Volume Hair: How to Get Big, Sexy Hair

It's a trend we often only see on the red carpet, but is now making its way to the streets -- big, sexy, voluminous hair. And according to celebrity stylist and Hair Basics expert Ted Gibson, extra-large locks are easy to achieve (not to mention a great juxtaposition to skinny jeans).

You control the volume -- how much you want depends on how sexy you want to be. Tease for lots or tame it back for just a little.

Read on for the how-to on scoring lush locks. Move over, Angelina Jolie.

Hair Basics: Steal the Look - Big, Sexy Hair
Score big, sexy tresses with the help of celebrity stylist and Hair Basics expert Ted Gibson.

Hair Basics: Steal the Look - Big, Sexy Hair

To damp, towel-dried hair, apply a volumizing spray directly to the roots. Massage thoroughly to start the volume.

Hair Basics: Steal the Look - Big, Sexy Hair

Using a large round brush, blow dry the hair in sections, pulling the hair up and over to maximize volume.

Hair Basics: Steal the Look - Big, Sexy Hair

Using a fine tooth comb and working in 2 to 3-inch sections that are 2-inches deep, pull the hair straight up and comb down. Make sure you hold the hair taught and tease the hair close to the root for the most lift.

Tip: To lower the volume, only backcomb a few sections as opposed to the entire head.

Hair Basics: Steal the Look - Big, Sexy Hair

Lightly smooth the hair back using a mixed bristle brush, which is gentler on the hair and won't brush out the backcombing.

Hair Basics: Steal the Look - Big, Sexy Hair

Apply hairspray (aerosol works best) all over the head for hold. Sculpt the sides by spraying the hair directly above the ears and using your hands to smooth the hair up and back.

Va-va-va volume!

Lets stick to the subject at hand please. Just how are you going to brush out all that teased hair? It cant be done. If a stylist does this to you, your only hope is washing your hair and using a lot of conditioner to untangle the mess. Pass.

This look is NOT sexy..... all that fuzzy hairline and the tacky sideburns need to be considered..... bangs.... gel.....use something to get rid of the cro-magnon look around the edges.

It's "hold the hair taut", not taught.

I am not that impressed with this particular style, in that all the hair is forced behind her head, but overall I am glad that hair with volume is coming back! Stringy, thin and flat hair especially long (a look of the 70's, the non-washed look) is not flattering on either gender, of any age. I like full hair and have always opted for that with my shorter hair, and I get compliments for it...

Same as in the 60's. I did it then and Nancy is right; you can't comb or brush it out. It was a mess and I never did the amount of teasing alot of women did. Your hair got very stressed and would break off. It was even worse if you used coloring. I couldn't understand a word of the video.

Can't say why, but the pictures used to illustrate "big hair" don't look right. Maybe it's the skin color or overall makeup of the model, maybe it's the hair color itself, but something doesn't convey a look that's at all attractive.

Been there and did this, and surprise I didn't need a video instruction! My kids grew up trying to get me to NOT do this to my hair....they won, haven't done it in 15 years. It destroys your hair by the way!

The first fallacy is that big hair is sexy. Sometimes, big hair is laughable. Not everyone can wear big hair. And even presuming big hair is done well, not all guys think it's sexy. People are sexy, not their features. This big hair thing keeps coming back, but it's the stylists and product manufacturers who push it.

I'm glad to see this. I'm a huge fan of big hair and the more we see it, the better. I'm not sure I agree it's all that easy to get though. But once you got big hair, some styles are easy to keep looking good because they have an inherent messiness. Here's more on my thoughts:
