Should the Groomsmen's Attire Match the Groom's Look?

Getty Images

Q. Does the groomsmen's attire have to mimic the groom's look in formality and style?

A. The answer here is yes and no. The groomsmen should certainly follow in the theme of the wedding, especially complementing the bridesmaids' looks, and maintain the same level of formality. After all, it is that symmetry and continuity of theme that make weddings the special affairs that they are. However, the groomsmen should not mimic the groom exactly. It is the bride and groom's day and they deserve to look special. The wedding party's looks are to complement the couple, not to copy them.

Should the Groom Rent or Buy His Tuxedo?

Q. Is it better to rent a tux or buy one? What are the pros/cons?

A. Renting wedding-day attire is no longer any more acceptable for a groom than it would be for his bride. Most tuxedo rental companies only tailor the sleeves of the jacket and the bottoms of the pants, so they tend to fit poorly. By purchasing your tuxedo or suit, you invest in a piece that will last you for many events to come and be custom-made to fit you perfectly in every possible way. It is also next to impossible to personalize a rented look. After all, it has likely been worn by dozens of grooms at dozens of other weddings before being worn by you. The thing to remember is that a groom's attire is no longer a uniform, it is meant to be unique to his personality and the personality of the event.
