark Garrison Salon, and Chicago's Amy Abramite, creative and educational director of Maxine Salon, have some clever dos and don'ts that will have us all sporting our best summer locks ever.

So ready to finally call a time-out with your hair? Read on for tips on how to make the truce.

Do go sulfate-free. People tend to wash their hair more during the hot summer months, but the heavy detergents in most shampoos can dry out strands, a problem that is then exacerbated by the frying effects of a hot sun. Using a sulfate-free shampoo is a gentler option, or you can try this recipe with products you already have at home. "My DIY cocktail is to combine three parts conditioner to one part normal shampoo. The added conditioners will diminish the power of the shampoo, which is likened to what a sulfate-free shampoo does. This is especially great for dry, colored and frizzy hair, but may be too heavy for fine and thin hair," says Garrison.

Don't color your hair before a beach vacation. Dropping big bucks at the salon or spending valuable time at home touching up color is a waste of your resources, as UV rays will likely change your color, warns Abramite. The dryness caused by something like a fresh highlighting job may also be intensified by the harsh rays of the sun. So clip it up and just enjoy yourself -- the glow you'll have from relaxing on vacation sure beats out a new color job, anyway!

Do rock the ombre trend if you want color. "Ombre hair color is still all the rage, and will continue to trend into summer," says Garrison of the gradual dark-that-fades-to-light color technique. "Girls with color-treated hair can easily wear baseball caps in the summer to protect their roots, while pulling their pony through the back of the hat, letting the sun hit the ends of the hair, and oxidizing the color. You'll have ombre in no time!" adds Garrison.

Do carry dry shampoo. It happens to the best of us -- you get caught in an elevator, bus or store with no air conditioning, and suddenly your hair is flat and greasy with perspiration. Gross! "If you're on the go, refresh and cleanse your style with dry shampoo," advises Abramite. Aim the can about a foot away from the scalp, and spray in 1-inch sections that go against the grain of hair growth. Allow to absorb for a couple of minutes, and then brush out any remaining powder. Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo is a new launch for the drugstore market, and Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray is a prestige option that doubles as a styling aid that adds body.

Don't cut bangs on curly hair. During the most humid summer months, it's a good idea to refrain from cutting bangs on curly and coarse hair types. "The 'boing' -- or shrink up factor -- is just too great!" warns Garrison. Instead, curly hair types should keep bangs longer during this time of year, to both look sleeker and save your sanity. When the heat hits, you can sweep longer bangs out of your way, and fasten with a pretty pin for a neat and polished look.

Do blow dry hair plagued by pouf. "Clients say they blow-dry their hair in the morning, and the second they step out the door, they can feel the frizz creeping back in. They say they can actually feel their hair growing larger with every passing minute!" shares Abramite. Oh yes, you bet we can relate to that. Abramite says the cause of the pouf monster is lingering moisture hiding out in the hair. A strong blast with a hair dryer will push frizz out and bring smoothness back. For hair tools that are truly small and light enough to carry along on the go, I've been loving Cricket's hair dryer and mini flat iron.

Do use hair conditioner as a styling product. Manes of thick waves and curls can retain definition without getting crunchy by using this recipe. "The ideal concoction is a mixture of gel and hair conditioner or mask," says Garrison. Swirl the blend into the palm of your hand, and then apply to wet hair and allow it to dry naturally. "The gel gives curls hold, while the mask retains flexibility," explains Garrison. You can finger curl strands around the face and top of your head for more definition as you apply the product.

Don't think head scarves are dowdy. If you have a wedding or other special occasion coming up that requires hair perfection, go Jackie O with a touch of sensible French chic to protect strands from the damaging effects of the sun. "I love hair pulled into a chignon and wrapped with a colorful scarf," says Garrison. The elegant combination will ensure that UV rays don't mess with the shade and finish of your hair, and you'll look stylish while keeping cool to boot.

