Your daily Starbucks run may do much more than perk you up each morning and set you back five bucks. It may actually protect you from getting skin cancer.

A new study backs up previous research that shows caffeine may be an effective weapon in the fight against skin cancer-the most prevalent type of cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

In the study, which was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, two groups of mice-one genetically modified to block a certain protein called ATR, the other a control group-were exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The researchers found that the genetically-modified mice remained tumor-free for significantly longer and after 19 weeks of UV exposure, had nearly 70 percent fewer tumors than the control group.

MORE: Green tea also has health benefits

The research helps shed some light on how caffeine is able to decrease the risk of sunlight-induced skin cancer. Caffeine appears to inhibit the ATR kinase pathway, which plays a major role in how the body responds to DNA damage brought on by UV radiation. ATR obstructs cell division and allows DNA repair to occur rather than letting damaged cells die.

This sounds like a good thing, but, "not all repairs are successful and some cells can still go on to develop cancer," explains study co-author Allan Conney, the director of the Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research at Rutgers University School of Pharmacy. "The study we did with colleagues at the University of Washington identified the ATR kinase pathway as being inhibited by caffeine." The result? More DNA damaged cells are killed off, potentially preventing non-melanoma (basal or squamous cell) skin cancer from ever developing.

But caffeine doesn't only inhibit this important protein. Caffeine itself also acts as a sunscreen, absorbing harmful UV rays, according to Conney. So will your sunscreen contain a shot of caffeine one day? "I would think that's a real possibility," he says.

QUIZ: How healthy is your skin?

Until that day comes, there's some good news for coffee drinkers: You're already getting some sun protective benefits from your daily cup of joe. A 2007 study of nearly 94,000 women found that those who sipped caffeinated coffee daily had an almost 11 percent lower risk of non-melanoma skin cancer. Women who drank six or more cups of coffee on a daily basis saw a 30 percent reduction in risk.

(To put that in perspective, a venti size at Starbucks is two and a half cups of coffee.)

Just don't skip the sunblock. "Let's put it this way-you shouldn't start depending on your local Starbucks for sun protection," says Dr. Howard Sobel, a cosmetic dermatologist in Manhattan. "The same general rules apply when it comes to sun protection. Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more to all exposed skin. Look for broad-spectrum on the label, as it provides protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating. Avoid tanning beds, and have your skin checked regularly by a dermatologist."
Hyperpigmentation and dark spots have often forced me to layer on cream-to-powder foundation to avoid embarrassing glares. I've also tried fading creams, facial peels and good old cocoa butter to renew my dark skin.

While I've seen improvement over the years, very few skin care products have landed on my desk and produced eye-opening results like Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase Skin Tone Perfecting Serum XK.

This liquid gem is formulated with five key ingredients: Kinetin, the brand's super anti-oxidant plant complex which exfoliates and diminishes fine lines and wrinkles; Sepivinol, a red wine extract that helps to prevent future aging; hyaluronic acid, a known natural moisturizer; Sephiwhite MSH, an inhibitor that blocks pigmentation and SymWhite, a potent lightener that targets UV-induced skin coloring.

While the blend instantly reads impressive, it only took two weeks of applying tiny drops to my face each morning post-cleansing to notice unblemished skin. Discoloration on my forehead and cheeks have lightened and my complexion is supple and radiant, making me feel more confident to step out sans cover-up.
This summer, Australian bodycare line Aesop has landed stateside, setting up shop in Grand Central Terminal -- with three brick and mortar stores to open later this year. In honor of the new Graybar Passage kiosk, the line has collaborated with the contemporary art institution Dia to create a one-of-a-kind travel set available only at this location -- with all profits from the sale of the kit to be donated back to the organization. And in even better news: With every Jet Set kit purchased from its Grand Central location, you'll score two tickets to Dia: Beacon in upstate New York. It's a win-win, really, especially considering all the awesome products this kit contains.

The set -- perfect for summer weekends -- is packed with Aesop classics: Their Gentle Scalp Cleansing Shampoo, Revitalising Hair Sealing Conditioner, Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser and Rind Aromatique Body Balm. The TSA-friendly bottles, with their old-timey apothecary labels, are packed into a small recyclable cardboard box.

The promotion will be effective until they sell out. And the last time we checked they had about 200 tickets still up for grabs. Once you've picked up the kit (and your tickets), you might as well hop a train north to Beacon -- since they depart from Grand Central!
That's exactly what happened to Brooke Burdine after she popped into her local nail salon for her weekly manicure.

"The next morning my boyfriend looked at me and said 'You look like you got punched in the face," says the 25-year-old marketing exec in New York City, who speed dialed her dermatologist. "The skin around my eyes was reddish-black, and also dry, irritated and itchy."

