Hair Basics: Trimming Your Own Bangs

Trimming your bangs is easy! Save yourself a salon visit with these simple techniques, courtesy of Danielle Caputo, celebrity hair stylist. You hair grows about a half inch every month - so if you have precise bangs, you'll need to trim them pretty frequently.

    Peter Buckingham for AOL

Brush hair back to make it easier to section out the bangs.

    Peter Buckingham for AOL

Use a fine-tooth comb to section your bangs in a triangle section. Start at the top of the bangs, and then brush downwards.

    Peter Buckingham for AOL

Use the comb to section the bangs in half, into two different parts. Slide fingers forward down one of the sections the section, leaving visible about a half an inch of hair - only the jagged ends that need to be cut.

    Peter Buckingham for AOL

Instead of cutting the hair straight across, angle the scissors upwards to cut the hair an angle. This will create a soft, clean line.

    Peter Buckingham for AOL

Start on the first section; once you're done cutting that, move on to the second section, making sure the sections match in length.

    Peter Buckingham for AOL

In 5 easy steps, you have perfectly trimmed bangs. Do try this at home!

I think the shaggy bangs are way prettier.

I've been trimming my own bangs for years. They usually come out pretty good although some people have said that I looked like the little dutch boy on that can of paint. But at least it doesn't cost me any money! Sometimes if I get them cut by a real stylist, they don't cut them short enough. I don't feel like having them hang in my eyes, so I cut them a little above my browline. That way, I don't feel like a sheep dog!!

I cannot believe you think that was an explanation for cutting bangs!! What was she talking about? I am not a stylist! I work in healthcare and would love to cut my own bangs but have botched it up. This was no help what so ever!!

l totaly agree to cutting your own bangs as the beauty salons are charging way too much now,the men get their hair cuts for ten to fifteen dollars, just for us ladies it costs twenty five for just a trim, plus twenty five or more to get a shampoo,l think the beauticans have out priced themselves and more woman are cutting and coloring their own hair now...

FYI, IF YOU GO TO A STYLIST ON A REGULAR BASIS, IT ONLY COSTS A FEW DOLLARS TO GET YOUR BANGS CUT PROPERLY, THESE STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS WILL LEAVE YOUR BANGS LOOKING AS BAD AS THEY LOOK IN THE PICTURE... LEAVE HAIR CUTTING AND ESPECIALLY COLOR TO THE PROS!!!

Are you nuts? Two sections? An angle? You'll end up looking just as horrible as the woman in the picture. For one thing, the bangs in the "before" picture didn't even need a trim!

For anyone that tries to do what they saw in that video, I will never be out of work... Keep the haircutting to the professionals.. That is what I went to school for!

IMO, the stylist f'ed up her bangs. She didn't look too happy with the result either. I like using a razor comb to trim my own bangs.

how far past your hairline should the bangs go? and if you wants your bangs to be like the girls in the video should you hair be parted in the middle. would it be wrong if your hair is parted to the side? and also how should you cut bangs that go to the side?
