Charlotte Ronson Launches Beauty Collection This Fall

Charlotte Ronson has long been known for a sort of effortless, laid-back kind of cool, and the same applies to her girly meets downtown clothing lines. Now all of that has been translated to beauty, as the designer is set to launch her first hair and makeup collection exclusively with Sephora this September. The small, edited line -- inspired by family and friends -- includes six items: A beachy salt spray named 'Ann' (after Ronson's gorgeously wavy-haired mother) and a sheer, nude lip gloss called 'Samantha' (for her DJ sister). Then there's 'Nicole,' a shimmery, earth tone-hued eyeshadow palette (dedicated to close friend Nicole Richie) and 'Rashida' (as in Jones), a subtle finishing powder aimed to recreate her other pal's no-makeup makeup look. The collection also includes a liquid bronzer and blush trio.

While the line wont be able available until September 15th, you can preview everything on sephora.com right now.

Warning: Not only is this newspaper-inspired nail art super cool, but it can potentially lead to getting tipsy.

Kelsey of the Tumblr Quiet Time accepted the challenge to up her manicure skills with a written word design that has been popping up on many of our favorite beauty sites like Refinery29 and Dolce Vanity. And we love the creative idea of using the local paper than reading the most recent piece of breaking news.

The blogger perfected this print in just a few steps. First, she applied a neutral nail color like OPI Samoan Sand and allowed to dry. Then she dipped each fingernail into alcohol -- we'd recommend using vodka for better results. Press a large strip of newspaper onto the top of each soaked nail. Remove slowly and finish with a glossy top coat to seal.

How to Get the Kim Kardashian Double Lashes Look

When going for dramatic eye makeup, two pairs of lashes are better than one. Choose different types of eyelashes: a natural-looking pair (Eve uses the #105) and a pair with a little more drama (#107) for the extra glam look.

Using tweezers, remove the more dramatic lashes from their tray and layer them over the natural-looking lashes. Keep the second pair of lashes in their tray when layering to ensure that both pairs of lashes line up perfectly. No need to use glue for this step, there's already a small amount of adhesive along the strips to hold the lashes together.

Pull the newly attached lashes from the tray gently with tweezers and measure against your eye. If the lashes are too long for your lid, trim the lash from the outside.

Apply a thin coat of black eyelash glue along the strip until tacky.

Tip: It is better to use eyelash glue that dries matte black so you don't end up with a weird shine above your lash line.

Still using tweezers, try to place the lashes as close as you can to the lash line. When performing this step on yourself, you can use two tweezers to apply the lashes, one holding each end, for more stability.

Once the lashes are on your lash line, press gently to glue them onto the skin and then flip them up with the tips of your fingers. This may look strange, but you will be using the flipped fake lashes to lift and curl your natural eyelashes.

Place your finger gently on the eyelid and, using your favorite mascara, weave your natural lashes with the fake ones.

Emma Stone and Olivia Wilde have been heating up the red carpet as summer's leading ladies, and now their set to face off as Revlon's new global brand ambassadors.

The color cosmetics company has tapped the Hollywood hotties to front new and existing Revlon products, as well as star in campaigns launching early 2012 with looks created by Gucci Westman, makeup artist and global artistic director.

"These remarkably talented actresses personify the Revlon woman - glamorous, confident and bold. Together, they will help us build meaningful connections with new consumers and strengthen our relationship with existing fans of our brand," said Alan T. Ennis, Revlon president and chief executive officer, in a statement.

They join a gorgeous roster including beauties Halle Berry, Jessica Biel and Elle Macpherson.

"The Help" starlet Stone is "honored to be a part of the Revlon family" and reflects on the brand being a part of her life as a child.

She adds, "I vividly recall my mom wearing Revlon makeup and I remember getting to the age when I was finally able to wear Revlon myself. As a brand, it is a leader and innovator in the world of cosmetic beauty."

The company's commitment to raising awareness about women's issues stirs up "Cowboys & Aliens" actress Wilde. "It's exciting to join a company with a big heart and big ideas!"

The Hollywood hotties have pledged to join Revlon in it's philanthropic efforts, as the brand has raised more than $65 million for cancer research over the past 10 years.

A Black Eye From a Manicure?

That's exactly what happened to Brooke Burdine after she popped into her local nail salon for her weekly manicure.

"The next morning my boyfriend looked at me and said 'You look like you got punched in the face," says the 25-year-old marketing exec in New York City, who speed dialed her dermatologist. "The skin around my eyes was reddish-black, and also dry, irritated and itchy."