The diagnosis: an allergic shiner. This not-so-common allergic reaction occurs when blood around the eyes is unable to drain so it stays put and causes the appearance of a bar-fight-style black eye.

Usually it's from an out-of-control pollen count that causes sinuses to swell, not from getting your nails done. "The doctor asked me what new products I was using-cleanser, eye cream, makeup, detergent-and I couldn't think of anything in my routine that I'd changed," Burdine says. "But the possibilities seemed endless because he also explained that I could not be allergic to something and then develop an allergy overnight."

After discussing a laundry list of suspects, Burdine's doctor glanced at her freshly painted nails and noted that he has a lot of women come in because of allergic reactions to polish, which are laced with potentially toxic chemicals including formaldehyde.

MORE: 6 signs of a sketchy nail salon

And since Burdine wears contacts and is often touching her eyes, the polish could be the culprit. "That's when I realized that although I've always gone to the same salon and use the same brand of polish, that time I grabbed one from a company I've never used before," she says. Her doctor told her to take the polish off asap and apply Desonide, a prescription steroid cream, around her eyes to reduce the swelling in that area. "In two days I was back to normal," she says.

According to Julia Liou, cofounder of the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative, a public-advocacy group for salon safety, Brooke isn't alone. The fight for safe nail practices and products for both technicians and customers is crucial because of a slew of health hazards -- sure, a freaky black eye is one, but extreme medical conditions such as reproductive issues and cancer may also be real concerns.

Although the dangers of many chemicals used in nail products (including remover, base and top coat as well as polish) are proven and many brands are going 3 and 4-free, experts say there's still good reason to think twice before test-driving a neon pink half-moon manicure.

MORE: 3-free and 4-free nail polish, explained

"Companies are saying they're taking the harmful chemicals out-formaldehyde, toluene and DBP-but no one is regulating whether or not it's true," says Liou, who estimates about 40 percent of polish on the market are 3-free, while the other 60 either aren't or have varying levels of toxic ingredients.

It's this nail industry "he-said, she-said" along with the fact that cosmetic companies aren't required to get the green light on safety from the FDA, and most nail brands don't list ingredients on their bottles like say, shampoo, that has many organizations pushing for the Safe Cosmetics Act.

This bill would demand pre-market safety assessments of all personal care products-not just nail polish. (As of right now, the Safe Cosmetics Act is expected to pass early next year.)

MORE: The Safe Cosmetics Act and what it means for your makeup bag

According to Cora Roelofs, an occupational health researcher at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, who has studied the long-term effects nail chemicals and fumes have on salon workers, many report rashes on their cheeks and hands-possibly as a result of sensitization (like getting an allergy) to acrylic compounds such as ethyl methacrylate, the main ingredient in artificial nail liquid-but all solvents such as isopropyl alcohol as well as acetone can cause rashes just by taking the natural protective oils out of skin. She also adds that nail technicians experience an abundance of respiratory problems including coughing, nose, throat and lung irritation, asthma and wheezing.

Could second-hand nail service fumes be the new second-hand smoke? Clearly, the salon workers exposed to hazardous chemicals and fumes 10 hours a day are at the most risk, but a weekly half-hour polish pit-stop can add up. "A salon might be using 3 and 4-free brands, but there are still so many different kinds of solvents in formulas as well as a lack of fresh air and a lot of dust," says Roelofs.

According to the experts interviewed, Burdine's black eye is definitely not the norm, however, doctors agree that allergic reactions from nail products and services are not only possible, they're common. "Typically, people are most allergic to chemicals in acrylic nails-from the polymers in the nails themselves to the gel and glue-which might be laced with poisonous methyl methacrylate liquid monomers (MMA), but also formaldehyde in nail hardeners and polish as well as fumes from acetone," says D'Anne Kleinsmith, M.D., a dermatologist in West Bloomfield, Michigan. "These chemicals might cause contact dermatitis-the skin right around or underneath the nail can get red, itchy or scaly."

MORE: The best non-toxic nail polishes

But eyes are also at risk. "The eyes are a sensitive, exposed organ," says Elise Brisco, M.D., an optometrist in Los Angeles and founder of the Rehabilitative Vision Clinic at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. "Bacteria, viruses, allergies, pollen and chemicals all stick to the wet, mucous-y surface which is very absorbent-and what's scary is that the eye is essentially an extension of the brain." Brisco suggests that if you have any pain in or around your eyes, blurred vision, stinging, swelling or redness for more than a few hours after leaving a nail salon, to see your doctor.

Now, take a deep (fume-free) breath: Experts insist that you don't have to ditch your weekly mani and succumb to hiding your bare, chipped nails in shame: "Common sense and precaution says that if it's not necessary to be exposed to toxic chemicals (and it's hard to imagine when it is necessary) then these chemicals should not be in products at all," says Roelofs. "But in the mean time, choose a well-ventilated salon if you're concerned."

QUIZ: How healthy does your skin look?

Also, be aware of what products the salon you're frequenting is using. "I've seen a tremendous change in the nail industry," says Jin Soon Choi, a manicurist for 20 years and owner of Jin Soon Nail Salon in New York City. "The old style strong-fumed acrylic is almost gone, non-acetone nail polish remover is ubiquitous and there are amazing 3 and 4-free polishes."

And of course ladies, (you gotta) fight for your right (to a healthy manicure). Take action at safecosmetics.org.
Bethenny Frankel's Skinnygirl empire is getting bigger and bigger!

The tell-it-like-it-is reality star and entrepreneur built a booming brand portfolio consisting of cocktails, books and shapewear, and now she's making her foray into the beauty industry this fall with a skin care and body line, WWD reports.

Frankel has partnered with beauty firm Lotta Luv to offer the masses products that yield honest results.

"[Promises like] 'you're going to look like Heidi Klum in two days' or 'like you had a face-lift' have always bothered me," she told WWD.

The Skinnygirl Face & Body Solutions line will be comprised of four categories -- lip treatments, face solutions, body solutions and gift sets -- and include beauty fix-it staples like a Shimmer Plumping Lip Gloss, Detox Face Mask and Gradual Tanning Body Shimmer. There's also a Skinnygirl Mommy collection with a Cooling Foot Spray, of course.

And you can rest assure that everything has "The Real Housewife's" stamp of approval. "I'm obsessed. I use everything, I named every single product. I created the packaging and the logo," Frankel explained to WWD.

Skinnygirl skin care (all items retail under $15) will roll out to select Wal-Mart stores in November.
For centuries, women have smoothed on this natural gem to hydrate skin, treat acne and reduce wrinkles. Queen Cleopatra was known for indulging in milk and honey baths -- one of the many secrets to her flawless complexion.

"Honey is rather glamorous... it's our liquid gold," says Gretta Monahan, founder of Grettacole salon and spa boutique. "There aren't many things we can pull out of the pantry and put into a bowl or handle with a scent, color and touch that is beautiful."
The style and beauty maven boasts using the simple and smart ingredient to perfect spa treatments including, a honey and jojoba oil body scrub and sweet honey and apple facial tonic.

"We want to be pampered, we want it to be effective and we want it to be natural," adds Monahan.
Brands like Burt's Bees, Caudalie and Fresh have gathered a loyal following for their honey-infused goodies, and beauty manufacturers are whipping up creations inspired by the natural humectant.
What do you get for the man that has everything? A $100,000 razor with sapphire blades of course.

Fortunately, the Iridium razor, Zaffiro's latest invention, was just released. Made out of Iridium metal, sapphire and rocket engine technology, this razor will outshine any drugstore purchase. If $100,000 seems an unreasonable price for a razor, get this: Iridium, the strong metal that makes up the handle of the razor, is made out of meteorites and is even more rare than platinum, the sapphire blade will never rust, and there is complimentary resharpening.

Only 99 of the Iridium razors were made so if you have some extra cash laying around, why not purchase a grooming product worthy of display?
$100,000 Sapphire Razor | Wishlist originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 11:22:00 EST.
With summer comes the full-on barrage of bugs -- and the subsequent bites. While there are ways to fight back, most bug sprays leave little to be desired: Arms and legs that stick to each other (and everything else), the mysteriously toxic smell... Yet, there are plenty of natural options (DEET and Paraben-free) that get the job done, and actually smell good in the bargain. Here, the insect repellents we'll be keeping close at hand this summer.

Balm: Badger Anti-Bug Balm, $10, badgerbalm.com. This is super easy to apply and has the most amazing lemony scent -- plus the small tin fits in any bag.

Lotion: California Baby Everyday Lotion Summer Blend, $14, californiababy.com. A mix of lemongrass, vitamin E and aloe vera simultaneously hydrate skin and soothe existing bites.

Spray: Jason Quit Bugging Me Insect Repellant, $10, jason-natural.com. A light-weight, non-greasy formula -- with a subtle, non-cloying smell.

Oils: We all know that citronella (lemongrass) is a key ingredient in the war on bugs, but there are other essential oils that fight mosquitos just as well. Lavender, basil, geranium and neem oils are just as effective. You're essentially changing the taste of your skin, which will make the bugs... just not that into you.
Bugging Out: Natural Insect Repellents That Really Work originally appeared on StyleList on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 10:30:00 EST. Before you shell out for crushed pearls or break the bank for raindrops distilled from the Amazon, you should know what these exotic skin care ingredients really accomplish -- very little. Luxe skin care additives such as diamond dust and quartz liquid crystals may sound enticing but often lack the ability to produce real results. When it comes to formulating truly efficacious skin care solutions, experts rely on a careful selection of key ingredients to brighten, smooth, plump and clear complexions -- high concentrations of proven ingredients like retinol, antioxidants and vitamins are what it takes to improve skin health -- no more, no less.

Read on to find out what made it onto the ingredient A-List.

Retinol
Retinol targets the signs of aging by stimulating cellular renewal, boosting collagen production and improving skin elasticity. The result? A visible reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and increase in dermal density and firmness. Typically, for a skin-saver to be topically effective, it should reach a concentration of at least 0.7 percent. While most products available over the counter contain 0.4 percent, Ossential Radical Night Repair Plus contains a 1.0 percent concentration of retinol -- 2 and a half times the industry average.

Salicylic Acid
An absolute must for those with acne-prone skin, using a topical salicylic acid treatment not only sweeps away excess oil, but also removes dead skin cells on the surface for instantly clearer skin. I love ZO Skin Health Offects TE-Pads made with 2 percent Salicylic Acid -- the highest over-the-counter concentration. Used daily, the ultra-effective pads exfoliate skin and control breakouts by reducing oiliness.

Lactic Acid
This multi-tasking skin-saver is proven to help exfoliate rough patches and resurface the skin for a firmer, smoother looking finish. Known for its intense hydrating properties and ability to stimulate collagen production, lactic acid leaves skin softer and more youthful looking. One of my top lactic acid-infused picks? ZO Skin Health Oraser Body Emulsion. It not only softens and moisturizes dry skin, but also reduces the appearance of dark spots.
In celebrating its 160th anniversary, Kiehl's is giving itself the biggest gift yet: a spa.

Nestled on the second floor of a new retail store in New York City's Upper East Side neighborhood, Kiehl's Spa 1851 is an extension of the exemplary service the skin and hair care brand is known for.

"It's actually been an idea I've kicked around for the past six to seven years," Chris Salgardo, president of Kiehl's USA, tells StyleList. "It was more of a question of when was the right time. Opening free-standing stores was the priority for us before launching anything else. About two years ago, I saw the location and knew it aligned with what today's shopper wants which is convenience."

The Spa 1851 experience adds a touch of luxury to the quirky, yet cool environment synonymous with the brand's East Village location. "Anything that you would imagine a Kiehl's spa to be, we've nailed it on the head," says Salgardo.

Guests enter through a private entrance off 64th Street and check in with concierge before being escorted to a lounge decked out with wall-to-wall windows. Chandeliers hang in the three treatment rooms and a rainforest photo mural by photographer and artist David LaChapelle liven up the walls. Other spa bonuses include slipping into eco-friendly robes and limited-edition Havianas and iPads to peruse while you wait.

It was important to follow in the apothecary history, so each session starts with a personal consultation similar to one you would get at the pharmacy years ago. Treatments include the signature welcome lavender chest massage. Skin specialists create custom facial and body services that cater to both men and women, and technicians will add extra ingredients right on the spot at no extra cost. There's also a grooming station with two barber chairs where guys can indulge in cuts, shaves and trims.

Prices range from $15 for a mustache trim to $330 for the Ultimate Kiehl's Body Restoration -- which the company's president says will have you walk out of the spa feeling like a totally different person.

When we asked Salgardo what's one of his favorite services, he revealed that he's a big massage fan who loves Creme de Corps. "I never had someone work on my hands and nails like that!" he says.

Expert beauty advice for the city girl to protect your skin from the environment. Photo: Alamy

They say that the harried pace of city life can harden you. But did you know it can prematurely age your skin, too?

According to New York dermatologists, Dr. Eric S. Schweiger and Dr. David E. Bank, urban settings are rife with factors that rapidly dull skin, coax out wrinkles and splatter complexions with the type of pigmentation spots that accelerate the look of your years.

Now as a city girl, I don't like the sound of this one bit.

Not only do I have to deal with a cost of living that makes a cardboard box apartment seem plausible, but now I have to worry about looking old before my time?

I asked the good doctors to explain the city's biggest culprits that speed up the hands of mother nature's clock, and tips for mitigating and even reversing the symptoms into beautiful, healthy-looking skin.

So if you pound pavement daily in any of the country's major cities, put down that Blackberry and steal a New York minute to learn how to protect and recharge your skin against the less-than-glamorous parts of city life.