Do learn how to style a polished pony. "Too often, I see ponytails that are thrown up hastily with no care. A ponytail worn to work should not look like the ponytail you wear to the gym," says Abramite. For a pony that means business, take the time to brush hair back smooth with a natural boar bristle brush to eliminate bumps. Secure at the point of the head where you want your pony to flow from using an elastic or bungee -- the latter of which is a popular fashion week hair tool -- and can be purchased according to your hair color at Rickys NYC or your local beauty supply shop. Control flyaways with a touch of pomade smoothed over with your palms. Optional: Add a headband to keep strands in place if frizz is an issue.

Do wash your hair at night. If you don't want to fight your strands all summer long and instead want to work with the beautiful texture nature gave you, the secret is to wash at night. Shampoo and condition before bed, and allow locks to air-dry overnight, so that you don't have to get sweaty while brandishing a blowdryer in the morning. Upon waking, use a sea mineral spray and scrunch hair to accentuate waves and bring out texture. Spritz a shine spray for a polished look, and you're good to go. If you want a gently styled look, you can run a flat iron or curling barrel on just the ends for smoothness.

What woman doesn't want shampoo commercial hair?

But if you've ever set foot in a salon looking to channel the shine of Demi Moore, the sexy splices of Jennifer Aniston, or the fabulous curls of Diana Ross, you know just how fast those services and products can add up.

And if you live in a high cost of living city like San Francisco, Boston, or my increasingly painful choice -- New York -- that sticker shock can even rival a rent or mortgage payment.

Lucky for us, there's one saving grace about hair: the less-is-more approach usually wins. The less you fuss and fight, the healthier and happier your hair tends to be. (Yes, Mom was right.)

I asked top stylists from both coasts for their best money-saving tips on cutting bucks from your beauty budget. From color to cut and care, the only thing you have to shed are costs.

Let's say a Hallelujah to that!
Use a ceramic metal round brush. Hardly anyone wants to spend more time doing their hair, and using a ceramic metal round brush can help cut time and cost down. When blow-drying, the metal heats up, drying your hair faster and adding more shine. Because the brush emanates heat, you can style loose curls with the brush and your blowdryer -- eliminating the need for those $40 hot roller sets and curling irons, says stylist Maria de LosAngèles of New York's Valery Joseph Salon.

Emulsify. Many women swear by their favorite high-end shampoos and conditioners, but you can make those bottles last longer with just one simple step in the shower. Squeeze a small dollop into the palm of the hand, and then take several seconds to rub hands to emulsify the product into a rich lather. Because professional products are often highly concentrated, that smidge of product will grow into much more bang for your buck, says stylist Natasha Sunshine of LA's The Byu-Ti Salon.

Don't wash before styling an updo. "The trick to an at-home updo is dirty hair. Hair is more moldable like clay on the second day," says de LosAngèles. That means you won't be spraying your way through cans of hair spray and other styling products, in an attempt to tame wisps and colicky strands. For most, just one solid finishing spritz of spray and handy bobby pins are all that's needed after styling an updo into day-old hair.

Try balayage highlights. If you want to lighten your locks with highlights for summer, try the more authentic-looking version called balayage, which has been popularized by celebrities like Gisele Bündchen. "Balayage is sexy, subtle and requires little to no upkeep," says de LosAngèles of the technique, which places color casually through the hair in a pattern that more naturally reflects lightening after sun exposure.

A salon splurge is still frugal, since you won't have to touch up for months, instead of the usual four to six weeks. If doing it at home, buy a highlighting kit that is a couple shades lighter than your natural color. Begin color about a quarter of an inch away from your root for a more authentic look, with casually sectioned strands that vary placement, and go from thin at the root to gradually fuller at the ends.

Cover the part line. For those who wish to cover grays, regrowth can seem like a perpetual battle. You can temporarily mask the appearance of grays with a hair dye pen like ColorMark, or speak to your stylist about partial color visits. "Have your colorist just cover your part area line, every other time. You'll pay about half the cost for this service," says Sunshine. Want a 100 percent cost savings? Embrace those grays, and become a silver fox.

Bangs are cheaper than Botox. If you're bothered by pigmentation or wrinkles on your forehead, a wispy set of bangs will cleverly conceal and bring attention to your eyes, says de LosAngèles. Opt for a sheer set that slowly elongates in length as you move horizontally across the forehead, for an instant face-lifting effect that can take more years off than even a full weave of highlights. Those bangs may have cost you a few bucks to trim, but the laser and wrinkle treatments start in the hundreds.

Take advantage of student nights. Many salons and hair schools across the country offer steeply discounted services, so that their students can gain experience. To ensure you get work that's well worth it, be sure to ask if the student is supervised by a master stylist, who will check the work once completed. Search online for student hair services in your town, or look to a salon like Bumble & Bumble or Sassoon, where the culture is deeply steeped in student training. Expect to save 50 to 75 percent off the regular price of services. Cha-ching!

Make your own Keratin treatment. The hot buzzword for all things hair at the moment, Keratin, is a protein that forms the foundation of the hair strand. You can enjoy the health results without the dangerous synthetics by fusing protein-rich foods into the hair. Try a blend of two tablespoons mayonnaise, 1 whole avocado, 1 tablespoon coconut oil and one tablespoon olive oil, and leave on for 20 minutes, advises de LosAngèles. If mayo grosses you out, apply jojoba or argan oil to freshly washed hair overnight, and wash out in the morning for a similar effect. Keratin treatments otherwise run from $300 upwards, and come with potentially hazardous chemical risks.

From açai to goji berry, nature's greatest superfoods have permeated the beauty industry in recent years, thanks to their skin-beautifying antioxidant powers.

And now, there's a new hero to add to the list: sea buckthorn.

With the precious juice of the yellow to sunburst-red berries finding its way into a variety of beauty products, the fabled history of the citrus fruit dates back millennia.

"Legend has it, that the 13th-century Mongolian conqueror Genghis Khan's soldiers were very close with their horses, so that when a horse was injured in battle, instead of killing it, the soldier would leave the horse behind to die a peaceful death," explains nutritionist Dr. Lindsey Duncan.

"When Genghis Khan and his army returned to the same battlefield a year later, the soldiers were shocked to see their horses alive and well, with shiny coats of thick, beautiful manes. The horses had healed their wounds by eating the sea buckthorn berries that grew naturally in the area," adds Duncan.

From then on, Genghis Khan, his army and horses all consumed a diet rich in sea buckthorn berries, to maintain energy, boost immunity and speed up skin regeneration and healing of battle wounds.

Now, we realize you're likely not preparing to fight in Armageddon today.

But the benefits of sea buckthorn also transfer off the battlefield in powerful ways. Vitamins A, B1, B2, K, E and 10 times the vitamin C of oranges all come together in the small yet potent berries of the shrub to pack a powerful anti-aging punch.

"It's the perfect omega-fat ratio that makes them one of the world's original cosmetics," says Duncan, whose Genesis Today line includes a pure liquid supplement of the superfood. "Sea buckthorn is bursting with omegas-3, 6 and 9, and the very rare omega-7, which supports collagen production and helps maintain skin's moisture and youthful appearance."

Most of us go about blow-drying our hair with the same excitement we reserve for teeth cleanings and tax filings.

But aching wrists and frizz frustration don't have to be your drying destiny. Chances are, you're likely just making one or more of the most common blow-drying mistakes.

That's what New York-based beauty expert Eva Scrivo reveals in her new book, Eva Scrivo On Beauty. Just as handy with a makeup brush as she is with a pair of stylist shears or a head of highlights, Scrivo has counted famous faces among those who trek to her downtown Bond Street salon.

With all of that A-list appeal, we were surprised to find that Scrivo's advice is of the chill out variety. The expert says issues typically arise when women try too hard. (Now that's some advice that goes well beyond the hairdressing, ladies.)

Are you committing one of these most common mistakes?

1. Not Sectioning Hair First. Flipping your head over and blow-drying until you get dizzy, feel light-headed -- or both -- isn't going to help your cause. Keep a claw clip or duckbill clips near your blow dryer, so that you can easily section hair into the bare minimum of three horizontal sections as you dry.

2. Standing Up As You Blow-Dry. "One of the best pieces of blow-drying advice I can give is to have a seat. You will not believe the difference this makes," says Scrivo. When you're comfortably seated, you can fully harness that upper-body strength without getting tired. Plus, it always helps to steal those precious rejuvenative moments for yourself, wherever you can during the day.

3. Holding The Brush In The Wrong Hand. Many women lift the hairdryer with their dominant hand, while working the brush with the weaker one. You'll get better results by instead holding the brush with your stronger hand, as you'll need the improved dexterity to get the job done in less time. "Even many professional hairdressers learn this incorrectly," says Scrivo. Well, now you can style with even more finesse than them.

4. Overtwisting The Brush. When you brush that first stroke into a section of hair, you don't want to go it more than a quarter turn, which is just enough to give it some smoothing tension without risking snarl. After you pull the brush away from the scalp to the midpoint of strand length, then you can safely start twisting the brush to create shape and curl while under the pointed jet stream of your blow dryer. This is where the magic happens!

5. Pulling The Hair Downward At The Crown. The natural inclination is to pull your brush downward, but that will only give you flat results. That just won't do if you want a roaring mane of silky smoothness. Instead, pull your hair up towards the ceiling, imagining a horseshoe shape coming out of your crown. (Stick with us here.) Hair in the horseshoe should always be blasted in an upwards direction, while hair falling below the horseshoe can be styled downwards for smoothness.

6. Holding The Dryer Too Close. It's totally counterintuitive; holding the mouth of the blow dryer right on top of hair doesn't dry it faster, but only leaves tell-tale damage and pouf in its wake. Always dry with a plastic nozzle in place to regulate and direct heat, and keep it at least an inch away from strands. We had to try it to believe it, but it really does speed things along faster by providing a more even dry -- kinda of similar to a rotating dish in a microwave.

7. Holding The Dryer In The Wrong Position. Your goal: keep that nozzle parallel to each section of hair you hit. Otherwise, the heat will irritate and rough up the cuticle, leaving you with flyaways, damage and smoking strands. And by that, we don't mean sexy.

8. Keeping The Dryer Motionless. Some shake, rattle 'n roll is good for your hips, and apparently, your hair too. Keeping that dryer moving ensures that hair will dry at the same rate all over, and it will actually prevent your shoulder and wrist from hurting from the strain of staying in one spot. "To a stylist, this is second nature, and we do it almost subconsciously," says Scrivo.

9. Going Too Fast. "Women often blow-dry..as if they're in some kind of panic. This is not a race against time. Slow down the process, be more methodical and careful," says Scrivo. In fact, if you race through the process, you'll likely find that you need need to keep going back and re-doing sections anyway, wasting more time in the long run. If your hair dries rapidly (lucky you) before you get a chance to style the section, simply keep a spray bottle of water nearby for a refreshing spritz.

10. Not Drying The Hair Completely. This is for the frizz afflicted out there; if the pouf starts growing almost immediately after you've finished blow-drying, it means you didn't dry it 100 percent. Sometimes hair looks done, but is cold to the touch -- which is the dead giveaway that water is still hiding out in there. "Your hair should be room temperature after blow-drying," advises Scrivo.

If you've ever tried to recreate anything from a basic ponytail to the sexy bed hair seen on celebs and runway models with less-than-stellar results, there's a reason you can't match the look.

And it's not your hairstyling skills.

Experts tell us there are five essential tools in that are key to pulling off any hairstyle you want to create with ease.

The good news is, you can find all of them at your local beauty supply store.

And remember, attitude is key.

"Confidence is the best tool or product we use. When the girls walk down the runway, they believe they look good, even if they hate the clothes, hair and makeup. If you're trying a new look or product, own it!" says Rsession Tools co-founder and Fashion Week backstage fixture Kevin Ryan.

Bungee Elastics

Ponytails look freshest when you finger comb strands into place, but the process of pulling the gathered hair through a regular elastic destroys the piece-y texture and flirtatious tail height of your pony. This is why celebrities and models opt instead for bungee elastics.

Like a mini bungee cord, you simply wrap the elastic around your hair, and secure by hooking the ends together or on the surface of the elastic so as not to disturb the finish or volume of your hair.

"Regular elastics can only be wrapped a certain amount of times, and sometimes it's too tight or too loose. It's like shoes not coming in half sizes," says Ryan. "I like bungee elastics, as they allow you to wrap the elastics around until they are a perfect fit."

Dry Shampoo

How do red carpet updos stay in place so beautifully, when your attempts to replicate result in strands slipping out of place and flattening in minutes? It's actually not hairspray that's the key, but a dry shampoo that stylists just about always use to prep roots before styling hair.

"These work by applying a layer of fine powder to the roots of the hair. It will absorb the hair oil, and when you brush it out a few minutes later, the hair will be fuller and dryer looking. It adds volume to limp, fine hair and gives great texture for updos, as hair that is too clean is slippery and hard to style," says Ryan.

To apply, work through sections of hair separated by a pick comb, and spray powder in opposite direction of hair growth, at the root. Allow to absorb for a few minutes, and then brush out. Not only will your hair fall into different shapes more easily, but this is a great way to cheat more days out of a blowout.

Our favorite picks for dry shampoo include Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo and Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray.

Point-Tipped Straightening Iron

Straight hair on the red carpet always looks like freshly ironed sheets, while waves and curls capture long-lasting bounce. Yet the reason why your results are fleeting most likely has to do with the use of a too big or bulky-shaped flat iron.

"Don't buy a big iron to save time, because it will be hard to manipulate, and you won't be able to direct the hair. If the edges are beveled, you can create volume and movement in the hair without leaving the creases that sharp edges can," says Ryan.

"I like an iron that tapers to a point so that you can get to the hard-to-reach parts of hair, like bangs. Curved edges and a heated curved back are great for straightening and adding volume to the hair," adds Ryan.

Our picks include the Rsession Tools Pin Point Iron and Lava Flo Pin Point Straightening Iron.

Backcombing Brush Or Comb

While the '80s may have given the art of hair teasing a bad name, a solid back comb is the crowning foundation for most hair styles you see sported on red carpets and runways.

"When you want to create volume, you need a back comb. A regular brush or comb doesn't have enough bristles or teeth. The more teeth and the closer they are placed together, the better," says Ryan.

Grasping a section of hair, push a few smooth yet firm strokes down toward the root. Once you have a good base, continue the back-combing through to the ends, though using less pressure. Then spray a light workable hairspray for hold, making sure that the formula isn't too sticky. "Don't be afraid of too much volume -- it's easy to tame and remove," says Ryan.

Once you've finished teasing, gently smooth down the exterior with a bamboo brush with both nylon and boar bristles for the sleekest results.

And don't get frustrated -- rarely does anyone learn to back-comb the first few times they try. With some practice, you'll be able to add the technique to your styling repertoire.

Salt Spray

Ever wonder why your authentic bed hair never quite looks the same as the tousled, come-hither waves of Victoria's Secret photo shoots and Sports Illustrated swimsuit covers? It's all in the prep spray.

"This is a backstage staple, as it gives a rough lived-in look, but still gives volume. If you blow-dry it in, it gives a dry full texture. When used on curly hair, it gives a chunky, sexy look. I like to use a little cream on the ends to give definition," says Ryan.

For texturized hair that sits with volume, spritz all over roots before blow-drying with a round brush. Or to add a piece-y lived-in look, finish your style with a few spritzes all over strands, and distribute with your fingers.

Ryan's favorites include Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray and the new TIGI Session Series Salt Spray.

At 46-years-old, Mary-Louise Parker is a breath of fresh air with her age-defying skin and shiny hair.

So when celebrity makeup artist Tina Turnbow sat down with the "Weeds" star for The New York Times Style Magazine to talk everything from good genes to Twizzlers, we were enthralled. Parker dished on the importance of wearing sunblock and eating healthy, plus her musician beau Charlie Mars revealed his grooming habits.

There's nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to Parker's beauty regime. But when Turnbow asked if she's had any beauty mishaps recently, we were surprised to learn of Parker's disappointment with the Brazilian Hair Straightening Treatment.

