Hair Basics: Quick Tips to Add Volume

Could your strands use a little extra oomph? Celebrity hairstylist Danielle Caputo shares and easy trick for adding quick volume to your hair. The process looks a little complicated, but once you've got it down you'll have big, lush locks, in minutes.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Gather the top section of your hair like you're creating a Mohawk, then fasten it with a hair clip.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Gather the rest of the hair back into a ponytail. This will divide the hair up into easy sections for you to style.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Now that the rest of the hair is pulled back, you can unclip the top section to start adding volume. You will ultimately be dividing the top section into three smaller sections, each of which you will spray first with hairspray, comb through with a fine tooth comb, curl back with a wide barrel curling iron, and clip them into place to hold the curl.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

TIP: Hold the curling iron at the base of each curl, and then feed hair into the curl. This method will build more volume than the reverse (and more common) method of curling the hair from ends to roots.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

This is what your head should look like when all three top sections have been curled and clipped. Hello, faux-hawk!

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Section the ponytail into two (if your hair is thick, do three sections). Spray each section, comb it through, and then curl using the same method described previously.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Help the curls set by cooling them with air from your hair dryer, using the cool setting (or button) to help accelerate the process. Caputo recommends blowing the air in the direction of the curls. "Doing it against the the curls will cause the hair to frizz up," she says.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Once the curls have cooled off, take pins and ponytail out, then flip hair over and muss it up at the roots with your fingers.

Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Spray with a little finishing spray, and there you have it, shiny, voluminous waves.

If you've got thin, limp hair or just want extra body there is a much easier trick. After washing your hair towel it but leave it very damp. Comb your hair into your normal style. Flip your head upside-down and blow-dry your hair.

To be honest... she looked better before, now she looks goofy.... like a caricature.

Her hair looks MUCH cooler with it pinned up and pulled back into a ponytail. They should have tried to work that into a style. If not, then the before looks better.

I love the results except it is unrealistic b/c I just tried it and the damn curls rolls wouldn't stay still (they would fall apart as soon as I pinned them down). We are not all hairstylists and it is not easy. I tried the perfect blow out too and that didn't work out too well (my hair didn't look like it was blown out!!!). AOL, please put up videos that are actually doable by normal folks like me.

I really would love to try it but just by looking at it, it wont work because my hair is naturally frizzy and curly so i would have to flat iron it first thennnnn do these steps which is wayy too time consuming (and a lot of heat on my hair). I hate when i see videos and they use people that already have naturally straight thick hair. Just like skin commercials when their skin is already naturally clear..pretty unfair the way i see it....

In the "before" picture her hair looks naturally gorgeous and healthy and it frames her pretty face. In "after" picture all you notice is what looks like tacky hair extensions and her face gets lost in the mess.

I genuinely think this lady has no idea what she's doing. You get better ideas and looks off of Youtube. Seriously. D|

WHAT???? She's naturally beautiful so she doesn't have to go all out to look better. If you fluff up the hair on a typical american cow, it's still a cow.

i really thought this girl looked better before too. she has beautiful thick hair. they should have done this demonstration on someone with thin hair... & to be honest, the article was misleading. the title says "adding volume'. the lady doing the demo states at the end about adding waves.

Thats what I'm saying. I have thin shoulder length hair. How do I my hair more voluminous if I don't have a lot of thick long hair?

my hair is like the girl in the video, her hair isnt even that thick (same as mine). the volume was added to the bottom part of her hair because when its long and straight it can look thin. whoever cant use a curling iron like that and/or pin the hair down is retarded. it was simple and the waves do make your hair look fuller, i know because i pin curl my hair very often. but i think some teasing should have been done to the crown.

My hair was flat and my ends used to be dead most of the time.

I was referred Shielo Hair Products by a friend and I after trying it for a few weeks, I absolutely love it. Specifically, the Shielo Volume Conditioner. My hair looks more full and healthy. I used to lose two handfulls of hair in the shower and now I can barely fill up one hand. My hair is smoother and softer. It even still looks good after using the blow dryer and curling iron on it. I love the way that the conditioner leaves my hair feeling clean without stripping all of the natural oils out.

My hair isn't frizzy anymore either. On top of the way this product makes my hair look and feel, the conditioner smells great. My hair smells fresh and clean all day long.
