Beauty Basics: Prom Makeup

Want all eyes on you at the prom? Follow these makeup tips from Carmindy, makeup artist from TLC's What Not to Wear. She'll show you how to enhance what you've got with pretty, shimmery colors: "It's ok to be sparkly," says Carmindy. "This is a magical night!"

Shimmer Highlighter
Say cheese! An opalescent shimmer catches light to highlight your features on prom night: "It's a good night to go sparkly with your makeup, which catches the light and works well in pictures," explains Carmindy.

Light Up Your Eyes
Sweep an opalescent shimmer highlighter across the entire lid, from the inside to the outside corner, and from the lash line all the way up to the brow bone.

Add Shine to Cheeks and Chest
Use a fan brush to sweep the shimmer powder across cheeks, chest and shoulders--especially great if you're wearing a strapless dress.

Liquid Liner
"Liquid liner can be really tricky, so I prefer using a cream liner and turning into a liquid," says Carmindy. Dip a flat angle brush into a bit of water, and dab it in the cream liner to pick up a little color.

Applying the Liner
Close your eye and start making small dashes across the upper lash line (from the outside to the inside corner) with your brush. Eventually you'll end up with a smooth line.

Sparkly Shadow
Next, take a slightly darker sparkly eye shadow and a small eyeshadow brush.

Define Your Eyes
Use the brush to sweep the powder across creases to add shine and definition. Next, use the shimmer powder to line underneath the lower lash line, staying close to the lashes.

Mascara
"Look up and sweep the wand back and forth over the bottom lashes while holding it vertically. For the top lashes, hold the wand horizontally. Start at the base and wiggle the wand back and forth to coat, then sweep it up to the lash tips," explains Carmindy.

Rose Blush
Use a big, fluffy powder brush to apply a rose colored blush, which works on all skin tones. Smile big, and starting with the apples of the cheeks, gently sweep the brush back towards the hairline.