"I've experienced hair fall-out in the past, and it is not fun. This treatment resulted in more," Parker told Turnbow.

Her advice? "Don't do it!"
Created in response to stylist requests, a new styling aid from Biomega might soon have you shouting, "Shake it!" The powdery product, which is called Shake It!, blends with other products to adjust to each user's hair care needs.

"After testing Shake It!, our stylists came back to us saying, 'I can finally create customized formulas for every client!" Luis Alvarez, co-founder and vice president creative of Aquage and Biomega, told Stylelist.

The Biomega line of hair care and styling products is dedicated to maintaining hair that's regularly color- and heat-treated. The gentle formulas are free of sulfates, parabens, sodium-chloride and gluten, and they're loaded with lightweight omega EFAs (essential fatty acids).

Though Biomega Styling Shake It! Volume Boosting Activator looks like it might be a hair powder or dry shampoo, it most certainly is not. When you shake this transformative powder into your hand and combine it with any styling or texturizing product, you now have a volume-amplifying version of said product.

The more Shake It! you add, the stronger the hold and greater the volume you'll create. The powder can't be used on its own; it must be activated by another styling product.

We combined a few sprinkles of Shake It! with Biomega's new Behave Smoothing Elixir and massaged a bit into our roots, and then raked the rest through the length of our hair before blow-drying. The result was bulk that our fine, limp hair hasn't seen in years.

The best part? Our hair didn't feel sticky or untouchable. It was soft and shiny, probably due to the omega-rich oils and UV- and heat-protective ingredients in Smoothing Elixir's formula. Shake it!

Speaking of locks-enhancing products, check out how the Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil collection added shine to our writer's mane.
Biomega Launches Shake It! If you've ever used a flat iron, you've likely suffered from smoke and sizzle that led to split and fried ends.
But contrary to popular belief, you don't need to endure damage in order to achieve the sleek and smooth locks that flat iron addicts crave. Most people have simply never been versed on the proper way to flat iron. Bad techniques live on, and are often passed down from family, friends and poorly trained stylists.

Before you pick up a flat iron again, you'll want to read these easy expert tips by Misikko stylist John Davis. And be sure to enter our giveaway on Twitter for a Hana Elite 1-inch Flat Iron (valued at $360).

Size your section: There's no one standard size to section your hair for flat iron use, as hair thickness, length and iron size all vary greatly. "The goal is to make sure that each and every strand of hair gets even heat distribution. If you choose a section that is too large, the outer portions will get heated while leaving the inner portions unaffected," says Davis. Experiment to find what amount heats all of your strands equally, and then stick to that size going forward.

Smooth, don't pull: "Those who have long been using irons such as the CHI have a tendency to grip the hair and pull it straight, using friction. This method will give you decent results in the short run, but over time, will damage your hair," says Davis. Instead, move the iron slowly yet steadily through your hair, focusing on smoothing the strands instead of tugging down on them.

Don't pass multiple times: "Passing over the same section continuously -- like more than three times -- damages hair more than using a high temperature setting," says Davis. The perfect degree varies by hair type and condition, but you'll want to experiment until you find a temperature that gives you the desired result in one to two passes. And if you're smoking, you're burning.

Use heat-protective serum: Anytime you flat iron, be sure to prep strands with a heat-protective serum, like those made with jojoba and argan oil. Typically, serums are more effective than sprays because they coat strands in a protective fashion, but be sure to use no more than a quarter-size amount at a time to prevent buildup.

Don't iron wet hair: While it's OK to style hair that is still slightly damp, wet hair magnifies heat to dangerously scorching levels. Too often, people use the flat iron to do most of the straightening work, when in fact, that's the role of a hair dryer. Use your iron as more of a finishing touch to set shine and seal in moisture and sleekness, or else pay the price with badly heat-damaged hair.
Smooth, healthy, shiny hair: Isn't that what every girl dreams of?

My hair was in dire need of a pick-me-up (think dull, dry and uncharacteristically lackluster) when I was invited to celebrate the relaunch of two Organix collections, Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil and Ever Straight Brazilian Keratin Therapy, and receive a complimentary treatment.

