Last night, at the premiere of the Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess film, "One Day," we spotted Rachel Roy on the red carpet wearing pajamas. "Can someone who knows about fashion tell me if that is, like, a trend?" asked a reporter from a celebrity magazine standing nearby, "Yes," I answered, "Indeed it is." Although Rachel Roy was wearing pajamas that she purchased in the Hamptons, she was accurately channeling Celine's Resort 2012 collection. Fittingly, Roy paired her pajamas with an aubergiene Celine clutch and added sparkly Manolo Blahniks to dress up the look. "Finally! I have a place to wear these heels!" Roy explained. What do you think of Roy's Celine inspired do?
Seeing Double | Rachel Roy's Pajamas vs. Celine Resort originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 18:50:00 EST. -Daphne Guinness told Vogue UK how simple it is to get dressed in the morning. We have a total girl-crush on Jessica Quirk. Jessica's like that friend everyone has who can easily mix her Target with her Tory Burch, and can whip up a gorgeous outfit with only bare-bones basics (think a plain white T-shirt and a full skirt). When we ran into her at her most recent book signing --at SoHo's trendy DKNY store -- Quirk was wearing a lacy LBD, and well, it made us want to be friends with her even more.

Rather than keep all of her style expertise to herself, the blogger behind the wildly popular What I Wore is imparting some of her best fashion advice in her new book -- aptly titled, What I Wore. With her beautiful illustrations lining the pages (you may have seen them recently in InStyle & Glamour), Quirk covers nearly every sartorial question or dilemma ever had.

Need to know how to dress for work in 90 degree weather? Jessica has the answer. Or, if you're looking for a checklist of seasonal must-haves, Quirk's got you covered. We caught up with the busy blogger, and she dished on everything from her favorite jams to her fall fashion predictions. And check out our gallery below to see Jessica's favorite outfits that she's ever worn.

StyleList: What celebrity would you love to style, and what would you dress them in?
Jessica Quirk: I don't think she needs any help with her personal style, but I would love to swap closets with Zooey Deschanel! She does such a great job of mixing vintage and modern, and always looks adorable and quirky.

StyleList: What is your favorite fashion decade/era, and why?
JQ: I cannot pick one! I love vintage and I'd consider myself somewhat of a time traveler with my closet. It really depends on my mood. In the past I've done some seriously '50s and '70s inspired looks, and I just helped clean out an estate full of dry cleaned, mint condition clothes from the '60s (in my size! life doesn't get sweeter than that!) I've always loved history and it makes me so happy to dip into the past with how I get dressed now.

StyleList: What fall fashion trend are you most excited to try?
JQ: I'm keeping my eyes peeled for cute, childish prints made grown-up in great fabrics. Think little elephants, foxes and giraffes on blouses and dresses. I am crazy about anything with a fox on it.

StyleList: What is the best fashion/styling advice you've ever received?
JQ: Isn't the best style advice a little cliché? Don't let the clothes wear you. You're never fully dressed without a smile. Those are two of my favorites. I like to tell women that when you look good, you feel good. Wear what makes YOU happy. Not every trend needs to be for every woman.

StyleList: What song is on repeat right now on your IPod?
JQ: Oooh. I just charged my iPod for a long flight (for the first time in a long time), so I listened to some of my old favorites (Vampire Weekend, Mumford and Sons). I also recently got a free digital download when I bought the new Fleet Foxes LP "Helplessness Blues". I love the title track. It's about a young person finding his/her way. Do I want to fit in? Stand out? Who knows. I can absolutely relate.
Modern dressing has thrown traditional fashion rules out the window. We live in a rogue world of winter whites, black and brown, mixed with mismatched accessories. So, why banish your beloved sequins to the dark? Temper them with a slouchy tee or grey sweatshirt to take them from glam to relaxed. Cocktail hour favorites add a little shine to your everyday wardrobe.
Chambray may just be the perfect denim-inspired summertime fabric - it's lightweight, airy, workable and most importantly, back for another go as one of the top seasonal staples. Though the chambray shirt always seems to remain a part of our hot weather wardrobes each year, this time around it definitely got a lot more press, as chambray was seen on several of the big runways at fashion week, including both Derek Lam and Chloè.

