Coarse Hair: How To Style Highly Textured & Coarse Hair

If your hair is highly textured (translation: lots and lots of curls), it often has a mind of its own. One day it's frizzing; the next it's lacking shine.

Dry and fuzzy, untamed and unmanageable: it's the hair you love to hate. But when it's perfectly coifed and completely under control, highly textured hair is undeniably sexy and the envy of many.

Ted Gibson, celebrity stylist and Hair Basics experts, says to keep this hair type from spiraling out of control, it's imperative to shampoo less. "Women with this type of hair are not too concerned with oily hair. Sometimes natural oils are better for this type of hair. Shampooing once a week helps with that," he notes.

And because this hair type tends to be on the dry side, conditioning daily is essential. "Every time you wet your hair, use a little bit of conditioner," says Gibson. "This will moisturize and give it the conditioning that it needs." A deep conditioning treatment is also recommended to replenish, restore and rehydrate-all of which will help with overall manageability.

While most of us go months without a cut, Gibson is firm on this hair type getting trimmed every four to six weeks. "Highly textured hair tends to get frayed on the ends more easily," says Gibson, making it appear untidy and undefined. As for the cut, Gibson says to opt for layers over a blunt cut. "You want there to be different variants and lengths so that you have a lot of fullness and sexiness."

When styling very curly hair, choose products that are more moisturizing and less drying. Lightweight styling creams, shine serums and leave-in conditioners will help define the curl, control frizz and enhance shine. Styling gels are also an option (and a product many women with this hair type swear by), but make sure to look for one that offers light and flexible hold so the hair looks and feels soft, not stiff and crunchy.

After applying styling products, allow the hair to air dry or use a diffuser. Once the hair is fully dry, you can use a small barrel curling iron to further define, smooth and separate the curl.

For even more tips on styling highly textured hair, check out our video (above) with Ted Gibson, who walks you through each curl-shaping step. Or, click through the gallery below for a visual step-by-step.

Hair Basics: Highly Textured Hair
Are your curls spiraling out of control? Star stylist Ted Gibson gives you tips on how to tame them.

Hair Basics: Highly Textured Hair

It's the hair everyone wants (voluminous curls) but the one that those who have it, hate (or slightly dislike at times). Between frizz, dryness and lack of shine, it can be difficult to maintain. Here, star stylist Ted Gibson offers tips on how to easily style (and tame) that misbehaving mane.

Hair Basics: Highly Textured Hair

Highly textured hair has a tendency to be dry, which makes it appear dull. To add moisture and shine, Gibson says to mix one part gel with one part shine lotion and apply it all over the hair. Allow the hair to air dry or use a diffuser to keep curls under control.

TIP: Never use a standard blow dryer on highly textured hair (unless you are straightening it). The uncontrolled airflow will cause curls to frizz and loose their shape. The diffuser attachment distributes heat gently and evenly over the hair, keeping curls under control.

Hair Basics: Highly Textured Hair

To define and separate the curl even more, Gibson likes to use a small barrel curling iron. Working in sections, open the barrel of the iron and wrap the hair around it, leaving the ends of the hair out. Leaving the ends straight, says Gibson, "Creates a more natural looking curl." After curling, gently pull each individual curl apart for added softness.

PRO TIP: Always make sure the hair is 100-percent dry before using heating tools; otherwise they can dry and scorch the hair.

Hair Basics: Highly Textured Hair

Spray the hair with a lightweight, flexible hold hairspray to finish. This keeps flyaways under control and adds a final touch of shine.

PRO TIP: The more you touch textured hair the more it frizzes. Once styled, do your best to keep your hands off your hair.

That's just another tip on long curly hair. What about the rest of us with shorter curly hair? There's rarely anything to be found for us on how to style short and curly!

I've found a lot of help from the girls on youtube. Just search "natural hair care" or "big chop" or something like that. Tons of ladies are on there sharing their haircare tips and giving reviews on products.

I too have short, curly, coarse, funky hair and there's just no hope for it. I use a good conditioner but my hair grows big, not long and it's bound to poke out some guy's eye it so darn wiry sometimes. Thank goodness my daughter got nice hair. But seriously, I don't know what to do with my hair. It doesn't matter how much I pay for a hair cut or where I go, it's just been a lifetime battle. But all the little ol' ladies at church love my hair. Terrific.

I have curly hair and my hair never gets that big! All he did was make her hair look larger and the curls less defined. I personally hate when my hair gets large like that, I tend to use herbal essences totally twisted mousse and some hairspray and let it air dry so then my hair doesn't get so frizzy but it doesn't get all crunchy.

I have natural, nappy hair. Every night (without fail!) I use a leave-in conditioner, put it up into 6 or 7 French braids, and wear a nylon cap. In the morning, I just take the braids down, shake it, and it's ready to go. I grew up using relaxers and never really took the time to work with my natural hair. Now I can't believe I ever wore my hair any other way. Black hair is AWESOME... if you know what to do with it!

I thought that models hair was perfect the way it was, not to mention she was absolutely stunning. . I think she's beautiful both before and after, but I do like the natural look of before better. For you chicks out there with short hair that has curls, same thing I like the natural kinda wild curly look. It's the way God wanted it to be and it looks hot.

I so agree with u. Also I'm looking at the other comments on here it's a shame that some people still call their hair nappy. That word is insulting, it's tightly curly woolly hair. Calling there hair nappy is insulting what God gave them.

Yay for curls! Growing up, I, like a lot of curly-haired girls, wanted straight hair like my friends had but I finally decided to stop fighting it and start working with what I have and I LOVE my curly hair! I agree about Pantene Conditioner (although some people say that it's ultimately bad for your hair?) and I shampoo very seldom. I've had good luck when getting my hair cut when I find a stylist that also has curly hair because they know first hand what I'm up against. A good haircut makes the world of difference! Also, after towel drying my hair, combing it out and putting styling product on (not too close to the roots), my hair gets less frizzy if I don't touch it much until it's completely dry. Then I touch up with a curling iron as needed and then finish with a light weight hairspray. I'm not sure if this will work on super curly ethnic hair though. Mine is more like Julia Roberts hair in Pretty Woman (only example I can think off right now). Oh! and I love the anti-frizz, glossing products out there. Just don't over-do them.