I've been hearing about the miracle wonder that is Moroccan argan oil for a while and was curious to see if it merits all the gratuitous hype.

Here's the 411 on this super-ingredient for those who have yet to experience its magic: Argan oil is a powerful vitamin-packed antioxidant from the southwest region of Morocco. When used as a hair treatment, it instantly penetrates to soften, strengthen, restore shine and increase elasticity. It also protects strands against UV damage, big bonus!

The Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil collection includes Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner, formulated to restore moisture and deeply cleanse the scalp; Moroccan Argan Oil Renewing Treatment, a leave in formula that nourishes and hydrates the hair without weighing in down; Moroccan Argan Oil Penetrating Oil, frizz-fighting, ultralight oil that provides a radiant shine.

Each product is available for $7.99 at most major drugstores. And like all Organix products, the collection is sulfate-free and packaged in eco-friendly bottles.

After my hair was washed and conditioned with the Organix Renewing shampoo and conditioner, the Renewing Treatment was distributed from my roots to ends using a wide-tooth comb and left in for five minutes to do its thing (you can leave it in for longer or shorter, depending on hair needs). Following a rinse and some towel drying, the stylist distributed a less than dime-size drop of Penetrating Oil throughout my hair and got to work with the blow-dryer. He added a little more oil at the end for an extra shot of shine.
Everyone looks amazing after a blowout, we all know that, but I noticed an immediate change while my hair was still soaking wet following the conditioning treatment.

My strands felt significantly softer and almost weightless. And while it's usually an uphill battle to comb my waist-length hair out after it has been compacted into a little sink, with the lightest swipe of a comb every knot and tangle unraveled.

Then it was time to blow-dry, and I watched, amazed, as my hair was whipped into silk. The process was not unlike Rumpelstiltskin who spun all that straw into gold to help the fair maiden, only this took way less time.

When I came back to the office that afternoon, I was flooded with compliments and requests to touch my silky strands -- I couldn't blame the StyleList team, my hair was just so irresistibly soft!

In the days following, my oil-prone hair remained clean and fresh as can be. In fact, I waited an entire week before washing my hair and it still wasn't visibly oily! I gave the collection another test drive on my own, without the professionals or a blow-dryer, and noticed the same increase in softness and shininess, phew!
Long locks dominated the Spring 2011 runways and are totally on par with this season's
'70s takeover. And what better way to complement those high-rise bell bottoms than with long, sleek strands parted in the center, right?

Long-haired ladies are lucky in that they can easily create topknots, braids and updos -- there's a reason the hair extensions industry is booming! However, they have a much harder time when it comes to maintenance. Split ends, breakage, dryness, heat and environmental damage are intensified with long hair, so proper hair care is of utmost importance.

Fortunately, our friends at Refinery29.com have a lot of love for long-haired gals and went straight to the pros for expert tips and product musts.
The forecast doesn't only determine what we wear, but how our hair is going to act -- which means our entire mood can depend on Mr. Weatherman.

But StyleList is staging an intervention on how to weatherproof your hair.

We've asked top experts how to use today's advanced product technology and their best styling tips to make sure our hair looks fabulous, no matter what the five-day forecast.

So humidity and thunderstorms, step aside; we're about to rock a good hair day.

Storms

Whether you live in New York, Seattle or Chicago, a rainy day can dampen even the best styling plans. San Diego salon owner Jet Rhys says to stay away from waxes and gels on drizzly days, as hair will immediately flatten and become sticky if it comes in contact with droplets or flurries of moisture. Instead, opt for a lightweight styling spray like Shu Uemura Art of Hair Depsea Water that leaves behind no residue or buildup.

An emergency hair kit could also come in handy. "Keep a little pouch in your purse with a mini brush, hair elastics and pins. If your hair gets wet, it will look chic if you pull it back," suggests Rhys. A simple twisted chignon secured with an elastic and pinned to just above the nape of the neck is an elegant way to use stormy weather to your styling advantage. Try a deep side part to make it look even more intentional.