The chambray shirt is an American icon, one that in its history has spawned the workman's term "blue collar" and helped define that timeless California cool-kid look. Now, and especially so this season, there are a plethora of ways to perfect your chambray shirt dressing, both with and without the classic indigo button-down. Whether you favor the rugged or the refined, this season's chambray shirt gets even more versatile with an array of fits, washes and chicly detailed designs.

Check out our picks for the seven best chambray shirts to grab now and top off your easy summer look while the heat is high. Find out what denim pieces this blogger lives in.

Believe it or not, there are ways to wear a jumpsuit without looking like you're high-tailing it straight back into the '60s or '70s. The trend took us on a trip down memory lane -- Marc Jacobs showed orange, red and magenta disco duds with flared bottoms and embellished belts on his spring 2011 runway, and Diane Von Furstenberg sent models down the runway in printed jumpsuits that seemed to be a nod to her all-night-long dance sessions back at Studio 54.

However the jumpsuit's come full circle for summertime, offering versions in pretty pale hues and dainty floral prints that, whether paired with a blazer like Rose Byrne or worn on their own, are perfectly subtle pieces for any day or night time affair. Click through our slideshow above to see some of the best and most versatile jumpsuits on sale now. And see what other notables are jumping for jumpsuits.
Style Update: The Old School Jumpsuit Gets Prim and Proper [Gallery] originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 17:30:00 EST.
Scouring vintage stores for the perfect summer piece can often feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Luckily for us, Sammy Davis (of Sammy Davis Vintage) knows a thing or two about vintage fashion, from the jargon to the best way to harmonize your Urban Outfitters with old-school finds.

To help us build our retro repertoire, the effervescent blogger shows us five of her summer essentials, and the best ways to style them. Go ahead, and find your vintage nirvana.

1.) Straw hat

Sammy Says: Straw hats can be worn fashionably chic without looking like you stepped out of Old McDonald's farm! They'll protect you from the sun all while adding a casual vibe to a more upscale look. I love wearing straw hats with florals -- especially a neutral colored one with dark florals for a light/dark balance on my top & bottom.

2.) High waist Shorts

Sammy Says: High-waisted shorts need not be boring denim! Look for the trend circa the '70s and '80s in bold brights and colorful designs. By day you can throw them on over your bikini at the beach

3.) A maxi skirt

Sammy Says: Maxi skirts without crinoline (like tulle, in the 1800s literally the hoop below a skirt) can make the wearer look granny and haggard. Vintage maxi skirts with crinoline have more body to them. Anything not fleece or sweatsuit material will hold shape rather than sticking and conforming to the wearers body, which is what I see a ton of maxi skirts do because they aren't made from quality materials with shape.

4.) Black bustier

Sammy Says: Vintage bustiers are cut so elegantly and can really accentuate a girls figure when worn right. Add an open blazer on top with eye hook snaps so the buttons don't distract. I love black with sherbert-colors, like these orange sherbert tapered pants.

5.) Sequin top

Sammy Says: Sequin tops were popular evening wear pieces in the '60s and usually worn with matching skirts and jackets. Opt for just the sequin top for a more modern look. Wear with striped, polka dot or floral prints for a summer sequins wearable by day. I love putting sequin tops OVER fitted body dresses, like my polka dot dress from American Apparel.
5 Vintage Pieces to Try Right Now originally appeared on StyleList on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 11:10:00 EST. This fourth of July, my personal tribute to America will be subtle (Maybe a red belt will accessorize a white tank top and denim cut offs). We can count on celebrities, however, to go all out for Independence Day. In anticipation of what Katy Perry might come up with, we put together a nostalgic collection of stars wearing red, white and blue. Check out our gallery below to see an eclectic combination of celebrities in loud, flag-themed outfits including Meryl Streep wearing Catherine Malandrino, Raquel Welch in Myra Breckinridge (aka one of THE WORST MOVIEs OF ALL TIME according to Harry Medved in The Fifty Worst Films of All Time (And How They Got That Way) and Heidi Montag (in a bikini, obviously). Who do you think looks best?