City sun rays are more dangerous, because they're sneakier. While non-city folk usually experience their strongest daily sun exposure in a predictable pattern that hits the driver's side half of the face and body, city dwellers often unknowingly bathe completely in the age-inducing rays. "We're walking everywhere, and we're constantly being exposed to the sun," says Schweiger. Add to that the fact that most people are out and about during the most intense light during the morning and lunch hour, and you've got the perfect recipe for premature wrinkles. Make applying a daily sunscreen lotion for the face and body of at least SPF 30 part of your grooming routine, and you'll quash one of aging's most dangerous triggers.

Pollution taxes skin, and requires deep cleansing. "Think about all the car pollution, construction zone soot and other allergens and dirt that gets kicked up by subways, people and cars daily. Don't sleep on an unwashed face!" says Schweiger. For a more intensive cleaning, look to foaming formulations or a tool like the Clarisonic to loosen and remove layers of pollution that invisibly melt onto the skin during the day. Schweiger recommends Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser or Purpose Moisturizing Foaming Cleanser for dry skins, while I can personally attest to the addictively squeaky-clean results left in the wake of a Clarisonic cleansing.

Stick to smoke-free areas. Cities like Los Angeles, Boston and New York may ban smoking in enclosed public places, but you can still ask for a light in destinations like Dallas, Las Vegas and New Orleans. What you may not know: even if you're not the one doing the smoking, your skin is paying the price. "Smoke is one of the worst things for your skin. It accelerates skin aging and leads to early sagging and wrinkling," says Bank of the vapors that settle onto skin like pollution. "The best thing is to avoid being in smoking areas, and to stop smoking if you're a smoker yourself in order to prevent damage."

Try allantoin to soothe city-weary skin. Found in the comfrey plant, allantoin stimulates skin cell regeneration for a softer, smoother and more luminous complexion. "Allantoin is very helpful in protection from environmental conditions and helps the outer layers of your skin shed, which is beneficial in a city lifestyle that is filled with pollution," says Bank. H2O+'s line of cleansers, masks and toners contain the healing ingredient, as does Obagi Clenziderm M.D. Therapeutic Moisturizer.

Lack of sleep and stress takes a toll on skin. The dizzying pace of city life combined with high expectations for a demanding career usually makes for little sleep and lots of coffee. The resulting stress triggers inflammation to spike in the body, which is the cause of aging. And without sufficient sleep, the body doesn't have time to heal during the necessary regenerative phase. "Establishing stress management and good sleep habits are critical to looking younger," says Bank.

Antioxidants are the best prescription against aging. The age-inducing free radicals caused by all the different factors of city life can be 'eaten' or even reversed by the presence of antioxidants. Diet-wise, you an find the powerful fighters in richly colored fruits and veggies, like blueberries, strawberries, pomegranate and kale. Antioxidants are also present in skin care ingredients like Vitamins A, C, E, and are most effectively absorbed through serum form at bed time. Loading both your diet and skin care routine with the powerhouse element can harbor dramatic anti-aging results, says both dermatologists.

Stick to a routine, day and night. All the fancy ingredients in the world can't compete with simple routine if they're not applied consistently, says Bank. A twice daily cleansing and protective moisturization is needed morning and night to protect skin that is under constant assault from the city environment. "To keep skin healthy and young when living in the city, it takes more work and dedication," says Bank. "It's about sticking to a routine morning and night, including cleansing and sun protection. The most important thing for city dwellers is to make sure they take care of their skin so the skin has god natural immune function."

Now that you know how to best protect your skin, here's why you should use oil in your hair.
Smog & The City: How Urban Life Can Age Your Skin originally appeared on StyleList on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 11:00:00 EST. From small-time apothecary to global conglomerate, the journey of Kiehl's Since 1851 has been a remarkable one.

It began as a self-described "European-style" pharmacy in New York's East Village and this summer, the American-based cosmetics company is celebrating its 160th anniversary through a retrospective exhibit at its flagship store.

The exhibit will be open to the public until August 31 and will highlight photos, videos and artifacts like Kiehl's original apothecary furnishings and bottles, plus guests can record video messages or take photos of themselves to adorn the venue's photo wall. There will also be a personal consultation area to get expert advice on your skin care routines. Talk about service and celebration!

Kiehl's has held our hand through dark under-eye circles and chapped lips, made our skin glow and our wrinkles diminish. Happy 160th anniversary to one of our most essential brands!
Since the seventh grade, I had been a loyal devotee of the Clinique 3-Step Skin Care System. But after moving to gritty New York City from rural Vermont, my skin took a major beating. I knew I needed to try something that not only cleansed my face, but wouldn't irritate or burn.

Cate Blanchett -- a fashion icon with impeccable skin -- is the global ambassador for SK-II. So, when I happened upon the brand's latest product, Cellumination Mask-In Lotion, I barely hesitated. You'd have to be crazy not to want radiant skin like Cate's!

