I was 'artsy' (rebellious) in high school and really not into prom. I loved the movie "Pretty in Pink" and the scene where Iona counsels Andy about whether or not to go to prom always stuck with me. On her own prom, Iona says, "It was the worst. But it's supposed to be. But you have to go, right?" Then she tells the story of her friend who skipped prom and suffered the life-long 'side effect' of the perpetual feeling that she was forgetting something. In the end I figured, carpe diem. I'd rather go and hate it than not know how it would have been. I think that's a good rule for many experiences in life, actually.