It's not always easy to beat the heat during the summer when you have to dress appropriately for your everyday nine to five. Though we often want to rock a loose-fitting tank/tee with a favorite pair of short shorts when the temp hits 90, these ensembles aren't exactly meant for an average weekly meeting with the boss.

From Marc by Marc's loose and casual look, to DVF's play on the bermuda length, to Jason Wu's suited up attire, the Spring runways showed plenty of ways to wear these fun and functional shorts. Balancing beach wear with office wear can be done, and with some serious savoir-faire too. So whether you're in the mood for a casual pair or want to dress it up with a more tailored pair, we've found the best shorts to slip on this summer before you head out the door for work.

Click through the slideshows below and check out our three favorite ways to wear the trend.
Mesh tank tops are no longer the uniform of club kids -- look no further than Isabel Marant's spring 2011 collection. An unfinished scrap of mesh can lend a badass vibe to preppy wear, whether peeping under a nautical skirt, or layered with a varsity jacket.

With summer weather playing us hot and cold (literally), we're craving new ways to layer our spring/summer essentials. Aimee Song of Song of Style gave us even more reason to play with perforated pieces -- the San Francisco native turned a bright-white Gap Body mesh tank into an unexpected classic by pairing it with comfy basics. A slouchy blazer, drawstring shorts and polka-dot blouse served as the feminine backdrop to her athletic top. We love how she gave her tank some hard-edged friends to play with, too. An Alexander Wang bucket bag and a mix of bracelets added the finishing touches. We're obsessed, and fully ready to ditch our Vince hand-knit pullovers for this sporty-sleek look.

Head over to Song of Style to get more summer layering ideas. Chances are, your summer headwear routine hasn't changed much from season to season -that floppy raffia hat is a great go-to for the beach and a sleek straw fedora never fails to top off any sunny daytime ensemble.

If you feel like switching things up though, why not try on a new kind topper? A hood isn't just for that ratty old sweatshirt you work out in anymore, now it's fast becoming a bonafide trend.

Seen on Karolina Kurkova at Monday's CFDA Awards, the hooded gown (hers by Diane Von Furstenberg) is blazing the trail for more pieces to rock the built-in head gear. Stars like Lindsey Lohan and Kim Kardashian have worn sexy mini versions by Brian Lichtenberg, while stores like American Apparel and J.Crew are selling sporty hooded swimsuits and tops.

The best part? You don't have to put the hood up if you don't want to - it looks just as good down and fallen into a cowl back. So whether it's red carpet ready or just ready for a chic city stroll, it's definitely good to be in the hood this season.
All In The Hood originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 15:15:00 EST. Though it may be hard to spot on the runways, there is a method to Marni's madness.

While the eye-catching looks Marni puts out each season tend to skew a bit toward the off-beat, when broken down to their individual parts are perfectly punctuated pieces that add a pop of life to any ensemble:

1. The perfect topper for any occa- ok, maybe this one is best left to runway & editorial.
2 & 3. A gorgeous print and hint of peplum? Yes, please. Breaking up the top & skirt is a prime example of how to find accessibility in what may have started out as an intimidating look.
4. A stylish alternative to the sporty sandal.
5. Bike shorts - they're all over the runways. Just sayin.
6. Marni is famous for its crafty accessories. These layered necklaces are versatile pieces that can go from your plain white tee to LBD.

Lesson learned - don't judge a Marni look by the cover. There's a lot more to it than meets the eye.
Dissecting the Runway: Marni originally appeared on StyleList on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 16:09:00 EST. I wasn't allowed to wear black growing up, so from early on I learned a thing or two about dressing in blossoming clothes, and at one unfortunate point in elementary school, I was mistaken for a rose bed and hosed down by a well-meaning gardener. I learned the hard way about how to wear flowery patterns, let's just put it that way.
First things first, if you don't want to look like the curtains your grandma has in her sun room (or like the garden she has growing out back), then I suggest staying away from anything both flowery pique. Not all textures and flowers are friends. If you must wear the structured textile with flowers all over it, then make sure it's a skirt or pair of shorts -- wearing it on the top would be a mistake. Tuck in a wide-striped tank or tee into your bottoms for an edgier, downtown look.