I applied the iridescent liquid -- which feels cool at first and dries a bit tacky -- in the morning and before bed. Within a couple of uses, I noticed that some of my red spots were drastically clearer and my skin actually felt smoother. After one week of use, a stranger approached me to comment on my complexion -- something that hasn't happened since I faithfully started my skin care routine years ago.

I guess I'm closer to getting that red carpet glow.

From scrubs to cleansing brushes and antiaging retinoid treatments, today's complexions are often put through demanding paces to achieve that most prized, glowing complexion.

Yet our skin has never looked more red, or ached with more sensitivity.

And it's no coincidence. According to experts, all of those popular high-tech potions and procedures contribute to a gradual wearing down of the outer layers of skin, leading to an uptick in the number of people who suffer from continual redness and sensitivity issues.

"I am seeing an increased number of patients in my practice with stressed out skin from overexfoliation. In these cases, exfoliation can be too much of a good thing," says Washington, D.C., dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi.

Facial tools that are too aggressive, scrubs with jagged granules and simply treating skin too often are all common causes of redness. Yet the sneakiest trigger is overlayering too many ingredients on the skin -- which is all too easy to do with the proliferation of moisturizers and serums that seemingly pack everything in but the kitchen sink, says Dr. Anne Chapas, assistant clinical professor at New York University School of Medicine.

"Anyone can have sensitive skin after combining products with similar irritation profiles, or just using too many products in general. The big culprits are Retin A and retinol, alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids and irritating fragrance or preservatives," says Chapas.

If your skin is flushing red with sensitivity, you can stage an intervention by taking a week off from using exfoliating products like cleansing brushes and retinol. Use a mild cleanser like Cetaphil and a fragrance-free moisturizer during this "detox" time.

Then slowly introduce your favorite products back to your routine, one at a time, and taking careful note if you react to any of them. If so, back off use. It's actually better for you in the long term, advises Chapas.

"It's important to realize that whatever gains can be made by exfoliating or using a great product are going to be nullified if the skin is in a constant state of stress, which can actually accelerate the aging process, or make acne worse," says Chapas.

Yikes. You need not tell us twice.

Yet the beauty industry has taken notice of all our overzealous scrubbing and treating, with a plethora of products created solely to ease the redness and sensitivity our ambitious skin-care routines have left behind.

When StyleList caught up with Bare Escentuals CEO Leslie Blodgett at a QVC press event recently, she divulged that the brand's next big launch, coming in August, will be a skin cream formulated to target red skin.

"Red skin is an issue our customers have told us is a chief concern for them," Blodgett told StyleList. "We want to provide not just Bare Minerals to minimize it, but a skin-care solution as well."

But a word of caution: First, you'll want to determine if the redness you're experiencing is due to sensitivity or the medical condition rosacea.

Affecting over 16 million Americans, rosacea is marked by clusters of small bumps, spidery facial veins and redness localized to the center nose, inner cheeks and chin. On the other hand, classic sensitivity redness can be found anywhere on the face, and is not automatically accompanied by bumps or veins.

Whether you have rosacea or sensitivity, you may find relief from the products in the gallery below -- but it's important to visit a dermatologist if you suspect rosacea as a possibility, as the condition can grow more stubborn and severe over time without the guided treatment of an expert.

Growing up there were very few things my mother loathed more than dry, ashy skin. Hence, you will be hard pressed to find me out and about with a complexion that appears dull and dehydrated.

Yet, beauty counters and shelves still aren't fully stocked with products that moisturize without leaving behind a grayish hue on dark skin. So when I come across a lotion like The Body Shop Duo Body Butter that gives me a nice sheen, I tend to use every bit of it.

Like the name implies, this goodie is made up of two formulations: a light moisture blended with shea butter, cocoa butter, and nut oil to smooth onto areas like the stomach and arms for sheer conditioning, and a rich moisture with the same ingredients plus, beeswax and babassu oil for a heavier mixture to tackle rougher spots like elbows, knees and ankles.

I've been using the Duo Body Butter in Vanilla for one month and am amazed at how soft my skin feels as well as the overall healthy appearance. But what would make this "one pot wonder" even better is if it were available in gallon size.

The Body Shop Duo Body Butter, $16, available at The Body Shop stores and online in July 2011.
The Body Shop Body Butter Duo: Beauty Spotlight originally appeared on StyleList on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 16:00:00 EST.
When the mercury rises, conventional wisdom says to wear as little clothing as possible. But a new crop of "sun-protective" offerings from retailers such as Uniqlo and Mott 50 aims to dispel the myth that less is more when it comes to summer garb.

"Believe it or not, clothes -- like sunscreens -- have ratings and instead of the previous SPF, which was for UVB only, now there is the UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, which is for UVB and UVA," explains Long Island-based dermatologist Kenneth Mark, referring to the two types of ultraviolet light.

This Ultraviolet Protection Factor is the selling point of brands such as Coolibar, which offers a wide range of apparel and accessories intended to shield customers from the damaging effects of the sun. "One of the greatest failures of sunscreen is that it's only intended to block UVB," says Michael Hubsmith, Coolibar's executive vice president of merchandising. "UVA is the more deadly of the two ultraviolet radiations."

So does donning a UPF T-shirt really offer an advantage over slapping on traditional sunblock? According to Dr. Mark, yes. Sun-protective clothing can offer significantly more protection than sunscreen in the sense that "there is no variability -- the only variable for whether the clothing will protect is if you wear it," he says. "With sunblock, you have to be using the correct one, apply the correct amount, reapply frequently, be aware of sweating and swimming and other water issues, and apply it 20 minutes prior to exposure. Most people do not
put enough on and do not put it on early enough before going outside."

Hubsmith filled us in on Coolibar's method for making each piece sun-protective. "We work with proprietary fabrics we've developed that use the main ingredient from sunscreens, and they're incorporated into the fiber so they can never wash or wear off," he said. "It's mostly titanium dioxide, but we also have a very successful zinc oxide fabric that we call ZnO SUNTECT. If you ever look at sunscreen, you'll see the primary active ingredients are titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, or a combination of the two."

Hubsmith says to ensure that all garments are as sun-protective as possible -- meaning a UPF rating of 50+ -- Coolibar conducts an AATCC 183 test, an internationally recognized procedure used by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. The garment is then put through a wash test that simulates the life cycle of a garment, estimated at 40 machine washings and 100 hours of light fading. Afterward, it undergoes a second AATCC 183 test and is rated. "So every garment we sell will be as UV-protected the last day you wear it as it was the first day," he says.

"Most of us have grown up with the notion that when it's hot and sunny you take clothing off," says Hubsmith. "And now we're trying to change people's behavior and say you should be putting clothing on, for two reasons: one, for UV radiation. The other is that if you shade your skin, you're actually going to stay cooler."

Will you be trying out UPF clothing this summer?
If going to the gym just for the sake of getting in shape doesn't motivate you, maybe this will: the London-based fitness chain Gymbox is now offering classes specifically designed to get you the celebrity derriere of your choice.

The gym offers clients the choice of four celebrities with larger than life posteriors: Beyoncé Knowles, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Minogue, and - the subject of more recent hubbub - Pippa Middleton.

Trainers wearing shirts emblazoned with the names of their respective celebrities lead the six-week "Yummy Bummy" classes, which cater their techniques to customers' desired goals. The Pippa class incorporates more pilates, while dance and toning exercises help achieve Beyoncé's more athletic and rather ample rear.

"I would say it's probably closest to a publicity stunt," said Herbert Schmale, a personal training manager at the Equinox fitness chain, of Gymbox's promotion. "But can it happen? Are there certain exercises you can do to target areas differently? ... Of course."

"Everybody's body is built differently," he added, pointing to the role of genetics in determining people's body types.

What do you think -- whose caboose would you sweat over?

Meanwhile, catch the video below to hear what Kim Kardashian has to say about her infamous posterior.
They may say that death and taxes are the only guarantees in life, but women know the electric jolts of pain during a bikini wax fare a close third.

So when a dainty little box crossed my desk cheerfully promising an "ouchless 'down there' hair removal" experience while waxing, my eyebrow raised in both intrigue and doubt.

Developed by anesthesiologist Dr. Edna Ma at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, the BareEase & Cream kit includes a Lidocaine-based numbing cream and -- get ready for this -- an accompanying pink latex thong.

Instructions are to apply a thin layer of the aloe and jojoba-infused blend to the area that will be waxed 30 to 45 minutes before your treatment, and then to slip on the protective pepto-colored thong while going about your business -- until it's time to take care of business.

"The latex panty works in two ways: To keep your clothes mess-free and to segregate the cream from air, allowing for maximum absorption of the numbing cream into the bikini area," Dr. Ma tells me, adding that she plans to develop a non-latex version in the near future for people allergic to the stretchy material.

With the maximum four percent concentration of Lidocaine that is legally allowed to be sold over the counter contained in the blend, the name of the ingredient instantly jogged memories of the much-publicized horror story a few years back of a young woman who died of toxicity after a spa had her prep for a laser hair removal treatment by slathering Lidocaine cream all over both of her legs.

I relayed my safety concerns to the board-certified doctor, who says the amount of Lidocaine contained in the .3 ounce tube is completely safe.

