The active ingredient in a popular glaucoma drug called Lumigan has been found by doctors to have an unexpected side effect: Making eyelashes grow thicker, longer, and twice as fast. "This is a real blockbuster, but there is a lot more research needed to find out how it works and what the other side effects are long-term," says Dr. David Colbert, Founder of New York Dermatology Group. Lumigan's parent company, Allergan (they also make Botox), is conducting clinical trials to find out how safe it may be to prescribe the drug for eyelash growth only, and expect FDA clearance to do so in early 2009.