Dry Heat

When the thermometer tips over 90 degrees in desert cities like Las Vegas, "dry heat" takes on a whole new meaning. Celebrity stylist Oribe says the best way to counteract the damage such strong rays of sun wreak on strands is to choose moisturizing products like hair masks in the shower and styling cream before you step out into the heat.

You'll also want to unplug that flatiron on scorching days. "Women tend to straighten their hair too much and force it into an unnatural style. Embrace your hair's texture and wear it more natural on hot days," advises Oribe.

To encourage the easiest hair texture -- waves -- run a product like Oribe Curl by Definition Crème through hair while it's flipped upside down, and quickly work a blow-dryer over your hair without the tug of a brush. Throw hair back and spray with a soft-hold hairspray. "You'll get full, natural, rough-looking texture," says Oribe.

Humidity

Not surprisingly, Rhys suggests not fighting hair's most treacherous enemy. But it's less about working with the texture of your hair, which will want to frizz no matter how you style it, than it is about arming your strands with all the tools it needs to not react with a pouf to high humidity.

Apply a light silicone product like Avon's Anti-Frizz Lotus Shield serum to cocoon strands in a layer of protection that fills the dips and splits in hair that generate frizz. Because even the lightest silicone products can build up on the scalp, you'll want to use a clarifying wash like Neutrogena's Anti-Residue shampoo or an apple-cider vinegar rinse every once in a while to maintain a fresh feel.

Once your silicone serum is applied, distribute evenly with a wide-tooth comb, and then dry hair thoroughly until bone dry, using the cold-shot setting if most comfortable. Leaving no room for moisture is your best weapon against frizz, as are braided, coiled and pinned styles that keep strands sleek by trapping out humid air.

Wind

Your morning styling routine can feel fruitless when you step out into high winds that tousle your locks right out of their style. "Products with memory are great so that when the wind stops blowing, you can run your hands through your hair, and the style will come back," advises Oribe.

A workable gel like Oribe Gel Serum or Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum smoothes and conditions while providing hold. If applied before styling, the gentle hold will allow hair to move with the wind, but will return to its original shape when finger-combed back into place. The trick is to set your style with heat and wait a few minutes or run a dryer on the cool button to set before you step out the door.

If you have wispy face-framing layers or are growing bangs out, today's the day to wear a headband, or else risk picking flyaways out of your lip gloss all day long. Cloth bands like these sleek styles by Goody are your best bet at keep strands smoothly pulled back; pair a thin strap with a bun for a balletic touch, or opt for a thick band with a teased crown for a retro feel.

Cold Freeze

Frosty air can zap the moisture out of your hair, resulting in pesky static that refuses to lie flat. But why do some suffer with static regularly, while others are hardly ever bothered by it? Rhys says the most common culprit is over-shampooing, which can strip natural oils from your hair, causing static electricity.

The best fix is to simply skip a day or two of washing, though if you can't, spraying a leave-in conditioner all over hair to fortify the strand with moisture will also help. If you're especially plagued by static, switch to a sulfate-free and non-foaming product like Wen by Chaz Dean's Cleansing Conditioner when the weather is cold.

If static catches you midday, you can still stop it in its tracks. Simply spray your hairbrush with Static Guard and then run it through your hair, suggests Rhys. Keeping fabric softener sheets in your purse can come in handy too, as you can reuse the same sheet several times to run over hair to kill static.
Salty Beach Air

Salt and moisture hang in the air at the beach so heavily that it can deposit in your hair, leaving a gummy and often tangled mess that invites damaging breakage when you attempt to brush through later. For greatest manageability, raking a conditioner like Oribe Foundation Mist or Frizz-Ease Daily Nourish Spray through hair and then claw-clipping into an easy French twist will seal in moisture, nourish hair and protect it from the damaging rays of the sun.

You can even turn a day at the beach into an opportunity to indulge in a luxe spa-like treatment by brushing freshly washed strands in argan oil or your favorite deep conditioner before gently twisting up and away from your face. The warmth of the sun will help the treatment penetrate the cuticle, and you get to enjoy the deliciously scented benefits all day -- not to mention supersoft second-day hair.