"It all comes down to dosage. You can overdose on almost any given medication -- including vitamins and Tylenol -- with a high enough dose. I've intentionally packaged the cream in a small, single-use quantity so that if you ate, drank or ingested the entire tube, you would be well within the safety limits of the medication," says Ma.

While I had no plans of making a meal out of the concoction, I did want to put it to the test.

So off I went with Lidocaine and latex in tow to New York's Stark Waxing Studio, where I bravely booked a Brazilian wax -- the 'everything off' from front to back, save for an optional 'landing strip' concept that the J Sisters first brought stateside years ago.

Yes, that means the cream is entirely safe to put directly on and around your lady parts. And as such, I decided to go the full monty (pun intended) to really give the bold claims a true run for the money.

Following the instructions, I spread the light lotion-like anesthetic all over the areas that were to be treated, making sure to leave behind a thin film of the odorless, teal-colored preparation. I then sealed the deal with the snug latex thong, and took off for my appointment feeling like I had slipped into a day in the life of Samantha Jones.

The immediate mushy feeling of latex married to cream made me gingerly take wide steps, like a three-year-old wearing Pull-Ups a size too big. As I walked down the busy sidewalk of Ninth Avenue with taxis honking in the background and pedestrians scurrying through the crosswalks, I was acutely aware of anyone who so much as looked my way -- and I wondered if it was because they knew what naughty experiment I was up to.

Thankfully, the smooshy sensation dissipated after about five minutes, and I once again regained my confident stride -- and dignity. The instructions say that you may feel a mild tingling sensation as the active ingredient goes to work, but I felt nothing - and wondered if that meant the product was doing anything at all.

After I checked in at the waxing studio, I made a beeline to the ladies room to wipe off what remained of the cream, and to discreetly dispose of the protective thong cover, which rolled down like a clammy swimsuit bottom.

The moment of truth had arrived.

After I laid back on the table and esthetician Lura Jones spread sticky seaweed green French wax on my skin, I could feel the enveloping warmth, and instantly assumed confirmation that the cream hadn't worked. I felt my hopes drop, and the wax hadn't even begun.

Then Jones gently pulled my skin taut, lifting the edge of one of the pieces of wax with her other hand -- and I instinctively braced for the slash of pain to come right before she let 'er rip.

Except there was no pain.

And immediately after, another rip. And again, no pain!

As she drew closer to more sensitive areas, I kept anticipating that the next section would register that familiar 'ouch!' and ache, but I was only met with what could be described as a faint tinge of prickles at worst. It was by leaps and bounds the most manageable wax of my life.

Jones suggested that next time I come in with one side numbed, and one side untreated, to truly feel the difference in pain level. I thought this sounded like an idea that someone who isn't getting waxed would have.

As ethereal as my experience was, there's one drawback: The kit costs $25, and is made for one application. My realistic side tried to nudge Dr. Ma to give a little, to perhaps relinquish that any extra cream could be capped shut and used a second time. However, the doctor was adamant that the kit was only safe and sanitary for a single use.

So here's what it comes down to: Is a pain-free bikini wax worth an additional $25 to you?

Let's just say I'm tossing those extra pennies into the piggy bank from here on in.

Jessica Biel may be one of Hollywood's most strikingly good-looking stars, but when it comes to her beauty routine she keeps it pretty simple.

The 29-year-old Revlon spokesmodel dished to our friends over at BellaSugar that while anti-aging products are definitely on her mind she's a bit of a "'fraidy cat when it comes to anything really aggressive."

"So at this point I'm pretty much [doing] sunscreen, hats, and moisturizing," says Biel.

What exactly makes up the "A-Team" actress' beauty arsenal? Read on for a sneak peek inside!

Dove soap: "One piece of advice was from my friend's beautiful French mother, who literally only ever washed her face with Dove soap and water and she has the most beautiful skin. And I'm looking at her going, 'Have I been messing this up my whole life. . . buying all these beautiful products and I just needed Dove soap - what?!' So I've heard that bit of beauty advice, and then of course - sleep, water, hydrate!"

Gray shadow: "A gray color works for anybody's eyebrows. And it doesn't turn your eyebrows orange. . . I was tipped off by a makeup artist that gray works for blonds, for brunettes, for redheads."

Revlon, of course: "I use the Grow Luscious [mascara]. And I use the eye shadow palettes, which I love - the natural palette. You can layer the colors on top of each other so you can go from day to night really easily. Also, the ColorBurst lip glosses I love. There's a color in there called Peach Petal, which is a beautiful natural color for the day. I usually prefer more of a natural color on the lips."

Essential Oils: "Oils I think have been really important for my beauty routine. I eat a lot of coconut oil a lot of coconut butter. [I also like] fish oils for omega-3. I think it's important for a beauty routine."