The diagnosis: an allergic shiner. This not-so-common allergic reaction occurs when blood around the eyes is unable to drain so it stays put and causes the appearance of a bar-fight-style black eye.

Usually it's from an out-of-control pollen count that causes sinuses to swell, not from getting your nails done. "The doctor asked me what new products I was using-cleanser, eye cream, makeup, detergent-and I couldn't think of anything in my routine that I'd changed," Burdine says. "But the possibilities seemed endless because he also explained that I could not be allergic to something and then develop an allergy overnight."

After discussing a laundry list of suspects, Burdine's doctor glanced at her freshly painted nails and noted that he has a lot of women come in because of allergic reactions to polish, which are laced with potentially toxic chemicals including formaldehyde.

And since Burdine wears contacts and is often touching her eyes, the polish could be the culprit. "That's when I realized that although I've always gone to the same salon and use the same brand of polish, that time I grabbed one from a company I've never used before," she says. Her doctor told her to take the polish off asap and apply Desonide, a prescription steroid cream, around her eyes to reduce the swelling in that area. "In two days I was back to normal," she says.

According to Julia Liou, cofounder of the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative, a public-advocacy group for salon safety, Brooke isn't alone. The fight for safe nail practices and products for both technicians and customers is crucial because of a slew of health hazards -- sure, a freaky black eye is one, but extreme medical conditions such as reproductive issues and cancer may also be real concerns.

Although the dangers of many chemicals used in nail products (including remover, base and top coat as well as polish) are proven and many brands are going 3 and 4-free, experts say there's still good reason to think twice before test-driving a neon pink half-moon manicure.

"Companies are saying they're taking the harmful chemicals out-formaldehyde, toluene and DBP-but no one is regulating whether or not it's true," says Liou, who estimates about 40 percent of polish on the market are 3-free, while the other 60 either aren't or have varying levels of toxic ingredients.

It's this nail industry "he-said, she-said" along with the fact that cosmetic companies aren't required to get the green light on safety from the FDA, and most nail brands don't list ingredients on their bottles like say, shampoo, that has many organizations pushing for the Safe Cosmetics Act.

This bill would demand pre-market safety assessments of all personal care products-not just nail polish. (As of right now, the Safe Cosmetics Act is expected to pass early next year.)

According to Cora Roelofs, an occupational health researcher at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, who has studied the long-term effects nail chemicals and fumes have on salon workers, many report rashes on their cheeks and hands-possibly as a result of sensitization (like getting an allergy) to acrylic compounds such as ethyl methacrylate, the main ingredient in artificial nail liquid-but all solvents such as isopropyl alcohol as well as acetone can cause rashes just by taking the natural protective oils out of skin. She also adds that nail technicians experience an abundance of respiratory problems including coughing, nose, throat and lung irritation, asthma and wheezing.

Could second-hand nail service fumes be the new second-hand smoke? Clearly, the salon workers exposed to hazardous chemicals and fumes 10 hours a day are at the most risk, but a weekly half-hour polish pit-stop can add up. "A salon might be using 3 and 4-free brands, but there are still so many different kinds of solvents in formulas as well as a lack of fresh air and a lot of dust," says Roelofs.

According to the experts interviewed, Burdine's black eye is definitely not the norm, however, doctors agree that allergic reactions from nail products and services are not only possible, they're common. "Typically, people are most allergic to chemicals in acrylic nails-from the polymers in the nails themselves to the gel and glue-which might be laced with poisonous methyl methacrylate liquid monomers (MMA), but also formaldehyde in nail hardeners and polish as well as fumes from acetone," says D'Anne Kleinsmith, M.D., a dermatologist in West Bloomfield, Michigan. "These chemicals might cause contact dermatitis-the skin right around or underneath the nail can get red, itchy or scaly."

But eyes are also at risk. "The eyes are a sensitive, exposed organ," says Elise Brisco, M.D., an optometrist in Los Angeles and founder of the Rehabilitative Vision Clinic at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. "Bacteria, viruses, allergies, pollen and chemicals all stick to the wet, mucous-y surface which is very absorbent-and what's scary is that the eye is essentially an extension of the brain." Brisco suggests that if you have any pain in or around your eyes, blurred vision, stinging, swelling or redness for more than a few hours after leaving a nail salon, to see your doctor.

Now, take a deep (fume-free) breath: Experts insist that you don't have to ditch your weekly mani and succumb to hiding your bare, chipped nails in shame: "Common sense and precaution says that if it's not necessary to be exposed to toxic chemicals (and it's hard to imagine when it is necessary) then these chemicals should not be in products at all," says Roelofs. "But in the mean time, choose a well-ventilated salon if you're concerned."

Also, be aware of what products the salon you're frequenting is using. "I've seen a tremendous change in the nail industry," says Jin Soon Choi, a manicurist for 20 years and owner of Jin Soon Nail Salon in New York City. "The old style strong-fumed acrylic is almost gone, non-acetone nail polish remover is ubiquitous and there are amazing 3 and 4-free polishes."

By now, with summer almost more than half over, most of us have acquired some sort of tan -- real or fake. Either way, the best thing to pair with slightly bronzed skin is a pink lip. We're talking bright, day-glo, basically neon. This week, we're channeling the super-saturated, matte lip color at DVF and Jil Sander this past spring. Emma Stone and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld have also followed suit, wearing the somewhat shocking shade with an otherwise bare face. (With color this extreme, it's best to keep the rest of your makeup minimal.)

As far as getting a matte finish, color that actually stays AND lips that won't dry out, you have a few options. Lourdes Leon Talks Material Girl Beauty, Well Made Up Women and Red Lipstick

When your mom is Madonna, you're sure to not only inherit good looks but great beauty tricks. And 14-year-old Lourdes "Lola" Leon is quite the makeup maven.

With her raven strands pulled back into a playful ponytail, thick brows perfectly arched, lips dressed in bold red and fingernails painted in a shimmering shade, Lourdes strolled into the Material Girl Beauty launch event and had this beauty editor reconsidering her makeup application routine.

Yet, it all seem to come natural as she revealed that working alongside her mother on the new beauty line, she wanted to get it right down to the body mist notes.

"There were like 100 million samples and some made me want to vomit, but the ones my mom and I thought were the best, I think are nice and women would wear," Lourdes told StyleList. "I'm wearing the Viva Vanilla Lotion and Body Spray...it smells really yummy."

The tween collection embodies that youthful spirit with candy-scented products poured into brightly colored bottles emblazoned with floral print and lace reminiscent of the fingerless gloves Madonna wore in the '80s.

The nail polishes weren't anything like the tacky, watery lacquers I played with as a child -- these went on smoother, thicker and brighter. Lourdes flashed a shiny metallic color named Labryinth that she advised comes out like silver with a second coat. Guilty Conscience, a muddy greige, is another one she "really likes."

While fall's new Smoky & Sexy Eye Palette (smoldering purple, gray and black shadows) is a favorite, Lourdes decided to switch things up and opt for the Soft & Pretty (eye-opening shades of gold, tan and pink) this summer.

"I put the Sandstorm in the crease of my eye, Pink in the middle and Golden Shimmer underneath my eyebrow," she said.

Clearly she's mastered eye makeup, but we had to know the secret behind her saucy pout.

"It's MAC...Russian Red," Lourdes told StyleList.

And you'd be surprised to learn the women (besides her mom), she looks to for beauty inspiration.

"I always thinks Christina Hendricks looks very well made up. Mila Kunis, too," she said. "Kim Kardashian wears an insane amount of makeup but I think she looks great."

We couldn't agree more.

Apply a Primer Moisturizer with Astaxanthin all over your face using a latex free sponge. By using a moisturizer with Astaxanthin you not only hydrate your skin, but also provide your skin a natural sun protection equivalent to an SPF 20 without the chemicals.

Tip: If you are applying a moisturizer or a cream product on someone else it's a good idea to apply the cream on to a metal palette first and then apply it on the client/friend's face. Try to use a Latex-free sponge as some people can be very allergic to latex; the correct tools can make all the difference in obtaining the ideal application!

Using a different sponge apply a Mattifying Anti-Shine Gel to your forehead, nose, and anywhere else you may have shine. Be sure to shake the tube before applying. You can also apply this gel on your eyelids to avoid creasing on the lids due to oiliness.

When choosing an anti-shine product, look for a brand that has a little tint, so when it dries it will not leave an unusual film on your skin. EVE PEARL's Anti-Shine Mattifying Gel comes in two shades: A for light to medium skin, B for tan to dark skin.

You could say that New Orleans-born Francelle Daly is one of the coolest makeup artists in the game right now.