For dresses, try light-weight fabrics with large floral prints -- the brighter the colors the better, I say. It's a "go big or go home" scenario when donning blooms on dresses. Anything puny and it starts to look messy and old. Teeny tiny flowers, however, are good for delicate and feminine blouses and scarves. Wear your flowery blouses with cut-off shorts, jeans or navy khakis for fun in the sun or shade.

Where we're going to run into most problems with floras is with the jumper, or romper, whatever you call those one-pieced atrocities which, beyond all measure of comprehension, combine a tank with shorts. This look is so hard to pull off and if attempted, please avoid any romper with flowers. If you should ignore this advice and get doused by a man carrying a watering can, don't say I didn't warn you.

Don't get me wrong, there is no need to be afraid of floral patterns, but there is need to take caution when styling some of nature's prettiest blooms. Add in a solid color somewhere (throw on a jean jacket over a floral maxi, or pair a flowery top with dark jeans) so your look is not too verdant. When you master your floral separates, I think you'll find wearing them as efflorescent as I do. So to that end, I guess I'll see you in the slammer, you floral-loving hipster, you!

For years my mother's wedding dress has gone ignored, relegated to a dark back corner of the closet, and for two very valid reasons: 1) it's just so seventies (my parents eloped in Berkeley in 1973 and my mom bought the frock at a local shop) and 2) I'm twenty pounds heavier than my 28-year-old mom was in that post-Twiggy era of super skinny-ness.

My dad carries my mom over the threshold of their Berkeley apartment, 1973.

But with spring just around the corner, I was drawn to the dress's floral pattern and pulled it off its hanger. I held my breath - in suspense, and to facilitate my mom's zipping up of the back. And what do you know? Not only did it fit, but I wanted to never take it off. Beneath the tight empire waist, the skirt of that seventies dress is like a potato sack and I can move around like the free spirit the women's movement encouraged us to be.

I'm also drawn to the long skirt and sleeves because as I "age" (I'm three years older than my mom was when she wed), I've become more appreciative of modesty. Cooling off in summer does not have to mean showing skin--it can also mean wearing loose comfortable cottons. So in this case: check, check and check.

I also realized I could give the dress a more modern feel with the textured cream blazer I've been living in, and some oversized costume jewelry. Of course, I didn't get through the first day of wearing it to work without a little tear in the torso, but that's what tailors were put on this earth to handle.

Also stashed away in those Connecticut closets are many of my late grandmother's clothes. Along with my mother, she was one of the most stylish women I've ever known. There's one winter coat in particular that I always pull out, look over, and declare "I'm not ready for it yet" before putting it back into hiding.

So as Mother's Day nears, I would advise all women to hold on to their mother's and grandmother's more meaningful clothes, even if they're not very "you" right now. It's never too late to grow into them.
Wedding Belles: How I Finally Fell In Love With My Mother's Wedding Dress originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 04 May 2011 13:05:00 EST. Didn't shed those 5 extra winter pounds in time for sundress season? Neither did we! But chin up -- it is possible to lose them still, simply by getting dressed in the morning! Follow our easy tips for dressing slimmer and you'll be rocking a little summer frock -- and looking and feeling amazing -- within minutes.

o. Create Strong Foundations

First things first: before we even get to clothes let's address undergarments. Choose them well and they'll shave 5 - 10 pounds off your frame by lifting you up and sucking you in all around. It's a no-brainer! Make sure you've got an assortment of well-fitting bras and supportive shapewear on hand that will work for a range of outfits and occasions.

Sam Saboura, stylist, author, tv personality and makeover expert extraordinaire, tells StyleList, "You would never build a house without starting with a great foundation and the same thing goes for your body and your style. When I work with a client I love to set the tone with the proper foundation garments, primarily a slimmer -- or a girdle, if you will -- because that's going to highlight the small part of your waist, hide all those bumps and bulges and really smooth you out to make your clothes look amazing."

Yummie Tummie shapewear creator Heather Thomson suggests wearing a bustless slip under dresses. "A good slip is the passport into your closet," she says. "Worn under any dress, your figure will look flawless. Rock those curves, girl, and show off that hourglass figure." Another slimming option are the longer bike short styles, which work well under pants or skirts.

o. Become a Fitness Guru

No, not a workout maven (although that's good too). We mean a fashion fit expert: make sure your clothes fit to a tee! Close-fitting -- not tight -- clothing that skims the body's shape is generally more flattering for all sizes and types.

"A lot of women have this misconception when they feel uncomfortable about their body, they want to cover it up with tons of clothing," says Saboura. But, in general, adding extra volume is a big Don't. "A lot of women have really great curves but they hide them behind their clothes. But what you need to do is highlight the assets and show off your best features."

You can start with pieces that work well on your body, then tweak as necessary for a perfect fit, according to stylist and fashion expert Lindsay Albanese. "Start off with clothing that accentuates your favorite feature," she tells StyleList. And if you have a difficult-to-fit shape, "an affordable tailor in the area -- maybe one at your cleaner's -- should be on speed-dial."

Saboura suggests adding figure-hugging details: "If you're curvy you want to look for jackets that have princess seams or little darts under your bust to find that natural curve for you. You can always add those darts and seams to any jacket or shirt that you have if you have a good tailor."

o. Create Diversionary Tactics

Use accessories, interesting necklines, patterns and bright color to attract attention away from bulges and towards whatever part of your body you want to emphasize, be it your decolletage, waistline or pretty face!

Say you're more bottom-heavy -- you can keep all the attention on your amazing upper half by sporting a brightly colored or patterned cardigan or top, according to Charla Krupp, style expert and author of "How to Never Look Fat Again." She tells StyleList. "You want all the color, the jazz, the fun fabric and the pattern on top," to draw the eye upward, while toning down the bottom half.

Strategically baring skin is a great diversionary tactic too. Have great shoulders? Go with a one-shouldered dress or top. V-necks and u-necks highlight the decolletage. Three-quarter-length sleeves show off slender forearms, and knee-length pencil skirts streamline the lower body and showcase toned calves.

"When I look for a dress, I look at 3 places on the body: the neckline, the small part of the arms and the legs. Showing skin in the right places is going to show off those curves and make you look longer and leaner," says Saboura.

A wide or colorful belt will emphasize your waistline and hourglass shape, drawing the eye away from a heavy bust or larger hips. And a beautiful, sparkling brooch on a lapel, a dramatic red lip or kohl-rimmed eye will keep attention away from a pot-belly or chunky upper arms.

o. Use Optical Illusions

Graphic effects can play tricks on the eye to help shape the body and minimize bulk. Color-blocking, smaller-scale prints and vertical and diagonal stripes all work this effect. Case in point: reality star Whitney Port recently donned a strategically color-blocked dress that had a magical, waist-minimizing effect.

This season's color blocking can be miraculous for whittling inches off your frame if you go with one long vertical block of color down the center of your body, with darker pieces on the sides.

Sailor stripes may be all the rage these days but they're not necessarily the most flattering pattern. For a slimming effect, go for vertical or diagonal stripes instead. "Vertical lines are always a good choice because they streamline your figure," Albanese confirms.

And all-over, small-scale pattern works great too. Saboura recommends them: "One diffused pattern tricks the eye into taking in the shape of your body in one overall consistent shape. It will disguise the distracting bumps and bulges."
o. Achieve Balance

If you're top- or bottom-heavy the best thing you can do is balance out your silhouette by adding a little (just a little!) volume to your smaller half.

"You really want to balance the proportion of your upper body to your lower body," says Saboura. "Busty girls can look for v-necks and scoop necks when it comes to a flattering neckline. It'll minimize your shoulders and your bust." For the opposite situation, the expert advises, "When it comes to bottoms, boot-cut jeans and pencil skirts are always winners. And I encourage women to add a touch of volume to the upper half to balance the curves and fullness of their lower half. Cardigans and little jackets are great for this. And for summer there are lots of lightweight, draped tops that will add a little bit of volume without overwhelming your frame."

And, Saboura adds, full-figured women should "Consider accessories that are in line with the size of their frame. Think about how curvy you are and balance your body with medium-size accessories like purses, belts and jewelry. A big, chunky heel balances the fullness of your frame and your curves." This point was recently a hot topic: see the uproar created by 'The Sartorialist' after he commented on a woman's chunky-shoe choice being complementary to her full figure.
